Help!!! Need hints for housebreaking. Do have crate.

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Help!!! Need hints for housebreaking. Do have crate.
By Dawnk777 on Monday, April 26, 2004 - 10:24 pm:

So, how come I take her outside to go potty and she doesn't go. It's not that she hasn't been drinking, either. We took her on a long walk, then she had a long drink, then supper and immediately peed in the house. Do I need to sprint her outside the second she stops eating (like almost feed her with the leash on). It happened so fast, that even with three of us in the room, we couldn't have prevented it from happening. I don't know how we can build good habits if she doesn't go when I take her outside. I'm talking staying out there for a half-hour at a time, too. I'm so confused.

After she eats and drinks, take her outside in a quiet part of the yard to pee or poop. Always take her to the same spot. Say one word to her "potty" or another key word for her. Don't forget to give her alot of praise when she does go. Remember a dog only needs simple words such as "good girl", "potty"; etc. with stroking/hugs.
How old is the pup? Some just aren't old enough to train outside.
You may want to keep a section just outside her crate with newspaper which you take her to after she eats and drinks. Once she starts going on the paper, take the paper outside to her spot in the yard where you want her to go. She'll catch on.
I wouldn't expect her to pee on a walk, she is too excited.
Also try to take her out of the door which you want her to go to when she has to pee.
What kind of pup did you get?
Good luck!

Did you say no and tap her on the nose when she peed? Hold her nose near the puddle and say no, forcefully but not loud. When she does go outside, have a treat ready to give her, and praise her with words and strokes.

I have a treat ready in my pocket when I'm outside. She just doesn't go at all! It's 10:45pm and the last time she peed was her accident around 5pm. She is an Australian blue heeler, and she is probably still a puppy, but she is not a new puppy by any means. She stands 18" high at the shoulder.

If you have the crate keep her in it until she does pee outside, if she doesn't pee when you are outside bring her in and put her back in the crate. Like suggested above make sure you say "outside", "potty" or whatever word you use everytime you take her from the crate. Make certain your crate doesn't have too much room in it or she will go in there. Feed her and take her directly outside. Until she got the hang of it I wouldn't leave the water dish out for her to drink from whenever she wants. Good Luck!

Okay, she hadn't peed all day! I got home from work at 6:30pm. Emily had her outside and she didn't go. 15 minutes later, she let loose the floodgates in the basement! Argh! kids said they saw her go behind the furnace and start sniffing! I told them the next time they see her do that, to drop everything and get her outside. They were closer to her at the time. She has been in the crate since then.

How does she get water if I'm not supposed to have water down for her? She won't always drink just because she is taken to a bowl of water. Of course, since she is in the crate at the moment, she really can't drink anyway!

Emily also was outside with her for a long while after school. I know she will eventually get the hang of it. We are all newbies here! LOL! Our previous dog came pre-housebroken since she was 5 when we got her. Of course, it would be nice if she would happen to pee WHEN we take her outside.

DH is taking her for a walk at 1 am or so when he gets home from work. That is when she is pooping. Not a very convenient time! I haven't even seen her poop yet! LOL! At least we aren't getting that in the basement!

When you clean up the pee, take the paper towels outside with her, to her spot. Put them on the ground and say the key word. She obviously learned bad habits before you got her. You have to re-train her which does take more time. :(
It is very frustrating! Be consistant. It takes one time for her to "get it".

Last night, we had her in the basement. Sarah saw her heading for the furnace area, so she quick took her outside. She pooped at that time (although, Gary had been taking her out when he got home from work and she had been pooping then, too.) This morning, I got her up and took her outside and she peed within minutes.

Yesterday, she didn't go all day and 15 minutes after having been outside peed in the basement! Argh. She hasn't been peeing all that much, so we seem to have limited opportunities. I'm glad she peed right off the bat this morning, though.

We just got a mixed breed puppy from the pound and are in the midst of house breaking too. Hang in there Dawn!!!

House breaking is so frustrating...

If you don't keep the water out, you offer it to her pretty frequently and if she does drink take her outside.

It sounds like she is doing a little better.

Maybe she's starting to get the hang of it. We crate trained our dog and it took a few weeks. Our vet said that dogs have a gastorcolic reflex which means they need to poop right after eating. He was right! The peeing was the hard part, but just keep at it ans she will get it!!

No accidents today! She did drink plenty today, too. She pooped after school when Emily took her for a walk and peed only twice, around 6:45 am when I got up and just recently around 8:30pm. So, I guess she can hold it! She was on several walks and was taken just out in the yard several times, so holding it that long seems to be her choice. So, maybe she is getting it.

Emily wanted to ride her scooter tonight, so I walked Jasmine. She heeled nearly the whole way. If she started to wander off, I said "Jasmine Heel" and she was right back by my leg with a loose leash. That is in stark contrast to her predecessor who would pull on a walk until she got tired and then walk by my leg. So, someone must have worked with her on that.

She got to meet the Great Dane who lives 2 streets over! LOL! She is a black-and-white harlequin dane named Zoe. Jasmine just politely sniffed Zoe's nose. Gosh, Great Danes are so big! Sometimes we see Zoe out for walks by our house, too. Also, no barking. I could actually talk to Zoe's owner. Honey would have been barking too much for conversation to happen.

Way to go Jasmine. She's settling in nicely.
