Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: How would you rate...
By Bellajoe on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 04:49 pm:

the cleanliness of your house..

1. Completely spotless everyday
2. A tad messy, but still pretty clean
3. Not very clean, but not filthy..pretty messy
4. A complete pig stye everyday.
5. Instead of cleaning, i think i'll just move..:)

By Bellajoe on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 04:51 pm:

Since i posted this, i will start.

My home is a...

2. a bit messy( with toys and stuff ou)t but still pretty clean.

By Truestori on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

I must admit I like #5! (LOL)

I would rate my house a tad messy, but still pretty clean. I do clean every day, I just wish it would stay that way for more than a minute at a time! KIDS.....

By Juli4 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

right now a number 3. I have four days off so I intend on upgrading that to a 2.

By Andi on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 05:08 pm:

Mine is a #2.
I would love for it to be a #1 but with 2 cats a Rottweiler a 31/2 year old and a baby I don't see that happening.:)

By Emily7 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

With a toddler I would rate mine a 2, leaning to a 3 because I need to get the carpets done again.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

I'd say between #1 and #2, not *completely* spotless but most everything is in its place so not really messy either.

By Rayanne on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:11 pm:

2. A tad messy, but still pretty clean

By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:13 pm:

I would say between 1 and 2. It is not spotless everyday, but pretty clean almost all of the time. I would not call it messy at all. Clutter and mess drives me insane!! Now, that does NOT include the playroom does it?? LOL

By Mommyathome on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:20 pm:

Between 1 and 2.
Mess and clutter drives me insane too! When everyone gets into bed at night, the house is spotless!

By Monicamomof3 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 07:25 pm:

3~ :( help!!!

By Tink on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 11:31 pm:

I am on my way to having three days off so I admit I'm closer to a three but I'll nearly have a 1 by Sunday. I haven't stayed on top of it at all this week. :(

By Missbookworm on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 11:34 pm:

Mommy at home I'm with you my house is spotless by the time I go to bed..otherwise I stay up and clean it up..I can't stand a mess...normally mine is a 1 or 2...

By Kim on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 12:04 am:

6. HURRICANE hehehehe......

By Feona on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 07:23 am:

I strive for a 2. If I get a two that is very very good. The time and toys really discourage a one.

Anyone ever notice how toys can get dirty. Plus ds needs lots of toys to encourage his play skills. Which are very good now.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 07:36 am:

ROFL Kim!!!!!!! I needed that!

#5 sounds good to me too, this week mine's between a 2 and a 3, and you know what? I don't care! LOL

By Amy~moderator on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 08:06 am:

I would say a #2 normally. However, between 4 and 6pm (when I have 5 kids in the house) I definitely say a #3!

By Kernkate on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 08:14 am:

2. A tad messy, just because there is always some kinds of toys laying around, but still pretty clean

By Hdelfuego on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 08:48 am:

1.5 When Emma goes down for a nap, I confess, I put everything back in its place. Clutter drives me nuts and I can't relax with a dirty house. I'm sure that will change if we have a second child though.

By Fraggle on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 09:03 am:

I'm a 3 right now-too many projects going on around the house (3 bathroom remodels over the past year, new flooring) but now that we are nearing the end I'm hoping we can get back to a 2.

By Angellew on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 09:12 am:

I hate the admit that I sway between 2 and 3!! :(

But, I have a little bit of a defense!! I grew up with a step-mother who kept plastic on furniture, which we still were not allowed to sit on except at Christmas (figure that one out), and was completely neurotic about a clean, spotless house... to the point where everyone was uncomfortable and on the fringe of neurotic themselves!!! So, I want my family to actually LIVE in our home and not worry about every little thing! So, yeah, it could be cleaner, but, I want to be with my family, not watch them while I clean around them! So, there's my defense and I'm sticking to it!!! :)

By Cat on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 09:29 am:

About 2.5. I'm not stressing about it though. I doubt my house would ever be a 1 consistantly. It'd be nice, but hey, we live here!

Kim, I love your sense of humor.

By Eve on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 02:28 pm:

Generally we are #2. #1 when company is coming and #3 when I'm sick.:)

By Cakekisses324 on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 05:09 pm:

Ours is a #1. Thanks to my dh.(believe that) He keeps things immaculate, and has really helped me become more of a pickerupper. I was pretty sloppy before I met him! We clean and pick up daily. We have been in our new house a year now, and it always looks so much nicer clean. It can be hard with 4 kiddos, but we get them in on it too.:)

By Mrse on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 05:19 pm:

3 but that aint my fault!! lol all I do is clean and pick up, pick up and clean. 2 out of 3 of my children are teens, which makes it hard as they go through their rebellion stage. They do thier chores but , it is the part of just don't leave your stuff laying around part that for some reason they just do not get. Oh well, they sure realize how bad the house really is when mom goes on strike. I just put a sign up enter at your own risk! lol. Yes some days I just give up, then I go back into the cleaning frenzy again, I guess you could say my house is clean in spurts, when I get tired and get the all I do is clean feeling , everything goes to pot.

