Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Has anyone...?
By Trina~moderator on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 05:10 pm:

... ever had a mouse living in your vehicle?? We've found evidence of one being in our van several times. First DS found mouse droppings in a cup holder in the 3rd row. DD left her lunch bag in the van last week and something obviously chewed through the raisin box and ate the contents. Last week I was sitting in the van reading a book because I was 15 minutes early for an appointment. I heard something scittering around! Not IN the interior with me but along the sides in the doors. Today I took out all our car seats and boosters and did a thorough vacuum job. Oh my! What a mess! text description Tons of crackers and crumbs underneath DD's car seat. As I was throwing out trash and getting ready to put the car seats and boosters back in I heard scittering again!! HOW do I get this critter OUT?! I certainly don't want it to die within the innards of my van or it will STINK!!

I will have to say, this is the first time I have ever heard of this problem.I know it is terrible, but, I can't help from laughing, that must be some tuff little mouse!

By Marg on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 05:43 pm:

Dh was a pest control tech...

You are not going to like this and it sounds inhumane, I don't like it, but it works...

Poisoning will kill the mouse, but you may not be able to find it and of course we all know it stinks..

We had one living in dh's truck over the winter. There is an abandoned house next door and who knows what lives there, it's part of our neighbors property, but it does attract mice...

You need glue boards or glue traps...

They carry them at Food Lion, brand is Tom Cat, cost $2.99 for 4. Please do not touch this glue traps, they are terribly sticky, and yes the mice run across them and get trapped, it is a slow death. I can not bare it, if I find a mouse in the glue board, I will place the board and mouse in a bag and kill it. I am sorry to be so gross, but it does work, but it is a slow death. There is a smell within the glue to attract the mouse.

I've never heard of an animal living inside, but know many clime up into the engine compartment for warmth and protection. Hmmm...I wonder how it got in the frame. Maybe it ate through a part of the undercarriage? I'm puzzled. I guess you could set a trap somewhere inside and see if you catch anything. Of course, you could always use it as an excuse to upgrade to a newer model .

Good luck! I hope you figure something out!

UGH! Trina, it sounds like Wild Kingdom where you live! LOL

By Pamt on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 07:32 pm:

I had a mouse somehow living in my trunk. I kept finding chewed up bits of paper. Learn from our mistake---DH put a mouse bait poison packet in the trunk. It had little teeth marks and then in a week or so I had a horrible smell emanating from my car. Just think August in southern Louisiana + decaying mouse. 'Nuff said? :( I would recommend a glue trap or a good old fashioned trap with peanute butter for bait. Hope you get the critter soon. My biggest fear was having a mouse run across my foot while driving. I would have had a wreck for sure!

By Palmbchprincess on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 09:20 pm:

I don't know how to kill the mouse, but I will say you should have your van checked out since the mouse may have chewed some wires. That happened with my grandmother's Le Baron. It was parked in the garage, and some little critter had chewed through wires in the dash, ruining the electrical system. (Everything was digital, the speedometer and all) I'm with Pam, I'd freak out if I had a mouse in my truck!! Good luck!!

By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 09:28 pm:

Glue traps. You don't want to use poison, not only because the mouse might die in your car and stink and attract insects - your children ride in this car. While glue traps are not the "kindest" means, they are the safest for your children. When you trap the mouse, and you will, just drop the glue trap in the trash. I recommend a smear of peanut butter as the bait. Just a smear.

By Bobbie on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 10:41 pm:

You don't want it to die in the van trust me...... Been there done that. And yes they climb in and roam around the whole inside of the vehicle like they would a house... Use a glue trap or a regular trap.. Clean the van out really good... And then place the trap in. That way he will be more inclined to go to the trap to feed. AND pray it isn't a mama... And that her babies aren't laying in the walls of the van some where... But get it out of there... And you might want to leave a fresh trap in there on a regular if the kids will be eating in it. Where you live you might have more..

By Jessicac1979 on Sunday, April 11, 2004 - 11:11 pm:

My husband had one living in his car. He set a trap in there and I ended up having to take his car the next morning for work and went out to start it up to warm it before I left for work and then walked to the other side to put my daughters car seat in the back and it was caught on the floor on the passengers side I jumped and thought there is NO way I am taking that bad boy out of here and I am NOT driving to work with it...LOL So I called my neighbor to come get it out before he left for work-It was nasty! lol

By Trina~moderator on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 06:42 am:

Thanks, everyone. I thoroughly cleaned out the van. Now all I have to do is get some glue traps. So far there doesn't appear to be any damage (chewed wiring, etc.) but I want to get the critter(s?) out asap because the potential is there. Argh!

By Colette on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 06:58 am:

I had one make a nest in my air filter. Definately, get a trap and use peanut butter.

By Lauram on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 08:29 am:

It happens to us a lot. Our au pair had one last year who would get on the wind shield and look at her! She didn't handle that one too well! Comes with living in the woods! :) We had a black bear sighting last week a few miles from us. YIKES!

