By Daddyof3 on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 - 02:13 pm:

As the 4th of July has come and gone
the glimmer of fireworks faded and I sit alone
on the verge of tears
thinking back to our past years
all the wars fought in the cold and mud
just how much have we sacrificed in human blood
around the world we have fought
with our souls this country was bought
we hold our freedoms dear
but is the price paid clear
even as a soldier I sometimes forget
the heroes I have met
every day they stand to my left and right
together we have fought and again will fight
all will make sacrifice
some will pay the ultimate price
remember our countrys fallen
for they fell for you.

Thanks guys I felt really compelled to write something this morning. I was thinking about the friends I have lost in Iraq and just started to type. I really didn't give it much thought with all the festivities going on during the weekend of the 4th. Then I suddenly remembered why we celebrate the 4th, and missed those whom I knew and so selflessly gave their lives to protect ours. These were men who I worked with and even ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner with. We lived in 150+ degree temperatures ate dusty food and did what we felt what was right in every situation that arose. I thought about what it must have been like in veitnam, WW1, WW2 and every other battle, war, and skirmish we have been in. I am truly grateful to those soldiers and their families, and am also proud to be an American soldier. Just a little insight as to why I wrote this.