By Fionadeassis on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 12:15 am:

Mine is a #2 bordering on #3.......

If I can get Kiko to nap for more than 30 min. and I have already eaten, then I will do some cleaning.....otherwise I just need to eat or have a cup of tea.

If I get dinner on and the dishes done in a day, I am happy.

My new rule for myself is ....."No cleaning after 9:00 at night."

If the kids are all asleep(and Dh too)...then this is my time for the computer....

Clean house will return in about 2 years...

(I am too tired to make a lot of sense. I should be in bed! LOL!!)

Usually a 2, but right now a 3+ since I've been out of town and all 3 guys have been home alone. I would never aim for a "1." I grew up in an immaculate home and while it is nice for everything to have it's place, it was pretty repressive and my mom was very anal about cleaning. I think it's more important to be a little messy and have fun than immaculate and create an unhealthy stressful environment.

By Unschoolmom on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 07:37 am:

A happy 3. As long as the mess isn't an unhygenic mess, I can deal with it. Strange thing is I do really like cleaning, I just put it farther down on the priority list.

By Dana on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 11:41 am:

I would have to say a 3. I'm not dirty, but my carpets need cleaning, I don't wash my baseboards, a couple of my doorknobs look finger printy, I don't move furniture to clean underneath unless I am rearranging a room, my pantry always loosses that just straightned look within 3 days, the windows have spots, the TV in the bedroom needs dusting (it hangs from the ceiling so I don't climb up there much), the closets are FULL, the garage is totally FULL but in use at all times, the front yard has turned to weeds, I have a pile of filing under my desk just waiting.

On the upside, the bathroom is always clean and I can't stand to see mildew around the tub, the sinks, tubs, toilets get cleaned each day (well until I got pregnant they did), I keep up w/ laundry, I dust the top of furniture, I vacuum most every day, the kitchen is clean each day, at some point during the day all the toy/art stuff is put away.

I wish I did better. I was getting into the swing of things w/ flylady but after I got pregnant, I am doing good to keep those items mentioned above clean. If someone were coming over in 30 minutes, I could have the visiable areas looking great, but don't open a closet!

By Sue3 on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 11:59 am:

Mine is a 3 . *sigh* We are currently gutting out our only bathroom and..........
working on the upstairs.
The kids have not been upstair since Feb.!!.
I should check out the get organized board because I feel like I have had no
organization for some time and now. With soccer ,church classes ,piano lessons and dance and violin lessons , homework *sigh* I have no time !!!

By Lauram on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 12:14 pm:

Usually a 4, but I strive for a 3. Isn't that pathetic. It's a 1 only on the day the cleaning service comes (every other week)- but that only lasts until we walk in the door.

By Mommyathome on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 01:02 pm:

I just want to make a point.
Just because someone keeps their house very clean doesn't mean that it isn't a fun, happy, healthy place to live.
I keep my house very clean. It is not a stressful house, or an unhealthy house. We *live* here. We are comfortable here. We put out feet up on the furniture (with no shoes of course!). The kids play with play dough in the dining room.
But, we keep up on it. When we are done playing, we clean up. Everything goes back in its place.
I'm not embarrased when people stop by unexpectedly. I don't have clean off a spot on the couch for them to sit down. I don't have to make a path through a pool of toys for them to walk.
My kids will always know that they can bring friends over anytime and not be ashamed of how the house looks.
Some people choose to keep their houses clean, and some do not. But, that does not reflect on how happy/healthy/stressful/lived in/etc. the home is.

By Vicki on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 03:43 pm:

Thank you mommyathome!! I hear things like that all the time and it grates on my nerves too!! You can be clean and tidy and have fun too! I don't know why that is so hard for people to understand. I would be willing to bet that even though my house is usually clean, I spend less time cleaning it than others do. The trick is just keeping up with it!!

By Bellajoe on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 04:27 pm:

Ditto what Robin and Vicki said! Just because people like a clean house, doesn't mean they are stuffy, no fun people.

By Insaneusmcwife on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 06:20 pm:

Currently we are in a 3:(. I Have 3 extra boys staying with me for the next few weeks and they are MESSY.

By Unschoolmom on Sunday, October 3, 2004 - 10:30 am:

I agree Mommyathome. My house has at times been a 1 or 2 and nothing was sacrificed to keep it that way. It didn't take hours away from my kids to keep it sparkling.
I'm happy in our current 3 (occasionally 4) because it WOULD take too much time to keep it straightened in part because of my kids ages and in part because of the size of our tiny house. But we should have a liveble basement (85% of the mess consists of toys and when the basement is done it will be all for the kids to keep in whatever state they want) soon and my two year old is catching on that the bookshelves don't need to be emptied everyday.
Clean or messy, neither is a virtue or sin to me, just a matter of what you can do with the situation you're in at the moment. Clean doesn't have to be a permanent expectation, messy doesn't have to be a source of shame. Neither really say too much about a family at any given time.
