What do you do?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive August 2004: What do you do?
By Bellajoe on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 05:37 pm:

To those moms that are not SAHMs. What kind of work do you do? And to those SAHMs, what did you do before you stayed home?

I was in married and in college when I had my dd. I actually went to a 4 yr college here in Ohio for one year then came home. I then went to a community college where I got my Associates Degree in Office Administration-Medical Office.

I was working at a library at the circulaton desk when i had Isabella and decided to quit and stay at home while also going to school. I finally graduated a few months after i had my ds.

What about you?

By Rayanne on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 05:45 pm:

I was working at a daycare in the mornings and an instructor at an after school care center in the afternoons when I got pregnant with DD. I slowly quit my second job and worked full time at the daycare until August of last year. I got the room ready and made time for myself until November when Rylee was born and now I stay home with her.

By Andi on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 05:54 pm:

I was a Preschool teacher for 3 and 4 year olds. Then when my son was born 3 1/2 years ago I became a full time SAHM. :)

By Lauram on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:05 pm:

I am a teacher. I've taught grades K-2, gifted (GR 3-5) and math support (gr 1-5). Next year I am teaching full time math support and am going back to school. I'm starting my sixth year degree in administration. I figure it will take me four years at one class a semester- I'm in no rush- my kids are young- but by then the oldest will be 11 and the youngest 6- so I will probably be ready for an assistant principalship by then. Who knows, maybe by the time they are done with high school, I'll go got principal- or even assistant superintendent (the one in charge of curriculum)! :)

By Emily7 on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:15 pm:

I was an Office Manager for my BIL & before that I was a Motel Manager. I miss working & will most likely start again when the kids start school.

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:18 pm:

I worked more than full time (50+ hours) at a veterinary hospital as a receptionist and technician. It was a great, rewarding experience and such a fun job. I left when I was 4 months pregnant with DD because I was running around too much and ended up in the xray room when the emergency patients came in so it wasn't too safe. I still go back and visit because it was such a positive experience. But I believe that its my duty to stay home and raise our daughter, not anyone elses so thats what I do now. I surprised DH on our 1 yr. anniversary with a positive pregnancy test and each anniversary has been even greater, including last year when he came home from Iraq after being there almost 9 months, on our anniversary! :)

This is a neat post! :)

By Amyj on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:29 pm:

I teach early childhood music and movement classes for children birth-age 8. I teach about 10 hours a week. I am also the P.R. director for the program. Before children, I worked as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist and dance teacher.

By Happynerdmom on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:33 pm:

I have a teaching degree, but have decided to remain a substitute teacher. I'm lucky that my family does not depend on my income to survive, so working a few days a week is great. It's perfect for me...I get to be in the classroom, which I love, but I have very little job stress. Bell rings, I go home. No parents, grades, planning, etc. Plus, I have the same schedule as my kids, and summers off. I've been subbing at the same two schools (middle school and Jr. high) for seven years, so the teachers know me, and I feel like part of the staff.

By Colette on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:46 pm:

I've had several different jobs, I was a telephone operator, I managed an alarm monitoring company, I managed a very large answering service, I've done in-home daycare (NEVER again), I've been a dispatcher for an interstate trucking company, I've done various secretarial/admin assistant type jobs but now I work just 2 days a week in preschool during the school year. Sometimes I sub as well in other grades. Basically for the same reasons as Happynerdmom.

By Kaye on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:47 pm:

I gradutated college 7 months pg. 6 months later I went to work as a special education teacher. I had k-4, children that were mostly included, but a few that were more severe than that. I taught for a year and then stayed home. When my thrid child turned 2 I took on a job at my church, called childcare, but in essence I had a small preschool program that I wrote, taught and hired teachers for. We averaged about 200 kids a week for different church activities. I loved that job, but we have moved and now I do nothing :) I am considering going back to school to work on my masters.

By Mommyathome on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:49 pm:

I'm a full time SAHM. I actually was a full time SAHW (stay at home wife!) from the day we got married on!
Before that I worked as a full time secretary/office manager for a business up north. I ran the business after the boss moved away and wanted to keep it going.

