View your house via satellite

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: View your house via satellite
By Bubbels~admin on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 01:52 pm:

This is just too cool. Go to: http://www.globeexplorer.com

There are satellite photos of the entire world. Just enter an address and you can view a photo of that location, even zoom in fairly close. Unbelievable. The privacy implications here are a little worrisome though ...

By Kellyj on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:09 pm:

That's both cool and creepy at the same time.

By Sue3 on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:10 pm:

Mine registered as an invalid state..I bet it`s cool.
I am going to go back and check out some other things! Thanks for sharing

By Kate on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:23 pm:

Very cool, but SLOW. Is it my computer or did anyone else experience that? How close can you get? I got too frustrated with the crawling pace. I saw my house and yard, but fuzzy...

By Tonya on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:47 pm:

I saw mine but it was dated 4/20/02 over 2 years ago. So the grass is dead and there is no garage and the cement is missing from when we did it.

By Cat on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:55 pm:

Mine's dated April 1st, 2002. That's about a month before we moved in, so there's no grass, fence, nothing. They hadn't even built the house next door yet and most of our neighbors didn't have grass yet either. I can see my neighbor across the street's car in their driveway! lol I agree it's cool, but creepy.

By Mommyathome on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:56 pm:

Mine is an invalid state as well :( I would have liked to look at that! But, I guess that means that the whole world can't view my house via satellite which is a good thing!

By Mommyathome on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 02:59 pm:

:( I tried looking up my siblings addresses in california and nevada. They are both invalid too.
I have a friend back east....maybe I'll try hers! I really want to see how this thing works LOL

By Trina~moderator on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 03:12 pm:

Nov. 2000 - I can only see the houses at the bottom of our hill, but not mine.

By Eve on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 03:20 pm:

This is wild! I couldn't tell if it was my street or not, so I looked up Trina's. LOL! (Sorry, Trina, it just popped into my head!) Trina, you have to hit the "North" and then "East" to go up your hill and to your house. You can see it.:)

Although, I still can't find my house. LOL!

By Trina~moderator on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 05:02 pm:

LOL, Eve! I tried to hit "North" and the pic was awful. I couldn't make anything out so I gave up. Have to try again!

By Jelygu on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 05:50 pm:

wow... I really can see my house...
too creepy for me!

By John on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Type the 2 letter state abbreviation instead of the full state name..otherwise you get the "invalid state".

By Annie2 on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 07:50 pm:

That is interesting. Can I make the "global" logo go away?

By Tink on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 09:43 pm:

Annie2, I think the global logo is a safety feature to keep people from just printing the screen. Instead, they want you to purchase the pictures from them.

By Annie2 on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 09:54 pm:

Cori, thanks. Nothing for free. I should have known! :)

By Melanie on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 10:19 pm:

Very cool! I had to scan around a bit to find mine as well, but there it was! It was from June 2000, so just a few months after we moved in. Thanks for the link! :)

By Mommyathome on Monday, August 9, 2004 - 11:19 pm:

Thanks John! I'm going to try mine again :)

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 12:47 am:

Terraserver also shows you satellite pics, but without the GlobeExplorer across the picture. The picture of my neighborhood is from when Emily was a baby! LOL! I'm going to go search for where Whistling Straits is now, since Whistling Straits was only built in 1998 and before that the rest of us used to have an awesome view of Lake Michigan that is now gone!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 12:57 am:

I searched for my childhood home on the Terraserver. LOL! They put the red thumbtack by the wrong house. I know my house was the 5th one in from the corner and they put the thumbtack on the 7th house! Oh well. Definitely my 3yo to 13yo neighborhood, though!

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 08:57 am:

cool..

By Renee on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 09:28 am:

that is cool. I typed in my addy and the pic is date June 1, 2002 so it just shows the land before our house was built.

By Nanaoie on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 10:36 am:

Wow,,,,,,,,,,,,talk about big brother watching you.............

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 11:18 am:

It worked!! (with the abbreviation)
Very blurry, but we did pick out where out old house was at. The house we are in now wasn't built yet. But, we did see the land it now sits on. Both of those were dated 1993.
I'm going to check out the one Dawn listed.

By Mommyathome on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 11:22 am:

Very cool! I was able to see our old house much clearer on the Terraserve. On the other one, the 'X' was right over the top of it LOL

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 10, 2004 - 11:38 pm:

I found my childhood house, my high school house, my current house and the land where my parents current house is. (for my parents, the pic was taken before any of the houses around them were built!)

For my high school house, at first I thought it was a different house, but the street didn't look right. I had to zoom out until I could find my high school, then follow the roads, so I could make sure which road was the one I was looking for. Then I found it! I had been looking at the house across the street from the one I was supposed to be looking at.

By Lauram on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - 08:43 am:

I can't really figure it out- there are too many trees! I think that was my road.... I looked up my childhood home too- couldn't figure those out either. They are dated Nov 1 2000.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 - 10:49 am:

I found my house - it appears to be after we cut the big trees down and before we had the Morgan building built - that was a small window of time between those 2 things!
