First time electronic tax filing - what a joy!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive April 2004: First time electronic tax filing - what a joy!

I read what several here had posted about electronic tax filing and decided to do it this year. I bought TurboTax (and, because I wanted to update my Quicken, bought that too, getting a rebate for the cost of the Turbotax as part of the deal). I did the electronic filing, for which Turbotax charges $14.95 BUT gives you a $14.95 rebate. I filed on March 9, got my refund in my bank account March 19th, and got my Turbotax rebate and electronic filing rebate from Turbotax today. I am much more impressed than I thought I would be.

text description We've been doing it this way for a few years now! Very cool, isn't it?!

It's scary the first time isn't it Ginny;)

The first year our office did it, it was all scewed up, partially because of the IRS! It's come a long way.

I am a big fan of Turbo tax---have used it for years. You do not have to buy the program you can just go to their website to do it.

Thanks, Yvonne. I'll remember that next year. But this year I bought it because of the tie-in with Quicken for the rebate and I did want to have a newer version of Quicken. (Though I'm not sure why, now, as I really don't use or like the many bells and whistles it has. Seems a lot of it is directed to people who do financial business on line, and I don't as a general rule, except for a few purchases.)

Can you file the long form with Turbo Tax or just the EZ?

We live in a high tax state (New York) and need to file the long form for the state tax deduction.

By Yjja123 on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - 11:52 am:

Yes you can do long form. That is what we file.

YOu can do the long form and all those other silly forms are available too. It is very nice. Ohio has quite a bit of taxes and it was a real time saver to do it that way!

John, I do the long form, with deductions for real estate taxes and charitable giving. I don't have to do it, but I believe Turbotax also has the additional schedules for business expenses and profits, capital gains, and so on. You can also get a separate version (or, I believe, do it on line for a fee) for various state tax filings.

We used turbo tax several times and loved it! This past year we had so many things go on that we have worked with an accountant and he did them this year. We have to pay!! Argh!!

Mildly funny - I got my tax rebate about 8-10 days after e-filing (early last week), and got my rebate from Intuit for the e-filing fee, plus my rebate for buying TurboTax and Quicken together, last Friday.

Tonight I received an email from Intuit telling me that my rebate for e-filing had been approved and I should receive it in 30 days or less - but I've already received it.

I emailed back suggesting their rebate system is working more efficiently than their rebate notification system.
