How often do you...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive October 2004: How often do you...
By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:22 am:

REALLY deep clean? Like scrub the walls, wood work and the whole 9 yards??? I am a fall cleaner and like to get it all done before being shut in all winter. I scrubbed the family room walls down this morning and was amazed at how bad they were. Espically behind the tv area.... so I am thinking maybe I don't do that often enough, so I thought I would get your opinions. Well, better go get my curtains in the dryer!!

By Janet on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:43 am:

Umm... well.... hmmm... erm....

By Kernkate on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:51 am:

I do mine I would say every 2 months...I just did my fall cleaning and now before Christmas I will do it again.
Hate it, but the house just smells so nice after its all done:)

By Kate on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:51 am:

Scrub the walls??? Wash the curtains???? Um, never. It wrecks the paint!!!! Doesn't it??? And curtains that I painstakingly iron and painstakingly hang up...I should WASH THEM?? And iron and hang up all over again??? I have occasionally VACUUMED them, but I don't wash them. When I spot clean marks on the walls it leaves wash marks and then I have a whole slew of slightly different colored circles everywhere. We don't smoke or have pets so am I excused? :)

Basically, with no smoke, no pets, and our 'no shoes in the house' rule, things don't get all that dirty. I clean any spills or messes right away and I keep on top of vacuuming, dusting, and swiffing. Well, mostly anyway. :) When the cobwebs on the ceiling or in the corners become noticeable, I zap them with a feather duster and if the dust on the baseboards looks thick I'll vacuum them but it truly has to be noticeable. I guess I'm a bit more like Flylady in that I just avoid deep cleaning and clean regularly, but it's really just light cleaning and keeping on top of things.

By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:52 am:

You scrub down walls and the whole 9 yards every 2 months!!! Yikes, no wonder my house is so dirty!! I am not doing it near often enough...anyone else???

By Kate on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 09:53 am:

Every two months???? I'm getting a complex now!!! I don't THINK my house is dirty....but now I'm paranoid and am going to inspect it!!! Which will no doubt be a mistake because I probably won't like what I find. I need to stop reading this thread. :)

By Kaye on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:01 am:

Honestly I do it about once a year...but never the whole house at a time! Maybe twice a year in big areas like the kitchen, formal etc...LOL. My name is Kim and I am a "messy"!

By Amy~moderator on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:08 am:

ROFL, I need to stop reading this thread too! Let's see...with 4 males in the house - a 1 year old, 2 year old, 5 year old, and a 30 year old (who may as well be a teenager ;) ) I have to clean often! I do not have curtains, so that's not a problem. I clean the blinds every 6 months, unless they are noticeable dirty. I do dust them regularly. I spot clean my walls about every 2 weeks. I rarely, rarely scrub every inch of every wall - I have A LOT of walls in this 4 bedroom house! And not much time, believe me! I clean baseboards in the high-traffic rooms about every 3-4 months. I sweep and mop the kitchen, living room, halls, and hall bathroom every day. I do the bedrooms and other bathroom floors every week or two.

By Mommyathome on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:20 am:

Ours gets done every 2 months. The blinds get done every 4 months.

Regular stuff like vacuuming and dusting is done daily. Sometimes every other day depending on my mood :) LOL

By Debbie on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:29 am:

I do a deep clean twice a year in fall and spring. However, I do not scrub walls or wash my curtains. When I deep clean I just clean the baseboards, wood blinds, move furntiure to clean behind it, and wash the windows. Like Kate, we don't smoke, we have no pets and we don't wear shoes in the house. I feel my house stays pretty clean just from my regular cleaning routine.

By Kernkate on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:29 am:

LOL Kate:) The reason I got into doing the curtains and woodwork and such every 2 months because of my son with his asthma and allergies.
Curtains and baseboards hold alot of dust and DS is highly allergic to it. On the advice of my pediatrician 8 years ago I started doing this and believe me I hate it. Believe me with 3 kids and DH I am no way a clean freak. The walls I slack on ALOT...actually I am going to do some painting next week so my walls will be good to go for awaile!!

