Could I be pregnant?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2004: Could I be pregnant?
By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 11:47 am:

I know this sounds like such a dumb question (especially when you already have 3 children!), but I am just wondering about everyone's experience with home preg. tests. I am having preg. symptoms and took a home preg. test about 4 days ago and it was negative. Someone told me to go get a name brand one b/c they pick up the hormone quicker than the off brand ones. I have always taken the Equate ones. What has been your experience with name brand -vs- off brand. Do name brand preg. tests really pick up the hormone quicker. I actually have a friend who took an off brand that was - and a day later took a name brand and it was +. Any of you have similar stories? I just don't want to fork out all that money unless it is really worth it to find out this early! Thanks!!

Ive always used both.. Ive even used the ones from the dollar store, which showed a positive.. I didnt believe, thinking it was cheap and not reliable.. I went to Kmart and bought First Response(Ive always had good luck with them)and sure enough it was positive.

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 11:59 am:

how early did you take the First Response test?

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:00 pm:

I don'y think theres much of a difference. I'd just get a test that advertises that it can read your hormones levels as early as 5 days before a missed period, no matter what brand. They are usually more sensitive and read better with more accurate results.

I found out I was preg. with DD using a Confirm test, not a name brand.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:03 pm:

I've always used off brands too. They've all worked just fine for me :)

Next time I take one (not sure when that will be LOL) I want to try that digital one. I think it looks really neat! But, I'm sure it's pricey. Maybe I'll take a cheap-o one first just to confirm I'm pregnant and then buy the digital one just to show DH with :)

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:05 pm:

LOL ! At first I thought: WOW!! I am glad I got so much help! Ha!

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

I kind of wanted to take a test early if it is worth the $. But if it isn't anymore sensitive to the preg. hormone that the off brands, then I will just wait another week and take a cheap one.

By Jackie on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:08 pm:

Ive never remembered exactly when I took First Response, Ive used it with my last 2 pregnancies.. My last pregnancy I had a dnc on Nov7th, and never got my cycle back.. I think I tested around 35 days later and it was positive..Normally I would test around day 28 or day 29..but it all depends on when you ovulate and when inplantation takes place in order to determine when your positive would show up..If your dates are a little off, you may get a negative on one day, and a few days later it may be a positive.

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:11 pm:

Ok, that helps. I wasn't sure if you could have such differing results in a matter of days. I haven't had a period since Olivia was born (9 mths ago), but could have ovulated without knowing it! That's why I am wondering if an early preg. test will determine quicker. I am obviously not good with curiosity! LOL

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:15 pm:

With my first one, I took the test on the day or so after my period was due and didn't come. I had just had a blood test at the clinic that came back inconclusive. We did a home test and it was positive. I think it might have been a First Response, but it's hard to remember now.

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

But, does the First Response test really give you a correct result earlier than the other ones? Most of them are pretty reliable once your period is due, but can First Response really give you a correct positive earlier than the others?

I am going to FREAK OUT if I am pregnant! :(

By Emily7 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:32 pm:

The pg test I took with my dd was bought at a dollar store. I walked past it & thought, I have been having symptoms, its only a $1.
It was positive with in 45 seconds!

By Cakekisses324 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 12:59 pm:

I GOT MY TEST AT THE DOLLARSTORE TOO, AND IT WAS ACCURATE. GOOD LUCK!

By Tonya on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 01:11 pm:

$$$ store here for both my kids and both were + pretty early on. I was not even 6 weeks with Jade when I got my ++.

Good luck and remember god will only give you what you can handle.

If I am pregnant, I am probably going on 4 weeks. Have any of you gotten results that early from the tests at the $ store?

By Emily7 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 02:33 pm:

I was a little over 4 weeks.
You could always go to a woman clinic to find out.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 02:39 pm:

I have received positive results at 4 weeks pregnant. That was with my first DD.

By Melissa on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 03:20 pm:

There needs to be enough hormone HCG in your Urine for the test to pick it up. This hormone doubles every 48 hours. a early preg tests picks up a lower level of HCG If you've had a positive result I would believe it. If you do another test do it with your first a.m. urine which is more concentrated.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 04:52 pm:

Man , i never even thought of getting a prego test at the $ store! I used EPT and i think First Response and they were both correctly positive.

Good Luck!

By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 05:38 pm:

Did any of you find out a little earlier than 4 wks along with a generic brand test?

By Amecmom on Wednesday, September 29, 2004 - 07:24 pm:

One thing you can do to increase your chances of getting an accurate response is to cut your water intake a few hours before you go to bed, and then test your first urine in the am. The concentration of hormones, if they are there, will be higher.

Thanks everyone! I think I will go to the dollar store on Fri. I let you know .

By Bobbie~moderatr on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 06:51 am:

I have had a negative test and been pregnant. I do not remember how early I tested but I do remember that my second test was a week after the neg. This was almost 16 years ago so the memory of when is a little foggy. But it does depend on your HGC level. The farther along the higher the level the quicker the results. Best of luck and I am with Tonya on this God will only give you what he thinks you can handle.

By Monicamomof3 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 08:53 am:

Tonya and Bobbie-
Thank you for your encouragement. I think even if I am not pregnant that it is still a lesson to rest in the fact that nothing takes God by suprise! Thanks for the reminder!

By Palmbchprincess on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 12:27 pm:

Certain brands are more sensitive than others. It doesn't go by off brand or name brand. Do a google search, you may be able to find out which are the most sensitive. Good luck... let us know!!

By Monicamomof3 on Thursday, September 30, 2004 - 02:12 pm:

I got a test at the $ store and took it today. It is negative. So- I probably am not. I must have a little stomach bug or something.
