Randy's sick :(

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: Randy's sick :(
By Cat on Sunday, October 3, 2004 - 07:17 pm:

Randy has strep throat. Happens every year (usually twice). His throat started hurting Thursday, but he didn't want to stay home because he had a field trip. Friday was student count day (for funding) so unless students were on their death bed they wanted them there. It was still hurting yesterday so I got him in at my clinic on base (peds doesn't have Saturday hours) and even the doctor said she didn't think it was strep because there weren't any other symptoms--no fever, lymph nodes weren't swollen, he wasn't acting sick, etc. Well surprise, surprise. She called in a rx for penicillian. Well now he's complaining his stomach hurts. He used the bathroom a little while ago and came out all sweaty and clammy. It's got me wondering if it's a reaction to the rx or if he's just getting this stomach bug I had last week. *sigh* So I had to tell the sitter he had Friday night and she said she's on a Z-pack for tonsilitis anyway so she should be safe. I called *N*'s mom because he was here all day yesterday and came at 2pm today and she said she's not worried about *N* getting it (he was already exposed Thursday and yesterday anyway) but she was worried about her dh because he's the one that gets sick easily. Matter of fact he's already got a nasty chest cold and may be calling in sick to work tonight anyway. Poor guy looked like death warmed over when he dropped *N* off this afternoon. I'm sure all the daycare kids have been exposed already. Actually, one little girl had a sore throat about 2 or 3 weeks ago and I suspected strep at the time, but she got better in a couple days. I don't think you can just "get over" strep in a couple days without antibiotics, can you??? Anyway, she's fine now (except for a chronic cough she gets every fall-I think she has allergies, but mom would never have her tested). Oh the joys...

Oh, I'm sorry he's sick. One of my kids had strep throat once and she never complained of a sore throat. I took her in because she had a reddened spot on her cheek that was getting worse.

{{{{Cat & Randy}}}} So sorry to hear that he is sick. My youngest ds gets strep a lot. You can get an upset stomach with it. Once, I took my ds in for what I thought was a stomach virus and he ended up having strep. He seems to get it 2 or 3 times a year.

Hope he is feeling better soon.

Poor Randy, hope he is feeling better real soon.
None of my 3 kids ever had strep. It seems here as soon as the kids get back to school everyone is sick.

Hey Cat, I used to get strep, four times a year. Anyway my best freind had her tonsils(sp) out two year ago, and I haven't got it snice!! She never had strep, the carriers don't get it. Turns out she was a carrier, and snice we were like attached at the hip, she was always making me sick. LOL Maybe snice Randy gets it twice a year like that, you might have a carrier lurking! Just a thought.

It's bad enough your baby is sick, but to have to deal with all the daycare parents is a real big deal. Hope he gets better soon with lots of TLC!

Bummer! Jen just got over strep........again. She's almost 20 and she gets it at least once or twice a year.

As for the tummy stuff, strep has many symptoms, among them can be vomiting and/or diarrhea, and also, the antibiotics can give him diarrhea too.

Also, strep is a bacteria, so NO, you won't get over it without antibiotics.

As Dawn mentioned above, you can have strep and not really be symtomatic either. Jen had it one time when all she was complaining about was an earache. I took her in because I thought she had another ear infection, and it was strep.

I hope he's better soon, and that the rest of you don't get it!!!!

Thanx. Randy's at school today (has to be on meds for a day before going back, started them yesterday). The daycare parents have been okay so far. One said, "Oh, boy." Another said, "It never ends, does it?!?" and another didn't say anything (the mom of the little girl that had a sore throat a few weeks back). I called the school to let them know and the secretary said, "Oh, it's moving up. Last week it was in the 1st and 2nd grades." Randy's in 4th, but like I said, he gets it every time it goes around. Robin's never had it (maybe HE'S the carrier! lol) and I haven't had it since high school. I don't know if dh has ever had it or not. Shoot, his mom can't even remember if he had chicken pox as a child! lol We'll see how he is tonight. He's got karate after school and I've go parent/teacher conferences for him at 7pm. It's the first year I'm actually nervous about Randy's conference. He seems to be acting up a bit this year. He says his teacher doesn't like him. I think he just annoys her! lol Yes, I do hope he's the only one to get it. Guess we'll wait and see... :)
