More Bridesmaid Outfit Issues and an Update

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive May 2004: More Bridesmaid Outfit Issues and an Update
By Kate on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

I don't know if anyone will remember, but awhile back I posted about a bridesmaid gown being so clingy I was worried about panty lines, and then I recently posted asking where to get silver shoes to go with it.

WELL, here's my update and yet ANOTHER issue, LOL! The dress is NOT a problem with the panty lines!! I don't understand it, 'cause it sure was a problem in the store!! Maybe they've changed the fabric in some way, but I'll be okay in regular underwear and slip, thankfully! Also, I found lots of silver shoes finally. I'm now choosing between two pair which were only ten and fifteen each!

Now for my other issue, sigh....the shoes are strappy, dressy, high heeled sandals. What do I do about pantyhose??? I'm not a bare legs person, especially for something as formal as a wedding! Now, when I was a teen, I wore hose with open toe shoes all the time....but now with the big no hose craze, I don't know what to do. Obviously I wouldn't buy reinforced toe stockings, but what about the regular ones with just the one thin line at the toes that you can tuck under your toes so it doesn't show?? Is that totally taboo these days? I mean, personally, I find toes quite 'icky'!! I'd rather cover them up with a sheer stocking, but not if I'm committing some horrible fashion blunder! I've heard of 'toeless hose' which sounds like an awful idea. How do you manage to get the right shoe so that it covers the 'transition area' from stocking to bare foot?? And what about the color difference? Even in nude stockings, I'm sure my ugly toes would be a different color from my stocking-ed legs... The dress is formal, and is floor length. Comments?? The bride doesn't care one way or the other.

I would wear hose. I don't think a dressy gown is going to finished without hose, I actually think it would look a little tacky. I would tuck the seam under your foot. What are the other ladies doing?

By Amecmom on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 08:53 pm:

Go with sheer hose that are sandal foot. These have either no line or the very thin line. If the dress is floor length, no one is going to be looking at your feet anyway.
I was in a bridal party last year and I honestly can't tell you if any of the girls wore hose or not. I just wasn't looking.
I didn't. It was just too hot, but I'm very comfortable with not wearing hose to begin with, especially in a long dress. Have fun and I'm glad the panty lines are not an issue.

I've always been under the impression is was a big faux pas to wear hose with strappy shoes. Since the dress is floor length, I would get a pedicure, and wear no hose. If you are going to be uncomfortable, you can go ahead and wear the hose, but I wouldn't.

By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 10:19 pm:

Sheer sandalfoot hose, and tuck a couple of spares in your husband's pocket, your purse, or in the car. They can run like crazy, especially if someone steps on your toes (I hope that doesn't happen!). That's what I did when wearing strappy shoes for my son's wedding. And yes, get a pedicure, so your feet look really great in those strappy shoes.

By Mommyathome on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 10:23 pm:

I would go no hose. But, I'm comfortable doing that.
When DH's little brother got married a couple summers ago, I was a bridesmaid and we were all bare-legged, and bare-foot! We had short summer-y pink dresses. It was the brides idea, and I was skeptical about the no shoes thing, but it looks adorable in the pictures.
The bride and groom were dressed very formal, and all the groomsmen were in full tuxes.

By Tink on Sunday, May 23, 2004 - 11:58 pm:

I also would go without nylons, which I'm comfortabloe with. I've always been under the impression that open toed shoes with them is a no-no. Either way I would do the pedicure and you should do whatever you are most comfortable. No one is going to pay much attention to your feet when your dress is floor length.

By Andi on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 12:00 am:

You don't wear hose with Open Toed strappy shoes. I agree with Crystal, go get a pedicure and leave the hose at home for the day. It's a long dress so nobody will know and you feet will look much nicer in strappy shoes with no hose.

:)

By Amy~moderator on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 01:58 am:

It is a big no-no to wear hose with open toe shoes. I personally would not wear hose. But, if it makes you more comfortable, then go ahead. But, yes, according to current fashion, hose and open toe shoes do not mix. I say get the pedicure and wear no hose.

By Karen~moderator on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 07:50 am:

I wouldn't wear them. Jen is maid of honor in her friend's wedding next month and they aren't wearing them.

I just bought two long gowns for our cruise in November and I don't plan on wearing them. I hate wearing hose anyway.

By Texannie on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 08:21 am:

I am 45 and to me, hose with sandals look old lady! LOL Treat yourself to a pedicure and leave the pantyhose alone.

