TMI "Woman" question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive September 2004: TMI "Woman" question
By Boxzgrl on Monday, September 6, 2004 - 12:22 pm:

I think I have BV. I went to my annual gyn appt last month and the dr. thought so too so we did tests but they all came back clear. The dr. left a message so I didnt talk to her but she never prescribed anything for the symptoms or anything. I know I need an rx of flagyl or clindamycin or something in that area but I cant make it to the gyn all this week because DH has a busy week and they wont let him off to watch DD and last time I attempted an appt with her it didnt go well.

Is there anything OTC that may work? I know I need to get to the dr. but I need something in the meantime. Should I just consider going to the Naval Hosp. ER after DH gets off work so I get an rx asap or is that not severe enough to go? I just dont know what to do and the symptoms are getting more bothersome with each passing day. (This is Day 3)

TIA

To my knowledge there is nothing OTC that will help BV. If you've had it before and you have symptoms maybe your gyn will just call something in especially since he/she just saw you and suspected you had it even though the test didn't show it. That is worth a try. BV isn't an emergency really, gross and annoying, yes. It can soemtimes turn to PID but that takes a long time and if you have no pelvic pain and you just had a test that was neg for it i wouldn't worry about that.

Thanks for the advice Melissa. I called DH to see if one of his navy doc friends could just give me a few pills. Illegal but the reality is they do it... all the time. I'm still gonna get to the doctor but its scary possibly having BV while TTC. I dont want to risk anything.

I had to take Flagyl for trichmaniasis, it was HORRIBLE!!! I threw up constantly from the pills, it is one of the nastiest medications I've ever taken. I'm sorry you are having symptoms of BV, I've never had it, but I'm sure it's no fun!! Hope you feel better!

Since the "B" in BV stands for bacterial, you will definitely need an antibiotic to get rid of it. I sure wouldn't TTC until you are all cleared up. I'd call the MD to see if he/she will just call in a prescription. Do you have someone who occasionallt babysits or a neighbor who could watch your DD long enough for you to run to the doctor?

Ask the pharmacist. I think there is something you can take maybe I am wrong... Monistat?

I'd like to know how you are doing and the conclusion to your problem getting to the doctor. I'm a pharmacist and have some suggestions but not worth the time if you've already gotten the medicine and doing better. Don't TTC until you are cleared up though. There is the possibility that the dr may not have gotten a good sample when he/she did your exam. But if it is really BV you do need one of the 2 meds you noted. If that doesn't help, I have more suggestions for you.

One more comment that most doctors forget to tell their patients. Be sure to wash your panties in hot water and clorox and dry them in the dryer even the ones you might not think you've worn. I found this out through experience and on-line searching. I had a few pair that were colored or fancy and didn't wash them in the clorox. And it seemed to always flair back up right after I wore them. I washed them in clorox, they didn't fade, and finally no more problems. Just use a minimal amount of clorox in the washing machine.