By Momaroze on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 10:06 am:

Our friends had a truck that was sitting for a short period of time. My dh brought it home to mechanically check it over for them. There was a whole family of mice nested in the engine. We removed the nest w/babies and mom but the dad mouse scurried away. I sound like a sap but I felt bad messing up their home. They were so cute all together like that.

By Coopaveryben on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 10:23 am:

I have an abonormal fear of mice. I had a golden Retriever everytime I pulled up she put her front feet in my door after I opened it and "talk" to me and she would always have something in her mouth for me to throw. I guess one night she had a mouse and I didn't know it (I'm glad I didn't reach and grab it thinking it was a toy to throw) she dropped it in my car....I just had a horrible smell and couldn't find it, finally did, I thought I was going to die!

They do have poison that draws them to water and they will leave the car looking for a drink. Have you tried just leaving the door open and maybe it will leave on it's own? When your not in the car you could put a mouse trap in.

By Trina~moderator on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 11:21 am:

Found some glue boards at Wal-Mart this morning. We'll see what happens tonight. I have to leave the house at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow morning, so if I do nab a mouse (or two...) the kids won't be with me. I'm not scared of critters. We live in a rural area and have lots of them visit us often. In fact, our friend Yogi bear should be making an appearance soon. LOL! I just don't want my van to suffer damage or SMELL from little inhabitants! We use our van daily and it's always parked in our garage. Oh, country life! :)

By Melanie on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 11:26 am:

I hope you get the little critter Trina! I always have a fear of this happening. I have had damage from mice chewing the wires in my van. I've also walked into my garage a couple of times only to see a huge rat in there. YUCK!!!! Luckily we haven't had any evidence of one in the car yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen at some point. Like you said, it's the country life! :)

By Amecmom on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 12:54 pm:

Good luck getting the mouse(ice?). I had one living in my car as well. My alarm has not worked right since, so I assume I dined on my wires. My husband cleaned out the car, but found no sign of the critter. We have not seen any more signs of it, so I assume it left of its own accord.
After living in the city all my life, this was really funny!

Trina, my neighbor jokingly told me one time that she was going to write a childrens book called 'What's in Miss Conni's Garage' !! LOL
For awhile every time I talked to her I had another story.

Possom (they are alot bigger when you arent in your car!)

Mice

5 ft Black Snake ( I stepped over it at one point and just flipped out, long story short, dh shook a sleeping bag out and the snake flopped out in front of me and ds... GREAT MOMMY moment I screamed ran out of the garage and LEFT my baby standing by the snake) Dh has never let me forget that. :(

Mean Tom Cats! ugh My poor cat sometimes has to run them off.

Gopher's -- my cat catches them and drags them in.

The other night at dinner our cat ran in the kitty door and dropped a baby rabbit in the floor to show us. So we put it in a box and made sure it was ok and then let it go. Only for the cat to run it down again the next day.

One day I thought one of the boys had shaken feathers out of their vest... oh noooo, after further examination I realized the cat had literally masacared a bird in our dining room. I think our cat has issues.

A squirrel packed nuts in our 4 wheeler last Fall. lol

Never had a mouse in my van tho! Never say never, right. :) Would like to hear how you catch it!

By Bobbie on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 09:45 pm:

Hope you get it. Might take a couple of days. But make sure you keep all the food out of the van. Because he will feed off of that and leave the trap alone. You want that to be the only option.

And I have had my run in with a few criters myself. A mouse in the heating system for one. And when they die they stink..... And you have to have the whole dash taken off to get to the mess. Not cool... Good luck...

By Dawnk777 on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 10:26 pm:

Mouse dying in car almost worse than rabbit dying in dryer vent! Ewwwwwww! My kid threw up in the car and the smell is finally gone. Thankfully, it wasn't the middle of summer. We had mice in our garage once, but never in the vehicles! Eewww! Thankfully that rabbit incident is LONG over with.

By Pamt on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 10:37 pm:

LOL Conni! We had a possum in our basement. We were out of town and had a college student housesitting for us. When we got home she said she had tried to wash the sheets and towels but there was a HUGE rat in our basement. Turned out to be a possum. In TX we had a family of skunks living under our house...a mom and 2 "teenage" skunks. It was winter and every time the heat would turn on and they were under the house it would startle them, they would spray, and the smell would filter through the house. DH blocked off the place where they were getting in and they dug under it. It finally took long steel poles into the ground to keep them out. We lived in a *really* small town (pop.254) and our neighbor would call and say "your skunks are out" and DH would go out and work on his plan to thwart them. Finally worked!! :)

Trina, let us know when you catch a mouse!

By Conni on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - 07:41 am:

That poor girl Pam! lol

Ok skunks are the worst! I'll take a little mouse pest over a skunk anyday.

By Eve on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - 08:54 am:

I hope you catch him soon! I don't do well with creepy crawlies or critters. I would give up driving until DH found the little guy. LOL! I'm glad you are braver than me! Keep us posted!

I've never heard of glue traps! But believe me, I'm writing that one down. :)
