Growing out bangs

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: Growing out bangs
By Cat on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 12:02 pm:

For the first time in my life I've decided to grow my bangs out. They're about to the tip of my nose now and are starting to really bug me! lol I part my hair on the side so that side is about long enough to tuck behind my ear and it doesn't bug me too much. The other side is what's getting to me! Any advise? I'm not even sure I'll like them once they're grown out, but if I don't I'll just cut them. I just want to see. My mom always kept my hair short with bangs because it was easier (for her or me??? :) ). I figure another couple months and they'll be long enough to blend into my layers (I have longs layers cut in--the shortest being just below my chin). ARGH!!! Okay. I feel better now. Thanx for letting me vent a bit. :) (dh just doesn't understand! lol)

That's a feat I have never tried to achieve. I think I'd look AWFUL without bangs, so I've never tried to grow them. I am growing out layers though. Grrrr... It takes forever!

Have you played with hair combs, clips, barrettes, head bands, etc. to see if anything would help with that annoying in-between stage?

Good luck!

I tried growing out my bangs. (I am growing out my old cut.) It lasted until my bangs were to the top of my bottom lip...I'm still growing out the old cut, but got my hair trimmed a couple of weeks ago and asked them to give me bangs. You know what? I can see again! LOL

I think I was meant to have bangs.

By Eve on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 12:58 pm:

I feel your pain. Just, whatever you do, do NO cut them. If you give in, you'll just be starting all over again. Get a cute clip or barrette and just keep it out of your face. You can also spray a little hairspray into your fingers and smooth it over to the side. Or else try a large round velcro roller when you are blow drying your hair. When it's almost dry, put the roller in and spray with some sort of hairpsray and put the blow dryer on it. Leave it in for about 10 mintues, then remove. It should give your bangs a little lift from the root and it will help A LOT!

It's taken me a whole year to grow the layers out in my hair after a bad hair cut. Just don't give in and you'll be so glad!! Good luck! :)

I am growing out mine too, I didnt dare to go bangless but dh convinced me to try it and I am getting tons of compliments on it. Mine are mid-nose length now.

Cat, I did this 2 years ago. The process was torture, but I'm glad I did it. Go to a hairstylist and get an allover trim and tell him/her that you are growing out your bangs. They will be able to cut in some long layers to help your bangs blend in and show you how to use some styling products to hold your bangs in place during the growing out process. I never like sticky or crunchy hair, but they used different stuff that didn't fell icky to keep my hair back until it grew out longer. Hang in there!!

I love having my bangs grown out. I haven't had bangs for a LONG time.
Wal-mart has clear bobby pins that you could use to keep your bangs out of your face. They are hardly noticeable.
Otherwise, like Eve mentioned, find a cute clip to clip them back. Anything goes....especially in springtime! Just wear a flower clip and you'll be right in style :)

Thanx for all the great suggestions! I'm not at the point yet that I'm ready to get the scissors, it's just annoying. I'll try and get somewhere this weekend and find some clips or something. I have tons of scrunchies and bigger barrettes. Nothing small, though. Maybe I'll try and curl them under a little. I just had my hair cut this weekend and told the girl I was growing them out so she didn't touch them. Maybe next time they'll be long enough to blend in. I still like being able to pull the rest back and any shorter on the side and I wouldn't be able to. Like I said, this is the first time I've ever done this, so who knows how it'll look! I might end up hating it! lol I think my bangs are rebelling. They've always been there and now they're confused! lol Thanx again for the suggestions and listening to me rant.

I tried to let mine grow out last summer but I couldn't do it. They drove me bananas. My ten year old dd is trying to grow hers out, again, and she is at the breaking point, too! She also parts her hair on the side and is getting frustrated by the opposite side LOL

By Coopaveryben on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 02:22 pm:

My Hair is all one length, I can't stand bangs. Every now and then I will decide to cut them and I just hate them sitting there on my forhead it drives me crazy. I love being able to pull all my hair out of my face when I want to. Just hang in there they will pass the annoying point soon, it usually only last a few weeks.

By Jodie on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 02:33 pm:

I have looong hair , one length. I had bangs for a few years and then 2 years ago decided to grow them out. Still growing out ! LOL! Although they're almost grown out but took me a good 2 years.Goodluck with yours.

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 02:45 pm:

I still have bangs and doubt I have the patience to grow out bangs, so status quo for me. My kids have both grown out their bangs, so I went through it with them. They used barrettes, clips, and head bands to keep their hair out of their face in the LONG time it takes them to fit in a pony tail!

For a different look you can also get a simple tortoiuse shell/black/whatever color, headband. Sometimes a piece of your bangs will fall out and it looks cute.

I am a ballcap wearer too! :) You can pull all the bangs back under the hat.

I havent had bangs since about 1990!!! I havent missed them a bit. :)

Have fun with your new look!

Are head band any different than when I was a kid? They were SO uncomfortable then! lol I hope they've changed. :)

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 06:07 pm:

I think they are sometimes still uncomfortable. There are knit ones, though, that would be softer, although, sometimes those can too tight.

By Cat on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 06:12 pm:

I have a couple knit ones, but they rub the tops of my ears. We'll see what Wally World has. :)

By Coopaveryben on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 09:24 pm:

When I am at home I use a bandana sometime, I wouldn't wear it outside my front door but it helps keep everything off your face while you are cleaning.

By Mommyduncan on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 11:31 pm:

I did this year, it is so frustrating! In June, I got my hair cut short all over and we cut up to my bangs, where they just blended in, I didn't have bangs anymore, I had hair! It was wonderful. Now, I am letting my hair grow out and it's all the same lenght. I'm loving it, of course, on these warm days, I'm really thinking of getting it cut again!.

I try every few months to grow mine out and I can't get past the *almost to the end of your nose* stage.

By Monetlesa on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 11:27 pm:

My bangs were finally growing out and I just got them cut again and hate them. I had too though-- the ends were pretty bad due to a bad highlighting job last year still in the process of growing out (but almost gone). I hated to get them cut but I also hated the ends.

My hair is fine and curly and to make matters worse, the ends of the bangs are curling UP right now--talk about stupid looking. Any ideas for what I can do with them for now?

I don't want to use any heat appliances on them because it will just make it more prone to breakage than it already is and then I'll have to keep getting them cut and they'll never grow out---and my hair grows slow.
Thanks!

By Bobbie on Monday, April 12, 2004 - 11:47 pm:

what about a leave in conditioner? It would probably weigh the hair down enough to keep it from curling up and it would also be good for the damage.

By Momaroze on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 - 10:18 am:

Hair gel, hair putty, I hear they even have hair wax now! Your hair probably looks cute. We are too hard on ourselves!
