Hello, we are from NC and my DH is looking at being transferred to Austin this coming summer. I am seeking any type of info anyone can give me about this city. Do you like living there? What are some good schools in your area and good neighborhoods for/with kids (our kids are 4 and 18 mos)? I have been doing some research online and Round Rock looks like a very nice place to live. Also, a weird question...I heard there are a lot of snakes in TX, I won't be stumbling on one everytime I go out in my back yard will I? Thanks in advance for any info and advice you can give me. We are excited about the possible move.
Carrie

If you live in Round Rock you will be safe from snakes! It's a large suburban area. Round Rock was once a separate city, but the boundaries of Austin have grown that they have merged together.
I am in Houston, but my dh went to the University of Texas and his parents live in Georgetown which is just north of Round Rock. Austin is very pretty, it's part of the Texas Hill Country. There are some beautiful lakes nearby. It's very laid back and casual. There is alot of money in some parts thanks to Dell Computers...Dellunaires. I am not that familiar with the school system, but I have heard good things about the Westlake school system.

I have an Aunt in Dripping Springs area. She lived in Dallas for years, then moved to Austin. Has been there for 7 yrs now I think and they LOVE IT.

Thats really all the info I have. Oh, as far as snakes go, I am originally from Texas (as is all of my family) and have only seen a couple of snakes in the 31 yrs of living / visiting there. They were on my grandparents farm. My Aunt always mentions deer in here yard, but never has mentioned stumbling over snakes. ;)

Good luck!

LOL snakes...yep they are here. As far as Austin I don't know. Mostly I think it depends on what is around you. I live in a subdivision, but at the edge so there is a field not too far away. I probably see a snake once a week, just little ones though. The big ones stay away! Austin is beautiful, but I don't know much about where to live if you are going there.

I lived in Austin for 10 years. After I got married, we bought our first home in Round Rock. Unfortunately, we only lived there for 18 months and then we got transferred out of state. It was 6 years ago when we lived there and I know it has grown a lot since then. I LOVE the Austin area and wish we still lived there. The schools are great in Round Rock. I really liked Round Rock because it has sort of a small town feel, but you are still close to Austin. The one bad thing about Austin is the traffic. Where will you be working??? This may make a difference on where you want to live. If you will be working in north Austin, the drive won't be too bad. But if you will be working in the south area, then it will be a long drive with traffic. Austin is such a great city. There is so much to do. There is great food and live music. I am green with envy!! If you have a specific questions let me know. I have lots of family still in Austin and the surrounding area, so I could find out whatever you need to know.

PS. You won't find snakes in the city and suburbs!!

Conni, my parents just build a home in Dripping Springs on 2 aces of land. It is their dream home. They are so excited. They are retiring next year.

I'm about 30 minutes North of Round Rock, and this is a beautiful area. And no there aren't a whole bunch of snakes in this part of Texas. I've been here 2 years and haven't seen one. There are all sorts of things to do in TX, especially if you have kids. There are natural caverns, theme parks, water parks, all in the Austin surrounding area. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:18 am:

Kaye, what part of Texas are you in that you see snakes weekly? I can honestly say that I have probably only seen one in my life and that was camping. My son is in scouts and has only ever come across one or two while he was camping.

I went to UT-Austin and it's a great place. I didn't have snake issues there, but I did have scorpions at one house I lived at. That was a new suburbany sort of area in West Austin off FM2222 in the hills and I guess the new construction stirred up the scorpions. I lasted 3 months there and I moved.

We do see snakes at our lakehouse which is on the TX-Oklahoma border, but not in the city.

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:36 am:

Mommmie, that area has just exploded in growth! What years were you there? Were you in a sorority?

By Dotdognc on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:47 am:

Thank you all so much for all the helpful info! DH works for IBM that's why we were looking at Round Rock, it seems close. Thanks for calming my snake fears, that's the only thing I was real worried about LOL! We are very excited and hope that DH will get the job in Austin, we have been in NC for 10 years and are ready for a change. The schools here are terrible so we are excited about the possiblity of a place with good schools.

By Debbie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 11:53 am:

Since your dh is going to working at IBM, then Round Rock would be a great place to live. I think you will really like it My dh's cousin lives in Round Rock and they have two children about the same age as yours. If you need help with anything, let me know.

I've only been to Austin once, my SIL lives there and it was very pretty. I grew up in Deer Park and currently live in the Southwest area of Houston by the Galleria and can say that Texas is a great place to live!

Welcome!

christy

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 12:31 pm:

I grew up in Memorial, live a little bit west now.

I was at UT 1981-1986. I was an Alpha Phi. Where you there, Texannie?

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 03:46 pm:

Well, I am much older, but I knew some girls that were Alpha Phi's. My dh was a Sigma Nu, back when they were on campus..don't think they are there anymore..bad boys! I went to SMU and was a Chi Omega.

By Dotdognc on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 04:04 pm:

Can anyone explain what M.u.d. Taxes are?

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 04:07 pm:

Muncipal Utility District Taxes. The builder of a subdivision can set up a MUD to service the utlitities. You predominantly see them in new or master planned subdivisions.
Here's a good definition.

By Dotdognc on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

Thank you Texannie! I couldn't find a definition online since I didn't know what it stood for.

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 04:15 pm:

you are too fast..I edited my answer to say that you see them mainly in new subdivisions. LOL
You are welcome.

By Kaye on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 07:47 pm:

WE pay MUD taxes. I dont' think they are way too much although they do push our taxes up. But we only pay water bills every other month and they never exceed 30 dollars. I look at it as a prepay for my water!

By Kay on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 08:28 pm:

I live in Waco, and although I've loved it these 45 years, if I had to choose another place to live it would be the Austin area. Round Rock is really nice - I think you'd like it.

As for snakes, you're more likely to find them in the more wooded areas, or areas with lots of rocks, etc.

By Pamt on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 10:03 pm:

Not to butt in here, but...Texannie, I was a Chi O too at the University of South Alabama. (What is it?......) When were you at SMU? One of my best friends from highschool was a Chi O there from 1986-1990.

I lived in Fort Worth for 3 years and never saw a snake, but during a brief time we live in Covington (in between Waco and Ft Worth) we did have a girl at our church bitten by a copperhead, but she was fine. However, I NEVER saw a snake. Went to a conference in Austin once. It is a pretty city with great music and awesome Mexican food!

By Texannie on Thursday, April 29, 2004 - 10:33 pm:

Pam T..small world!!! I was there from 76-80, so probably didn't know your friend.
It's funny, I remember that part, but not what's next! LOL

By Texannie on Friday, April 30, 2004 - 12:05 am:

Yippee....I remembered!!!!
