Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2004: Info on Vasectomy's

As I posted before my husband is getting his done next month..Anybodys husbands have it done? What is the recovery period, are they in pain long? I read the procedure itself is only like 15 minutes.. Can they drive home themselves or do they need somebody to drive them home?
Any info would be apreciated..

Most of the time it is a quickly painless procedure. My hubby did NOT have a good time with it. He did drive himself home, but he was uncomfortable for about a week. They say a weekend in bed and you are good to go. He did go to work on monday (having it done on friday), but really wanted to stay home. He mostly felt that way all week. He also commented about "things" feeling different for about 4-5 months. But it has almost been a year and he has no complaints now. So my advice is if he complains just keep reminding him it WILL get better!

There was a thread just recently about that, as well as others in the past, here are some links Jackie:

I had to drive dh home both times. He was pretty uncomfortable, so I don't think it would have gone well for him to do it himself. The first time dh was pretty much recovered by Monday, but the second time took more like 1.5-2 weeks before he felt normal again.

My dh had it done. I had to wait in the van with the kids while he had it done and I drove him home since he was a bit uncomfortable. He kept it iced for 3 days and he didn't having any problems with it other than the normal bruising and swelling and slight discomfort. He had it done on a Friday and went back to work on Monday.

Mine had his (after our 4th) about 10 years ago. I dropped him off and went shopping with the baby. He put together a swing set the next day!! He did have his done on a Friday - back to work on Monday.

DUH! I didn't bother to comment, just gave you links!

My X had it done - he was in pain and kept himself iced for 3 days or so. He actually insisted on *trying it out*, less than a week after he had his done, because he was so afraid *it wouldn't work*. He was fine, he was mostly just a jerk to the rest of us! :-)

He also had it done on a Friday and returned to work on a Monday. He refused to let me or anyone else go with him and drove himself to and from the appointment.

My DH had his on a Thursday (probably the only one scheduled that day--LOL) since he had to be one his feet at church ALL DAY Sunday. He was pretty uncomfortable after and iced himself for 3-4 days. It was a good week before he could be on his feet long periods of time without getting achey. I drove him there and back and laughed at him because he walked funny on the way out...very *gingerly.* Just keep a couple of bags of frozen peas on hand because they mold pretty well---you can just swap them out.