Before that I was a full time substitute teacher.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 06:57 pm:

I'm a full time office manager for a small surveying company. I'll have been there 25 years in January! I quit for a couple of years to try to be a SAHM, and I loved doing it, but there were 4 kids and not enough money, then my DH decided to move on, so back to work I went.

I have 2 regrets in life - one is not finishing college, and the other is having to be a WOHM, when I had always REALLY wanted to be a SAHM.

By Laurazee on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 07:06 pm:

Wow, lots of teachers here! That's cool. Most of my friends are teachers, too.

I've worked at the same company for about 12 years now. My job title is "Corporate Projects Manager," which means I get sent in when things aren't going so well with a major project somewhere (like an acquisition or a major software installation), kind of like a SWAT team. I get to travel ( / ) and show up at strange places saying, "Hi! I'm from Head Office and I'm here to HELP!" (NOT always well-received). Anyway, my job is o.k. Mostly fulfilling and I have a lot of holidays. DH's career (telecom) was unstable for the past few years due to the dot-com meltdown, so I was glad to have this job, along with all the medical/dental benefits.

I'll probably keep at it until it bores me. The coolest part of my job is this: the company I work for is a CAT equipment dealer (tractors, motor graders, backhoes, etc.) and my ds is just crazy about heavy equipment. I'm thinking I'll get major cool-Mom points when I can take him to one of the equipment yards when he's older and let him operate a machine - or watch me do it (I even know how).

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 07:14 pm:

I taught for ten years before kids (Pre-K, K and Gr. 3). Now I do lots of volunteer work at my DK's school and as a Child Passenger Safety Technician.

By Momo on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 07:25 pm:

(Wow! Lots of teachers here!)

I work in the commercial lighting industry, designing lighting plans for office buildings and schools, mostly.

I worked (very) full time with my first 2 kids.
When I had the 3rd I arranged to work part time in the evening - after dh gets home - plus go into the office every Friday, which he has off. Since I HAVE to work for financial reasons, I guess I couldn't ask for a better set up.
I do like the feeling of accomplishment that working gives me, but I'd definitely give it up to be a SAHM-only!

Before that: I've been a waitress at a few places, a receptionist, a dispatcher, and a grocery clerk.

By Kellyj on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 07:38 pm:

I just started working a cancer research laboratory. Before that I was a SAHM and worked part time evenings for a Pharmacuetical company. Prior to that I was in genetics research, a veterinary assistant, a tutor, in a quality control laboratory at a brewery, pet store clerk and a burger king employee at a thruway rest stop (where I met DH :)) Wow...that's a lot of jobs and I'm only 24! I miss being a SAHM. I think I'll start researching how to get money to grow on trees.

By Katherine on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 07:43 pm:

Before I had my first ds I lead a "double life". I worked as a mortgage loan processor during the day (started there when I was 20 y/o). I went straight from that job to work as a modeling instructor from 6 pm to 9 pm. I did that until I was 24 y/o and was too pregnant to show anyone how to walk down a runway. Hilarious!

I had to go back to work when ds was 8 weeks old because we could not afford for me to stay home. I did not teach or do anymore modeling after that.

I have stayed in the mortgage business for 15 years and I am now the Vice President of Operations. I am in charge of processing in the Southeastern district. I only have to travel to two cities in GA and one in AL, so the traveling isn't bad.

I used to make more money than my dh, but he surpassed me about two years ago. We are still almost equal though, so both of our incomes are vital to our household.

It would have been nice to be home with the dks when they were younger than school age, but....I think they are turning out alright :) J/K

AMYJ..... my 8 y/o went to theatre camp this summer and a part of his curriculum was movement and music. He loved it!!

