Ground beef...am i weird?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: Ground beef...am i weird?
By Ladypeacek on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:04 pm:

Now everyone that sees me do this looks at me like i am crazy and my dh did too the first time until he tasted the difference. When i brown the meat for tacos or sloppy joes ect....i put it in a collander to drain it but then i rinse it with hot water. I do this to get all the extra fat out of it and it just tastes better to me. Am i weird? Does any one else do this?

By Yjja123 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:06 pm:

Yep--I do!

By Trina~moderator on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:21 pm:

No, you're not weird! I used to do the same thing, but now I buy 93% fat free hamburg so it's not necessary.

By Happynerdmom on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:30 pm:

I do that if I get regular ground beef...it's too fatty otherwise. My preference is to get ground chuck, then I don't have to do it.

By Tink on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:40 pm:

DH taught me that. I think it makes a world of difference, especially when there is a sauce added.

By Texannie on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:41 pm:

I always do that too.

By Vbw1978 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:41 pm:

nothing wrong with that.
i buy ground sirloin so that there is no fat ....

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 04:49 pm:

I do it too!! I can buy 78% lean and drain it for MUCH cheaper than 90% lean...

By Emily7 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 05:10 pm:

Never even thought of rinsing it, thanks!

By Debbie on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

Yes, I do it. I buy the lean meat, but still rinse it.

By Amecmom on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 06:25 pm:

I've never even heard of rinsing cooked meat! Doesn't it take away the flavor?

We buy the extra extra lean ground beef so there is no reason for me to do that either.
I do rinse the meat *before* I cook it though.

By Ilovetom on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 06:44 pm:

YES! Learned it from *Weight Watchers*. LOL.

By Karen~moderator on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 08:22 pm:

I do it too, and I buy lean ground beef.

By Annie2 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 08:44 pm:

My DH hates it when I drain the meat if I am making Bolognese sauce....never mind rinsing it as well!

By Sue3 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 09:22 pm:

I always do that also , even when I buy the lean ground beef.

By Amy~moderator on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 01:18 am:

I buy extra lean ground beef. I don't like to buy the fatty kind because it also comes with gristle, yuck! However, you are definitely not weird - I know a lot of people who rinse their ground beef after browning!

By Ladypeacek on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 01:22 am:

wow, i was really starting to think i was crazy, i do buy the 92% lean and rinse it anways, hoping to get rid of a little more of that 8%, lol! I don't think it takes away from the flavor at all, in fact i think you can taste the beef better, without rinsing all i taste is grease! YUCK! My dh loved the difference!

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 04:31 am:

My DH thought I was nuts when he first saw me doing that. I had to explain the whole *fat* thing to him. Mind you, this was a man who lived off of beef and ate burgers and fries for lunch every day. One heart attack later, he now understands! LOL

By Bellajoe on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 07:54 am:

I have never heard of doing that! I would think it would make it soggy and less tasty.

I do buy the extra lean ground beef.

By Kaye on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 09:08 am:

If I don't rinse it, then I take a paper towel and kind of dry it off..LOL. It does take away some flavor, but I guess all in the name of health???? LOL

By Ladypeacek on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 09:45 am:

Well for those who have never done it, i suggest trying it! It really does make it taste better IMO!! Not only that but cuts back on all that grease.

By Marg on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 10:48 am:

Kenna,

If it still looks greasy after draining and running hot water over it, I take paper towel and squeeze the excess water and grease out of the hamburger.

I also clean out the frying pan, wash and dry, before I place the hamburger back in it to make my meal. A lot of grease sticks to the pan.

I laugh because dh will say how my homemade meals are not greasy towards restaurant meals. If he only knew what we go through to make it better, lol!