By Lorebunde on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:30 am:

I don't have a certain time of year, just when I happen to notice, gee thats dirty looking, then I take care of it. This is in regards to the "extra" stuff, not the everyday/weekly stuff.
I should change the curtains, I do a little everyday, its easier for me than to just wait until Saturday.

By Mommyathome on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:41 am:

Yay! I'm happy to see there are other "no shoes in the house" families. My new neighbors have been rolling their eyes at me because we are a "no shoes in the house" family. I knew I wasn't alone :)

By Vladasha on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 10:59 am:

Let them roll their eyes at you! You'll also have the nicest floors/carpets in the neighborhood. I'm adopting this policy, even though our floors are currently trashed...there will EVENTUALLY be a remodel done!! I wash my walls EVERYDAY...ok...maybe not the WHOLE wall, but it's spot cleaning where the 2 year old has found a crayon or a pencil. My older two NEVER wrote on anything inappropriate and my last two think the world is their pallette!!! Luckily the 4 yr old seems done. The only time the WHOLE wall gets a cleaning is before I paint!!

As far as deep cleaning, I'd say every fall and spring...

By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 11:16 am:

Who invented decorations??? LOL I have scrubbed walls, washed blinds, washed windows and washed and re-hung curtains already today. I just got done washing all the little decorations that go in the room and although the room is nicely decorated, that took me almost as long as cleaning the room!!!! Now to get the sweeper out and do the furniture......

By Fionadeassis on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 11:17 am:

Ugh! My house is looking like such a dump ever since Kiko was born.

I am going to admit something...I may end up regretting it but.....here goes......

I haven't vacuumed my rugs in almost 2 months!!!

I used to vacuum once a week. The carpets are very thick and hard to vacuum in this new house. There are so many levels to lug the vacuum up. I know I should just get a carpet sweeper to at least keep up a bit.......

If I can manage to make dinner and do the dishes in a day-I consider myself on top of things!!

Me and Dh actually talked a bit last night about getting some help about once a month just to get the big cleaning done.

Daily cleaning includes vacuum, dust, load laundry load dishes.

Deep cleaning, I usually do it twice a year, in The Fall---put away summer clothes, get out autumn clothes, go through everything and give some to charity before the holidays so I am not swimming in Christmas toys......

The Spring---same thing, put away fall clothes, get out summer clothes, go through everything and give some of it to charity.

This is usually the time that I rearrange furniture, buy new "whatever" that I've been needing, etc.

We do a really good cleaning every couple of months. I HATE vaccumming so that's the thing I do the least... As for dusting I do once a week. I don't scrub the walls, just spot clean when/if needed. Baseboards? About once a month, never washed my curtains but then I've only had them a few months...

By Feona on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 01:41 pm:

Deep clean? When we move....

By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 02:18 pm:

Well, the family room is spotless and dust free!! It smells so good in there. Tomorrow is the kitchen!! I have come to the conclusion that I need to do this more often. It was pretty bad and I am a clean person. LOL

By Dawnk777 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 02:45 pm:

I can't remember the last time I scrubbed walls. Actually, our last dog always rubbed against the wall when she went downstairs to the basement, so that would eventually start looking black. After we had her put to sleep, neither dh or I wanted to wash it off. It was just kind of a comforting reminder of our dog. So, eventually, I got sick of it and did scrub it off.

Jasmine doesn't come down the stairs the same way, so that doesn't happen anymore. She just loses fur and makes us sweep the steps! LOL!

By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 03:01 pm:

I was amazed how bad the wall behind the tv was. I am sure it has something to do with what ever attracks all the dust to the screen, but that was was so bad!! I am not the kind of person that can do one wall though. LOL If I do that section more often, that means the whole woom will get done more than I am doing it now!!

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 03:40 pm:

ROFL Feona! I do it once or twice a year. I'm going to start working on it this weekend since we are having house guests for Christmas, and we will be gone for 2 weeks at Thanksgiving.

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 03:46 pm:

On as as needed basis... which isn't very much with 3 people. I've never scrubbed the walls top to bottom, I dont see the point.

By Bellajoe on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 04:46 pm:

Hey Vicki! You can come do my house next, it sounds like your on a roll! LOL!

Deep cleaning? Um, when we are having people come over for Christmas or any party.

