Thinking about taking training to become a Dula

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Thinking about taking training to become a Dula

I just got an email from one of the other KV's and they are offering training at an extremely reduced price to KV's as long as we donate our time to 3 wifes of marines that are in Iraq and will be delivering before they return. Which I think would be great. Is anyone familiar with the program? What do you think?

What's a KV, please? (Obviously I'm not familiar with the program, just curious)

I have never used a doula, but have seen them on TV :)
It looks like a great thing for single women, or women that have husbands out to war etc.
I personally would only want a doula if I were to deliver w/out my DH. I've seen some shows where the doula is present even if the DH is there (by choice of the patient of course)....but I just like it to be me and DH.

I never used a doula myself, but the service of one was offered during my 2nd pregnancy. Since I was going to deliver via c-section I didn't see the point.

If this is something you're interested in - GO FOR IT!

I think these are a great idea and I admire you for wanting to try it. :)

I have tons of friends who are Doulas (or training to be doulas).....I think it is awesome and they all seem to love doing it.

A lot of them want to become midwives in the future-so this is a good stepping stone.

A Doula can be great at a birth because they can do all the 'dirty work' and leave dh to really be there emotionally.I will probably have a doula at my homebirth just because dh gets so emotional that he doesn't do much good for me. A Doula can be a helpful support to the father as well as the mother.

GO for it!!!

A KV is a Key Volunteer. I volunteer in my husbands unit to help coordinate events, and pass word to the other wives when their husbands are deployed (phone tree). We show the new wives around and help make sure they get settled in and feel at home. Or what ever other tasks that need to be done that the unit asks for. We have a really good group here and had a really good one in Okinawa but I never once heard from my KV at Pendleton. I signed up to help make a difference for the new wives. I remember when we first got married, dh didn't have any time to help me with anything and I just got thrown in and had to learn as I went. It was really hard, I didn't know who to call for what. The KV gives referals to differnt places for different things and helps to get the ball rolling.
