Speaking of hurricanes....insurance ???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: Speaking of hurricanes....insurance ???

We have had our home insurance policy through the same company/same agent for the past 12 years.

Our dwelling, personal property, etc has pretty much stayed the same. But our hurricane premium for the past three years has gone from $300. to $900.!!!! to today $1100. Making our house insurance almost $1700. a year!

Tell me this is crazy. We called our insurance company on the first raise, they said everybody was raising rates for hurricane premiums in FL.

We are calling around on Monday. Arghhhh, I hate this crap! We have just been getting estimates for a pool, now I have to figure all this new financing into our budget. We have to deal with chasing around for a new insurance company or vie for a better deal with our existing one.

Anyway, with what we have been paying for Hurricane insurance, we were hoping Bonnie turned into one from her tropical storm status. Then we wanted it to go right over our house!!!

BRING on CHARLEY! LOL

What about flood insurance? We have to have flood insurance in addition to homeowner's insurance, because flooding from a hurricane or any other exterior reason is not covered under homeowner's. But, if, during a hurricane, a tree falls through your roof, or your roof gets blown off, THAT is covered.

Actually, where my house is, one block off the Mississippi River, we are 11 feet above sea level, and our zone does not require flood insurance. But living in S. Louisiana and in a hurricane risk area, it would be plain stupid NOT to have flood insurance. My flood insurance runs about $300 a year. I'm not even certain how much my homeowner's insurance is since it's figured into my mortgage. I think it's around $1100 or $1300 a year.

Good luck. Here in CA it's earthquake insurance that is outrageous. It's too high to even consider. I hope you are able to find a better deal! :)

Be careful what you wish. Isabel did quite a job on our area. The insurance companies are still paying for new roofs, houses, fences etc. and some people still have no homes. They are predicting more and more huge storms will hit the Eastern Seaboard. I'm just thankful we had a reliable insurance company and don't mind paying the increases. It's better than not being insured.

Bea, I said the last part of my post in jest, of course! LOL

I am concerned of the blatant increase in our hurricane premium, as stated in my prior post. As you are well aware, this increase will make our monthly mortgage payments higher. We refinanced our mortgage about six months ago, but it seems the payments keep increasing for different reasons.