By Bellajoe on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 08:56 am:

I HAVE YOUR SOLUTION! I was in a wedding a few years ago with the same problem! GO to Victoria's Secret and tell them your problem they have pantyhose especially for that! They are hose with the toe part cut out so you will wear hose, but nothing on the toe part. I think other places may have this too. i was so excited to see they had something for this.

By Pamt on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 09:41 am:

I agree with the other *no hose* advocates. Isn't the wedding in the south (North Carolina I was thinking)? It will be hot and going without hose in the south is just a common and accepted thing...even with a dressy dress. I can't even remember the last time I wore hose to church! I also think hose with open toed shoes looks bad, whether they are sandalfoot or not---looks like you have webbed toes. Since it's a long dress anyway your legs won't be showing, so I would definitely leave the hose at home.

By Texannie on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 10:02 am:

If you just don't feel comfortable without them, you can get footless hose. I have worn them under capri pants when I wanted to have a smooth line. I like Spanx

By Dawnk777 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 10:40 am:

That would be perfect for me! I don't like not wearing hose if I'm wearing a dress, since my thighs rub together and get sweaty. Ugh. I didn't know it was a fashion no-no to wear pantyhose with open-toed shoes! LOL! I have probably done it, although with sheer hose. I wore shoes to my wedding, so it didn't matter. They were white lacy pumps.

By Eve on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 10:50 am:

I would ask what everyone else is wearing! Talk to the bride. I wouldn't dare show up as a bridesmaid with no hose without asking. Go with what the bride wants. If she wants you to wear hose, wear sandle toe. No one will even notice, but better to have a happy bride. Good luck.:)

By Kate on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 12:13 pm:

The wedding is in West Virginia in one month. The bride, herself, is not wearing stockings. I, personally, hate feet and never go barefoot. I can't imagine not wearing stockings to a wedding, and especially with a long, formal dress! But maybe it's a northern thing. I'm so out of my comfort range, LOL! I agree with whoever on the bare legs in the office post said that they like stockings as a layer of warmth in the arctic air conditioning, and with Ginny who doesn't like the feel of bare feet in shoes. But I don't want to be the only person there in stockings if no one else is wearing them!! It just seems so WRONG, though!! Sigh.....

By Janet on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Well, I never knew it was "wrong" to wear sheer-toed hose with open-toed shoes! I do, and will continue to...LOL

By My2girlygirls on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

I have learned that open toe strappy shoes are more comfortable without hose, with hose your feet slde forward and it can get very uncomfortable. I also vote for no hose!

By My2girlygirls on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 12:47 pm:

that should be your feet SLIDE forward....

By Jessicac1979 on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 07:10 pm:

i was just in a wedding on may 1st and we were strappy opened toed shoes and none of the bridesmaids wore panty hose we all went without. so i guess either way it doesnt matter whatever you want to do but i agree with a few above i have never been the one to think hose looks good with opened toed shoes. our dresses however were long enough you barely saw our feet anyway.

By Kay on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 08:40 pm:

Just got some over-the-shoulder advice from my 13 yr old dd ..... she said "do NOT, repeat, do NOT wear hose with open toe shoes". :)

If you watch the awards shows, none of the stars wear hose with even those glamorous old-Hollywood gowns. To me, toes are not the most gorgeous part of the body, but I think with painted toenails, the look is quite 'finished'.

Besides, I agree about hose making shoes 'slide' forward more....I would be so uncomfortable walking down the aisle in anything but snugly-fitting (or strapped) shoes.

By Amecmom on Monday, May 24, 2004 - 10:20 pm:

The bottom line is do what makes you comfortable. No one NO ONE will be looking at your feet or walking in your shoes but you! It will be a long day. Just be happy with yourself.

By Amy~moderator on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 12:29 am:

I agree with Ame - do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I mean, honestly, who cares?!?!?! It IS a fashion no-no, but give me a break - we are not in Hollywood! As Eve said, ask the bride how she feels about it. I believe you said she didn't care either way. So, there you have it! :) I hope you enjoy yourself, Kate!

By Janet on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 10:22 am:

LOL So THAT'S why I've never been on an awards show! Sorry, y'all can't talk me out of my hose.. I'm just a fashion maverick! :)

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 12:20 pm:

Janet, one day it will come into style, and you'll be a trendsetter!!! LOL

By Vbw1978 on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 12:29 pm:

i am getting married in june no one is wearing hose me or the bridesmaids we are getting pedicures & that is good enough we are all wearing open toed shoes also. the dresses are all long enough that you cant see the feet anyways ! :)
the last 2 weddings that i have been too everyone wore no hose either

By Janet on Tuesday, May 25, 2004 - 04:45 pm:
