Temporary Wall... is there such a thing??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2004: Temporary Wall... is there such a thing??
By Livvy on Friday, September 17, 2004 - 08:02 am:

I am wondering if anyone knows if there is such a thing as a temporary wall for a room? I want to enclose my loft upstairs for about a year and don't want to put up any kind of permanent wall. I would need one very long "wall" and another about half the first's size. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing?? Thanks!

I have seen it done on trading spaces and shows like that, so yes, I have heard of it if that counts. LOL I have never personally done it, but their results have been great!!

Do you think you could use screens? The kind you just fold up? You could also put up one stud, and hook up some closet doors on either side of the stud. You could most likely get them at a second hand place to keep the cost down. hope that helps

You could have a professional install temporary partitions or you could use room dividers. It all depends on why you need them and how much you are willing to spend.

How about putting up some bookcases, adding plywood in between them, and painting it all the same color?

We have a loft upstairs and I want to turn it into my DD's bedroom until we can add on a new room upstairs for her (master bedroom upstairs and other 2 bedrooms downstairs just isn't safe enough for me!!) Her bedroom has been downstairs and we moved our bed into the other room across the hall so that we could be near her. Now we want to move back upstairs and I insist that she come with us so that we're all on the same floor!

I really like the idea of book cases as part of the wall because they are so functional!!

With some of your suggestions, I have been able to come up with some new words to type into the search engine to find more items. I am now typing in "moveable walls" and "freestanding room divider" and coming up with some pictures to look at! Pricey but fun to investigate!!

If you like the idea of bookcases, then I suggest you look at Ikea. If you don't have an Ikea anywhere near you, they are on line and you can order on line. Their bookcases, etc., come broken down and you have to assemble them but they are very easily assembled. They also have wardrobes and free-standing closets, including drawer assemblies, also unpainted, so you could do a whole wall of shelves, closet, dresser, etc. as your dividing wall, and these items would be useful later on in the bedroom you build and/or other places. If you get the unfinished you can paint and repaint. I have several Ikea items and find them very well built and good quality for the price - and the prices are not bad.

They also have storage area stuff at lower prices, which is woodframed shelf units, etc., and you can cover the backs of the units with plywood. I will check my Ikea catalog tonight and give you website links to what I am thinking of.

Thanks so much Ginny!!! I never thought of Ikea. There isn't one anywhere near me but I would defintely order online.

I really like the idea of a using Ikea products to create an entire wall. I think my DD would like it too!!!

I have no creativity whatsoever but I knew if I posted my question here I would find a bunch of great ideas from some creative women!! :)

Go to Ikea.com or call 800-434-4532 and you should be able to order a catalog.

In looking through my catalog, I am particularly thinking of the PAX line of storage which has wardrobes of all kinds in 79-1/8" and 92-7/8" heights. Prices range from $150/$170 (depending on height) for the Bax/Brevik wardrobe, which is 39-1/8" wide by 23-5/8 deep, two doors, in white or wood-looking melanine. The Ombo wardrobe (31-1/2 wide x 23 5/8 deep by 71 5/8 high) is a birch finish, one clothes rail, fixed shelf, at $69.00.

The GORM storage units are open, wood frames and shelves, with lots of accessories to use. A shelving unit, frame and three shelves and brace, 30-1/2 x 20-1/8 x 68-1/2, open on all four sides, is $29.99. A corner storage unit of 51-1/8" x 51-1/8 (corner unit) by 12-1/4 deep, 43-1/4 high, is $139. You would want to back these units with plywood to keep things (or people) from falling through.

You really have to have the catalog.