I vacuum about every other day in the main area of the house. I do the bedrooms about once every other week...vacuum is heavy to carry up the stairs. yup, that's my excuse :)

Sweep the kitchen probably 2 or 3 times a day...we have 2 messy messy eaters and wipe down the counters several times a day. Everything else is as needed basis.
bathrooms are spot cleaned almost everyday and really cleaned once or twice a week...not includeing the showers which i hate to do. those are maybe once a week.

By Vicki on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:27 pm:

I am amazed at the number of people that don't wash down walls. I do it in most rooms twice a year and my water is always a little dirty! Maybe I just have a dirty house or something. LOL

By Missbookworm on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 11:29 pm:

ok here goes lol..I vacuum every day (the whole house every few days) or every two days depending...I sweep a few times a day wash the kitchen floor a few times a week. I clean the bathroom regularily and give it a deep clean once or twice a week. I'd have to say I give the walls a good scrub once a month lol..and spot wash in in between. I organize the basement about once a month if it needs it..I do at least one load of laundry every day was the bedding usually once a week...ummmmmmm I clean out the fridge and cupboards (meaning wipe it all down every couple of weeks) *shrugs* I think that about covers it lol...I'm not sure..but I spend alot of time cleaning lol my friends who are moms too always ask me why my house is so clean with 3 kids :)

By Cat on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 09:32 am:

Well, we move every two to three years, so...

By Kate on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 09:54 am:

I don't understand this wall scrubbing...do you use exterior paint inside?? Otherwise, HOW do your walls SURVIVE these wet cleanings over and over again? If I were to clean a wall, I would SWEEP it, or SWIFF it, NOT use water on it, unless I were actually spot cleaning a dirt/food mark. Yes, I admit they get DUSTY, hence the reason I would use a broom or swiffer cloth. But to purposely wet down a surface that never gets walked on and that dirt doesn't really collect on as much as a floor or other horizontal surface? I don't get it. Of course, I prefer dry cleaning ANYway, as when I dust I only use a dry Swiffer cloth for that, too, NEVER do I use sprays or polishes. The only things I clean with water and soap are the bathrooms and kitchen counters/sink/appliances. I'm seriously confused over the wall WASHING!!

By Eve on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 02:26 pm:

I don't deep clean my walls at all. I wipe down baseboards and trim and doors. I do wipe off fingerprints from DD if I notice them. I dust the walls, but that's it. I've never thought about it honestly.

What are you using the clean the walls?

By Vicki on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 02:45 pm:

LOL..no, I don't use exterior paint inside. But if you look at different paint cans, some are designed for scrubbing and other paint won't hold up as well to it. I used Spic and Span and almost hot water and you don't soak the walls. I used a rag and squeezed out most of the water and then wash them down. You should just try it on one wall and see what you get off that wall!! Nasty!! LOL

By Vicki on Friday, October 1, 2004 - 02:45 pm:

Try the wall behind your tv!! That was the worst one that I did this time.

By Feonad on Saturday, October 2, 2004 - 07:07 am:

Do you have oil heat? I remember that leaves some residue...

I am wondering if the oil heat is malfunctioning....

I had to clean the hall way walls upstair on and near the stairs. Little hands marks, scuff marks ... Scrubbing even benjamin moore removes the paint. The magic eraser does good on marks there.

By Imamommyx4 on Sunday, October 3, 2004 - 11:45 pm:

Deep clean.... Ummm, let's see. We've been in the house almost 15 years and it's been done maybe twice. Once right before I had my last child about 4 1/2 years ago. and once about a year ago but that was only because I caught the house on fire and smoked up stuff.

But in my defense, we don't smoke and the boys haven't written on the walls in year and dd hasn't started. Sweeping, mopping, vaccuuming done AT LEAST twice a week. And we pick up daily. I have better things to do like play with the dd. It's not immaculate, but it's not any where near a pig sty and I'm not embarrassed by the pracher stopping by.

By Lauram on Monday, October 4, 2004 - 08:23 am:

Ummm....when I paint!

By Rayanne on Monday, October 4, 2004 - 08:31 am:

Probably about 3 to 4 times a year.
