Poker hand question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive July 2004: Poker hand question
By Annie2 on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 07:47 pm:

If any of you or dhs know anything about Texas Hold 'Em, I have a question for you.

Which hand would win: Both players have two pairs

Player 1: 2 K's/ 2 3's

Player 2: 2 Q's/ 2 J's

Thanks. I can't find this answer anywhere! :)

in our house lol player two would win cuz of the two pair of face cards are highter value ...

By Annie2 on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

Really? I played last night with dh and friend. I was player 1. They thought the same thing but weren't sure. I, of course, said the top pair of K's would win. Thanks, Jewlz :)

Anyone else?

By Tink on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

2 Pair of face cards would win, I think.

By Gammiejoan on Sunday, July 18, 2004 - 09:16 pm:

Annie, I've always thought that player 1 would win. I think the rule is that when comparing hands with two pairs, the hand with the highest pair wins, irrespective of the rank of the other cards. Another way to put it is that the hand with the top pair wins; and only if the top pairs are equal are the low pairs used to break the tie. Of course, I am referring to basic poker rules and am not really familiar with the rules of Texas Hold 'Em. I would think, though, that the rules for which hand wins would be the same. I think your hand with two Kings won, but I'm no expert at cards.

Player one wins...I found this on a poker rules site.

Between two such hands, the higher ranking pair of each is first compared, and the higher pair wins. If both have the same top pair, then the second pair of each is compared. Finally, if both hands have the same two pairs, the kicker A kicker, also called a side card, is a card in a poker hand that does not itself take part in determining the rank of the hand, but that may be used to break ties between hands of the same rank. For example, the hand Q-Q-10-5-2 is ranked as a pair of queens. The 10, 5, and 2 are kickers. This hand would defeat any hand with no pair, or with a lower-ranking pair, and lose to any higher-ranking hand. But the kickers can be used to break ties between other hands that also have a pair of queens. For example, Q-Q-K-3-2 would win (because its K kicker outranks the 10), but Q-Q-10-4-3 would lose (because its 4 is outranked by the 5).

So they cheated you :)

Yep, Kings over Queens wins. the lower pairs are only relevent if the higher pairs are the same rank.

I've been watching celebrity poker on Bravo and they play texas hold em on there. Kings would beat out the Queens. Your hand should have won.

Thanks, everyone! I also have been watching the poker on Bravo. That is why I had become interested in playing. I love it. We played for $2.00. It was fun.

They didn't cheat me, they LET me win the hand but they weren't convinced my hand was better. :)

Dh's friend (he's my friend too, along with his wife) just popped by to give his daughter something, she is sleeping over...anyway, he said he talked to people at work and said my hand was the winner!

We're going to play next weekend but for $3.00! :)