By Audreyj on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 07:58 pm:

I started working full time when I was 18. I worked as a daycare provider for the After Schoolers group. The daycare field has a lot of turnover but if you apply yourself and you don't let the "little stuff" get you down it can be a decent career. I worked in several centers in different positions until I married, then I went back to college for two years but I couldn't decide on a major. So, I went back to working daycare and my husband and I began to plan our family, I had thought that when I had my baby, I would keep it in the nursery where I worked but my baby was born premature, so that stopped my career wheels. Then 3 years later I had another premie. Both of my children are fine today, vigorous and healthy but as premies, daycare was out of the question. Then, I homeschooled for a few years and taught preschool music and Spanish at a local homeschooling facility here. I also have volunteered for VBS and nursery at my Church. This year I will be homeschooling my four year old for her pre-kindegarten program and my 7 year old wants to go to public school so my husband and I have decided to let her go this year. So I guess I'll be joining the PTA and being a "classroom Mom" this year.......

By Pamt on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 08:47 pm:

I was in charge of the 3 y/o class as a KinderCare the summer after highschool. Eleven 3 y/o's by myself---it was horrible!! At Christmas every year I worked as a gift wrapper at a very posh jewelry store. Summers in college I was a gofer for the State of Alabama Personnel Department and loved it. Since graduating college I have worked as a speech pathologist in every setting and with every population imaginable--nursing homes, home health, rehab hospital, private practice, schools, etc. I was a SAHM briefly, but we lived in a small town with no ST's and I kept getting calls to work. I eventually started seeing a couple of clients at my home during naptime, but was still at home with my boys full-time. I am now a pediatric ST at a women's and children's hospital and I love it!. I work 2.5 days a week so we can have health and dental insurance and the rest of the time I get to be a mommy. The best of both worlds! I'm also back in school again.

By Pamt on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 08:48 pm:

P.S. Karen, it's never too late to go back to school :)

By Ilovetom on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 09:01 pm:

I teach preschool- three mornings a week. We start back in September. Here is a page if anyone would care to lookie- I am the Roll Tide fan:

http://patbry.home.mchsi.com

My husband and I also own a school supply school and of course right now it's at its busiest season.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 10:07 pm:

I was working as a nurse, full-time, and continued to work full-time when my oldest was born. After about a year, I got to cut down to 4 days/week instead of 5 and worked that until we moved to Sheboygan.

Then I had two jobs that just ended up not working out, so I stayed home for about 7 years. For a few of those years, I was just working in the lunchroom at my kids' elementary school. I'm still doing that, even though my kids aren't there anymore.

For the past 2 years, I have been working part-time at the urgent care clinic just down the street. My kids are old enough to stay home by themselves, so it works out great. I'm able to be pretty flexible with my hours, since I don't have childcare issues. In fact, I often walk to work, since it only takes about 5 minutes, provided the busy street isn't too busy!

I'm glad for the time that I did have home with them. When kids were sick, or if I was sick, it was nice not having to worry about calling in sick!

Oh, I just remembered, I had about 5 years working part-time for my sister's marketing company, making ACCESS databases for her telemarketing stuff. (calling companies to do surveys abour their products) Also, I did occasional internet research, but this stuff I got to at home, on my own computer. I actually thought this was kind of fun! Once or twice, I got stuck doing the actual calling, but most of the time I made their data entry forms. I liked doing that a LOT better. Most recently, I did their webpage for them. The Mosaic Group I haven't done an access database in a LONG time! It's okay, though, since my clinic job keeps me pretty busy!

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 10:25 pm:

Wow, we sure do have a lot of teachers here!

I am glad i posted this, i 've learned alot about you all.

I forgot to mention above that I am planning on finding a part time job once my kids are in school full time. We could definitely use more money, but I really want the kids to be able to come home to me after school and not have to go to grandma's house or anything. I just remember how nice it felt to walk in the door and see my mom there ironing and watching the Young and the Restless :) or baking cookies or whatever.

By Tink on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 10:30 pm:

I was a SAHM for 6 years and I loved it but I went back to work at a school supply store (Pat!!) and I enjoy it most of the time. I only work 4 days a week (Thurs. is my day for classroom volunteering and team meetings with my ds's therapists) for 6 hour shifts while my dks are in school, so I get to be home with my dks most of the time. I am also going back to school to get my degree in Applied Behavior Analysis so that I can work with children with Autism. I stay busy but I'm satisfied on so many different levels this way.

