I'm making a box cake and I realized that I have No Vegetable Oil. Can I use Olive Oil?? Help! I'm waiting for replies!

By Kate on Monday, October 4, 2004 - 06:37 pm:

No, use applesauce.

Yes, it does change the taste ever so slightly, but it will be fine. Add some choc chips to the cake to hide the taste.

My former pastry chef son says olive oil will make a "pungent taste" to your cake - why not use melted margarine?

By Andi on Monday, October 4, 2004 - 06:42 pm:

I would use apple sauce as well.

I should of had more faith in the swiftness of your responses. I didn't want the mix sitting with the water and the eggs in it for too long so I added the olive oil, I tossed in choc. chips too. I hope it turns out. I just wanted the guys to have a nice dessert while I was at school. Thanks!

I know I'm late posting, but we always use applesauce in place of vegetable oil. It's much healthier and doesn't change the taste. :)
