Places opened today...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Places opened today...
By Jackie on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 08:05 pm:

I dont know, maybe its always been this way and Ive just never noticed. But, are there always alot of places opened on Easter? I always thought most places were closed. I know that alot of the restaurants are opened. But in our town, Kmart as well as Walmart were opened. All the Walgreens were opened. And, all fast food was opened, Taco Bell, McDonalds,Burger King.. The video stores were all opened as well as Starbucks. My son and Ijust got back from Super Walmart, and I was in amazement on how many things are opened on a religious holiday.

I went to the commissary yesterday (military grocery store for all you civillians! :) ) and they had a sign up that they would be open today. I told the cashier "You've got to be kidding!" That's just wrong. :(

Walmart never closes! And most fast food places stay open almost all of the time. The friends that came for lunch today...the guy manages a Home Depot and they were open today. That really surprised me though! Sad, very sad to me. :(

The reason they stay open is because they get business. If no one went to those places on Easter, then they would probably close.

Our Walmart was closed, as well as our grocery store. However, Shopko was open from 8-6. I don't know about Kmart. There also were a fair amount of restaurants open.

Walmart closed on Christmas, but was open today. We did our grocery shopping there since the HEB was closed. Most other things that are open on a regular Sunday were open today.

Our Target was closed, but that's all I noticed that was closed. And Target closed on Saturday (yesterday) at 6pm instead of midnight.

Almost everything was closed here today and Friday. I did notice 2 drug stores open, but that's about it.

By Mcrosby57 on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 12:18 am:

All our discount stores: Target, Walmart, Kmart, drug stores, grocery stores, hardware stores, and fast food stores were open. The only thing that closed was the mall. In the mall parking lot was a carnival going full blast. I was surprised the mall was closed.

I think it depends on the area. In Washington state they are lamenting how few people go to church in this state. I guess what was open on Easter was an indication.

WEll we were glad the commisary was open!!! I didn't think it would be but we needed a few things! I felt bad for the people working so i tipped the bagger 10 bucks!! Here in Englad it is very sad that so few go to church. We were there though :)
I don't know what was opened on the British economy though, we didn't even look.

I remember as a kid, no one was open on Sunday! Does that date me?

By Amecmom on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 09:45 am:

I think we all have to remember that not everyone is Christian. Many other religions make up the US. I can't expect every store to be closed on a holiday that is religious and not national. In fact, most stores are not closed on national holidays anyway! We have a consumer-driven economy and people are going to shop whenever they have the chance!
What about people who work hours other than 9 - 5? Perhaps Sunday was the only chance they had to go and shop for their families?
I have no problem with stores being open on religious holidays as long as the people who celebrate those holidays are not forced to work on that day.

Janet, it's only been a few years that anything has been allowed to be open on Sunday in Canada.

By Coopaveryben on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 02:25 pm:

I noticed Saturday when I was out everybody had signs up saying they would be open Easter. I did not and will not go to a store on a Holiday, these people should be given the day off to spend with their families too.