By Brandy on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 10:44 pm:

When Alex was a little under 1 year old i went back to work after being off of work for about 3 or 4 years i went first to mcdonald's and things didn't work out there and then i went to Meijer where i currently am almost for 6 years now = ) i plan on taking on another job working in the school cafeteria this year i need to go get the application though first = )

By Jelygu on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 - 11:17 pm:

I mostly stay home, but I wait tables 15-20 hours a week for extra money. I would love to stay home, but we simply can't afford it.
I am over half finished with college, and my major is elem ed. I want to teach, but it might be awhile before I get back to school. I might wait until my ds goes to school. Anyways, I'm only 22, so I have plenty of time!

By Marcia on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 12:34 am:

Before my kids came along, I worked full time as a Child Development Counsellor/Early Childhood Resource Teacher. I worked at 3 lab schools at a community college in Toronto. My job was to adapt preschool programs to include all kids and their special needs. I also worked in the home with the parents, and taught an advocacy class to the college students. Oh, and I worked with the student teachers in the lab schools, too.

After Nicole was born, I started a home daycare. I had no interest in leaving her with someone else while I watched other people's kids.
I continued after Meghan was born.

When Kayla joined the family, we decided to do specialized foster care. Sonja moved in, and I kept the daycare going, too. A year later Tanner moved in, and I gave up the daycare kids.
I can't imagine not fostering, and know that we'll be doing it for as long as we're able to.

I'm a SAHM now, but before my oldest was born I was a Speech Therapist in an elementary school.

By Nicosmom on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 01:47 pm:

I am a dog groomer 3 days a week. Ds goes to preschool 2 of those days and the other days I'm at home with him. I am also a full/part-time student, taking evening classes. In January I will transfer from city college to State College. Don't ask what my major is though! Currently I'm taking general ed and haven't yet chosen a definite major.

By Debbie on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 01:49 pm:

I am a SAHM now. After I graduated from college I went to work for a major telecommunications co. I managed a sales group in a call center. I loved my job and found it very fast paced and rewarding. I met my dh there and worked until I had my 1st ds. I was out on maternity leave with him, when dh got a promotion in another state. Since we had to move, I decided to stay home. Now that our ds's are getting bigger, my old boss keeps asking dh when I am coming back to work. I love being a SAHM and I don't plan on going back to work anytime soon. I am lucky that dh makes a good enough salary that I don't have to work.

By Paulas on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 01:54 pm:

I am a teacher as well. Since my children have come along, I mostly have worked PT or as a substitute. Last year I worked FT with a 35 minute commute each way. It was a bit of a struggle. I don't know what is in store for me this year. We'll wait and see.

By My2cuties on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 02:04 pm:

I worked at a department store for a year, then I realized what I really wanted to do so I quit and started working at a daycare (working with children ages 2-3) I loved it!!! I had to quit though after a year because I got pregnant with my oldest dd and the children in that class were quite the little kickers. I did a little babysitting here and there but couldn't do it long because for some reason I am really sick when I am pregnant (like the whole time!) So I have been a stay at home mom since I was 3 months pregnant with my oldest dd. I am going to go to College when they start school (4 more years).

By Melissa on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 07:55 pm:

I am the Program Director for The state of Maine Family Planning Program for 2 counties. In a lot of states it is called Planned Parenthood but it is the same program. I do all the grant management and oversee all the staff and I also do the counseling piece for the clinic where my office is. I either love or hate my job depending on the day. I love seeing patients it's the admin stuff I don't care for.

By Ilovetom on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 10:11 pm:

Tink! Get out! Do you love Carson Dellosa or what? LOL.

By Tink on Thursday, August 5, 2004 - 10:35 pm:

Love it!!! Their stuff is always the best! Do you have their new D.J. Inkers line? I love the birthday bears. I helped my mom decorate her classroom today with all the Creative Teacher Press Hawaiian borders and their Sealife BB Aid. I love it sssoooo much! Sorry, everybody!

