Flooding in the Midwest

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Flooding in the Midwest
By Cocoabutter on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 12:44 am:

Hi everyone!

I haven't been very good at sitting down at the puter lately. We have been busy keeping up with the weather, the yard work, and visiting with my in-laws. They live on Thornapple River in Hastings, and the flooding there is so bad.

Is it bad anywhere else? Anyone got any stories?

By Marg on Wednesday, May 26, 2004 - 07:38 am:

Lisa the weather this Spring is almost like August here in south central PA (near Gettysburg).

All the month of May it has been extremely hot and humid high 80's (usual temps in the 70s). This creates good conditions for powerful thunderstorms that we receive almost everyday. I believe our rainfall so far for May is almost 7".

Our power has gone out 4 times within the past two weeks for more than 4 hours at a time:(

I have to be honest, the weather doesn't make me happy.

Last night 2 powerful thunderstorms went through, one at 6:00 pm and the other at 4 a.m. Where is our spring weather?

Wow, Lisa. I'll have to call my mom and see how tall her grass is! She's not in an area that floods, but she does end up with a lake in her front yard (she's in Clarksville). We're supposed to get rain today, but we'll see. It was supposed to rain yesterday, too and never did. Stay dry, Girl. :)

Sheboygan is having it's 6th wettest May in the last 104 years!

Wet May article

Since we haven't had any rain in 24 hours, my yard finally feels a lot less soggy under my feet!

Hey Dawn, was there a tornado your way recently? I thought I saw something on the news, I was thinking about you. There's been so many I can't keep count.

I just emailed our meteorologists at channel 8 in Grand Rapids, MI, and asked about our rainfall. We have had, so far, our 3rd wettest May on record, with a total rainfall of 8.34 inches. But- the month isn't over yet!

There was flooding in Southeast Nebraska this past weekend. Also several tornados and the entire town of Hallam Nebraska is gone...total devistation there was one fatality but everyone else was OK. We spent all of Saturday night in the basement and my 6 year old is terrified of storms anyway so it wasn't a good night. They talked about the tornado(s) that went through Hallam (25 miles south of us) at school but I have managed to keep the newspaper pictures away from her I'm not sure she could handle it she is so scared when it even starts to rain.

Marg, where do you live? Cat I bet if your Mom usually has water in her back yard after a storm
she will have it now also.
I can`t believe all the rain we have had.
Some of the farmers around here may have to re plant their corn!
Our basement has flooded and our back yard is still like a sponge,I can`t mow it.
I did mow the front today though. They are saying more rain tomorrow also.
As Lisa said though Hastings got it bad ,I am about 10 miles from there.
They showed the peoples houses on the news tonight and they are more that half way covered with water.
I feel so bad for them. The Red Cross is helping out and has opened up the High School so people can get dry.
I wonder if their house will be ruined ?
The water crested today ,meaning it is starting to get lower .One whole foot from yesterday.
BUT , it is going to rain again tomorrow and they forecasted rain all week end.
It does not look good.

tammie, I am so sorry to hear that. Here I am complaining about a little extra water, and Mother Nature had such bigger things to do elsewhere. When I was a kid, I didn't mind storms as much as I did tornadoes. I was 11 in 1981 when a tornado hit Kalamazoo, just 30 miles to the southeast of where I lived. I used to have dreams about tornadoes that didn't stop until I was in my 20's.
