Food Lion or Martin's $3.89.

By Marg on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 04:48 pm:

sorry double post, computer really slow:(

By Mommyathome on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 05:48 pm:

$2.89 for the cheap brand at Wal-Mart. That's for 2%.

By Colette on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 05:53 pm:

about $3 and up for the brands without hormones.

By Annie2 on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 06:16 pm:

Around $3.89 at Wal-mart, for skim.

By Mommierenee on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 06:18 pm:

$2.99 here. You can get it on sale sometimes for 1.99.

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 06:59 pm:

OMGosh! Why is our milk so expensive here?! We pay over $4 a gallon, sometimes close to $5! Occasionally it will be on special for $2.75 - $3 but not often.

By Eve on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 08:00 pm:

Ditto Trina. We shop at the same store. Around $4.79. I love when they have a sale, 2 for $5.:)

I'm telling you, whenever my Mom comes to our grocery store, she has heart failure and tells me to bring an ice chest the next time I am in NH. Our meat is expensive too. I usually pay over $7/lb for boneless chicken.

Speaking of milk....Can you freeze it? When I was little we used to always buy the gallons ahead of time and freeze them. I'm just wondering if it takes any of the Vitamins out of it or not? Does anyone know?

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 08:10 pm:

BTW Eve, just looked through our grocery store flier - Hood milk on special $3 a gallon.

Never heard of freezing milk. Has anyone tried it? When I was a kid my mom used to buy Carnation instant milk to save money. YUCK! text description

By Boxzgrl on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 08:32 pm:

Its about $1.89 for Whole Milk at the commissary and $3.99 at Vons.

My SIL has 2 kids under age 2 and freezes her milk. She buys 8-10 gallons at a time and just puts a frozen one in the sink at night to thaw and puts it in the fridge in the am. Its still got a pretty big chunk of ice in the am so it keeps cool and she doesnt have to worry about it going bad or anything. I wouldnt think freezing it would be bad since most items you freeze actually preserve the vitamins and nutrients.

By Tink on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 09:39 pm:

Milk is $3.99 a gallon for skim here. Crystal (Palmbchprincess) and I joke that "white gold" is going to be the next hot item on the black market. :)

By Cybermommyx4 on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 10:23 pm:

$3.60 for the "store brand" and up to $4.39 for Hood, etc. It sometimes goes on sale now for $2.69 and we buy as much as we can then, but we use about 6 gallons per week :( It's even more expensive than gas!

By Emily7 on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 10:35 pm:

On sale it is $3.00 a gal. Normally it is $3.29

By Brandy on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 10:46 pm:

wow i guess it's "cheap" here then yeah right lol my goodness that's expensive everyone = ( sorry to hear that.

By Zocate on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 12:18 am:

Ad in paper has 2-1/2 gallons for $2. I think Sam's is $3.45. They usually are the cheapest, when milk's not on sale.

By Maryg on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 08:47 am:

Isn't it sad when the price of milk is more than a six-pack of soda?

I wonder how pepsi will take with my Sugar Smacks?

By Kernkate on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 08:56 am:

Here a gallon is $3.26. I never see a sale on milk around here.

By Truestori on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 02:03 pm:

Here its 5 something for two gallons. If you buy fat free it works out to be alittle cheaper.

By Paulas on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 02:36 pm:

We buy skim and it is $3.79 for 4L. I'm guessing that is close to a galloon.

By Cat on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 03:21 pm:

I think here at Wal-Mart it's around $3.50 a gallon (whole), at the commissary it's around $2.69 and at Sam's it's about $2.49. When it's on sale at Safeway it's usually 2 for $5. We usually go through three gallons of whole and one skim a week (skim is about $.50 more a gallon). I remember not so long ago (within the past year) buying it at the commissary and paying $1.89 for skim and $1.59 for whole. :(

By Lauram on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 03:39 pm:

2.49 at Costco. Over $3 on sale at the grocery store...

By Cat on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 12:15 pm:

Okay, I just went to the commissary this morning and bought milk (among other things). Whole milk was $2.43 a gallon and skim was $1.98. Maybe it's going back down??? That would be nice. :)

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 12:18 pm:

Lauram, we're in the same state. WHY does it cost so much more in my area?! Grrr...

By Lauram on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 04:02 pm:

I shop at VERY CHEAP grocery stores. I have to check the grocery store price (Big Y) for sure. I alsways get milk at Costco because it is much cheaper there. We also drink about 10 gallons a month (3 boys in the house! :) )so I need to find the cheapest prices! If I were to go to the more expensive stores, I'm sure I could pay that much! Also the price I said is for 1% if that matters....

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

So high I'm thinking about buying a cow!! :)

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 08:54 pm:

Laura, No Costco near us. BJs is 30 minutes away. We shop at Big Y, which is our favorite local grocery store. I haven't checked recently but the milk prices were similar in other local stores. We drink 6 gallons of milk (1%) a week!

I wonder if it's like gas. DH works in Hartford and can get gas much cheaper on the other side of Avon Mountain. I bet milk prices are cheaper over there, too! Argh!

By Mommyof4 on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 09:00 pm:

Crystal,

If you are in the market for a cow (or maybe 80) give me a call dh is looking to get out of the dairy business. :-)