I worked for a title company before we were transfered to Okinawa. I pretty much was a SAHM for the 3 years we were there. When we got back and had orders to Pendleton, I worked for an escrow comapny and loved my job. The people I worked with were awsome. Then dh's orders changed and we had to come here. I worked at the commissary for a little while decorating cakes but now I am a consultant for a gourmet food company (see my profile) and a Key Volunteer which keeps me pretty busy with the up coming deployment.

By Sue3 on Friday, August 6, 2004 - 01:31 pm:

Before kids I was a dietary supervisor at a retirement home. When I became pg with my 2nd child I quit to be a SAHM.
Just this Jan.I opened up a hair salon in my home and I also do some cooking for a friend 3x a week.
What a fun post!

Prior to my sons birth I worked as a manager at The Home Depot. I quit so I could be home with my children. At times we struggled but I am happy we made the choice.
Since leaving there I have done a few things to bring in income and be home. I have done in home daycare (still watch 2 kids now ages 6 and 8 that I have had since birth) and selling on ebay.
Currently, my full time job is homeschooling. I pulled my children out of public school last February and now wish I had done it sooner. It is a lot of work but the rewards have been great.

Gosh, I can't remember! lol No, I guess I do. :) While in High School I worked at Meijer (the one Sue goes to all the time!). When I graduated I went into the Air Force and spent 2 1/2 years active duty. When the AF decided to move my now dh (then bf) I told them I wanted out and it happened to be during the force reductions so they let me out in December of '91. Dh and I got married in Feb of '92 and I worked as a nanny for a year and then we moved. I was pregnant with Robin so I didn't bother trying to get a job. I was a SAHM for 9 months after he was born and then took another nanny job that allowed me to bring him with me. I worked for them for about 6 months and quit when I was pregnant with Randy. I stayed home with the boys for three more years and then was a Pampered Chef consultant for about 1 1/2 years. I started doing family childcare when Randy started preschool and have been doing it every since (five years next month). I don't plan on working outside the home until both boys are independant enough to not need me here (which might be a while for Robin! lol). I figure I'll have lots of time to work somewhere else when they're grown. Then of course, maybe I'll just stay home and watch grand babies. :)

By Beth on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 10:29 am:

Well I worked as a caseworker with children in Foster Care before I had any kids. I decided when ds was born I would rather work weekends and stay home during the week with him. So that was what I did. It was at a group home with with mentally ill adults. But after about 15 months I went back to work full time. With children who had been sexually abused. I continued to sub at the group home. I quit that after dd was born and went back to working weekends at the group home. I am now the weekday house manager at the group home. Its not a bad job compared to working in foster care and dk's that have been abused. That is very tuff work. The only thing I don't like now is I work second. It was nice when my dk's were young but now that they are starting to start school its hard. So I am hoping that I will get a day position that just became avaible at work. I unforunately have to work. Dh is a social worker also and they just don't make enough.

By Mrse on Saturday, August 7, 2004 - 11:12 am:

Well my story is all about cleaning that is what I do. I have worked for a couple of house cleaning companys, a restaurant, but the best cleaning job I have had, was the one I am at now, which is cleaning the largest log cabin in canada. When I first started the job 8 years ago, I was doing all the rental's, the building is rented out for everything imaginable, weddings, wrestling matches etc.. I also did the banking, and keeping up the grass, plants, etc.. The city took over the building I work in, so now, most of my job several other people do, so I only do the cleaning now, which I tell you it is really hard to let go, once you have been doing all the other stuff, for so many years. Right now I am contracting cleaning for the city, hoping to be put on payroll, as their are others in line for my job, I hope I get the postion since I have been their 7 years longer than any of the city staff, who would be up for my postion. If it does not work out, I will have a nervous break down and most likely not work at all. This has been going on for two years not knowing when or if I am going to have a job, so i am a bit stressed out.
