Snails!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Snails!

Darn snails have crossed the line. They are eating my roses! How they make it past all the thorns, I do not know. Is there something that I can use to deter the snails that would not harm my turtle and dogs.

One popular type of bait is beer. Although there are better uses for beer, some die-hard practitioners swear that it reduces snail and slug populations. Pour beer into a shallow pan and sink it into the ground with the pan edges sticking up 1/8 to 1/4 inch. Snails and slugs are attracted to the yeasty smell of beer, and they fall into the pan and drown.

They actually have a spray now for your yard and sidewalk called snail-be-gone. I saw it in the store yesterday. I haven't tried it yet but that may help!

Here's a web site which includes what I remember about detering snails and slugs:
http://www.diynet.com/diy/ip_other/article/0,2029,DIY_13970_2269264,00.html

Be careful about using the spray. It is potentially toxic to animals and children. While it probably works, I'd stay away from it unless you have no animals or children around your garden. From the web site of the South Australian Government:
"Snail baits mostly consist of powders or pellets, which contain metaldehyde or methiocarb and are spread on garden beds. It is not known how metaldehyde works but methiocarb acts like all carbamates to interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses.

Snail baits are a hazard to pets, animals and birds and a safer alternative such as the one listed below should be considered."

If you type snails +garden, or snails +garden +deter in Google, you'll get a lot of web sites giving advice. Just use common sense as to which sites are truly giving advice or just selling products. I think you will find most agree with the website link I posted first above.
