Just want some sympathy

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2004: Just want some sympathy
By Katherine on Thursday, July 29, 2004 - 05:32 pm:

You guys are becoming my good friends and I really need a "cyber hug". :)

DH won't come near me because I have had pink eye for a week now. Well, until today we thought it was pink eye. I woke up last Thursday with the whole side of my head swollen. It looked like someone punched me in the eye. I went to the DR. and they gave me some ointment that not only didn't help at all, I think it made it worse. I tried to go to work, but they sent me home.

I went back to the DR. today and she gave me some stronger medicine and referred me to an eye doctor. They can't see me until tomorrow, so the regular Dr. told me that if they swell any more today to go the the ER.

I have never heard of anyone having pink eye that swells almost their whole head, burns, stings, HURTS, throbs and itches. I guess I will find out tomorrow afternoon if that is what it really is.

I just wanted to share my misery with everyone, LOL.

((((((((((Kathrine)))))))))).

My Mom just got over a massive eye infection that sounds simular except she had a bump on her eyeball too. I am so sorry that nothing has helped & will say a little prayer that they figure this out.
Tell your dh that you need a hug & if it were reversed you would give him one.

{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{Katherine}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} and don't hesitate to go to the ER if it gets worse - please.

A lady that I used to work with had something like you. It ended up being a spider bite. Can you see if there might be two holes near your eye? If so, then most likely, that is what it is.

I hope you feel better soon.

Lots of cyber hugs Katherine. I hope you feel better soon.

My Mom had what she thought was pink eye. However, it turned out to be some type of eye infection. She also ended up at the eye doctor after it got so bad she couldn't stand it. Her doctor gave her drops for it. It was a while ago, so I don't remember how long it took before it was better. Hopefully, you will get some relief after your doctor's visit tomorrow.

Ouch!! Definitely sounds like it is NOT pinkeye. Hope you get some relief soon.

The first time I had pink eye, the doc gave me the normal med for it, which is sulfa based. (cetamide) My eyes got so much worse, and felt like I had glass in them. I had to go to the ER on Christmas day, and I couldn't even open my eyes on the car ride there. It ended up I was quite allergic to sulfa. The ended up giving me a very strong drug, and it cleared it right up. It was horrible!!!!
I hope the doc fixes you up quickly!!!

Be extremely careful. In the middle of April, my dh had what his doctor thought was pink eye. It didn't clear up in a day or two so he was sent to an optometrist who diagnosed him with a glaucoma attack. The internal pressure in his eye was five times higher than normal. Three and a half months later we are still dealing with this. Turns out, he has a chicken pox virus in his eye.

Don't get me wrong, his story is not normal but pink eye should look much better 24 hours after starting medicine. If not, you need a specialist.

By Emily7 on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 01:36 pm:

Kathrine how did your appointment go?

By Audreyj on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 02:32 pm:

Hey.

Look, I don't want to "make problems" where there aren't any--but this sounds like an allergic reaction. Could you be allergic to the ointment or the eye drops? Also, check your face, you may have an insect bite or a spider bite. Might ought to get this checked out again by the doc. "Dr.Audrey Jones, Fake M.D." here.

But seriously, it sounds more like an allergic reaction. AJ

By Katherine on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 04:22 pm:

I just got back from the eye Dr and he said it is pink eye, but that some people get it much worse than others. I am allergic to sulfa and the 1st drops I had were sulfa based.

Anyway, he said that some types of conjunctivitis are viral and that the antibiotics they were giving me wouldn't help anyway. I am now on a steroid drop to reduce the swelling.

We'll see how it goes......

By Emily7 on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 04:46 pm:

Oh, I am allergic to sulfa & know what it does on a cut, I can't imagine what it would do to your eye.
I hope it gets better soon.

By Amyj on Friday, July 30, 2004 - 06:23 pm:

I also had an allergic reaction to the medicine for pink eye. I was visiting my brother in Canada and my eye hurt worse than anything I had ever felt. The doctor in Canada told me that I had Iritis, an infection of the Iris and it can cause blindness. I flew home immediatly and went to my eye doctor who said that I am allergic to sulfa and had a reaction. He gave me new drops and it cleared up in a few days. Hope you feel better soon!

By Melanie on Saturday, July 31, 2004 - 01:09 am:

((HUGS)) I hope the steroid drop is doing the trick.

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, July 31, 2004 - 09:23 am:

I hope your eye and face get better soon.

As for the sulfa allergy, be sure that this goes on your medical records with ALL of your doctors. I would also suggest that you make up a small card with your critical contact information (i.e. family, main doctor) and add to it in all caps ALLERGIC TO SULFA and anything else you may be allergic to, put it in plastic, and put it with your driver's license. Heaven forbid you are in an accident, your driver's license is the first thing emergency personnel will go for to identify you and having that information right there can't hurt.
