Flower Pot Garden

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: Flower Pot Garden
By Coopaveryben on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 06:09 pm:

Has anyone ever planted a garden using pots?

I was wanting to do this this year because I just don't have the energy/patience to keep up an entire garden, I know my 1 year old will stomp on everything, the dog, and the neighbors.

I have an old round wash basin I was going to use for tomatoes. But what else can I plant in pots? How deep do they need to be?

You mean like container gardening? For flowers? I have tons of containers on my patio. It's the only place I get to have full sun plants, all my flower beds are shaded. I have found that having plants of different heights, but same sun/water needs make for pretty containers..especially in a big container. In smaller containers I tend to have a grouping of the same colors looks nice.
I have only grown tomatoes and radishes in containers as far as the veggies go.

You can plant just about anything in pots, wooden boxes, buckets whatever. I thought of doing that as well (less weeds to pick). Your round wash basin will work great for tomatoes, just don't forget about drainage. Onions, bush beans, lettuce, spinach, radishes work well. I've tried zuchinni in a large bucket but didn't work out so well for me. Veg's like radishes, lettuce, green onions, spinach don't require alot of depth. It's a great idea.

You can plant anything in pots, just remember though, that they will need more watering than a regular garden. If you do a search for Container Gardening, you'll get a lot more info.

One tip I learned was to put broken up concrete or rocks in the bottom of the container to help promote drainage.

Thank you! I think I will try bush beans and radishes too.

I didn't think of the rocks, that is a great idea.

If you have done this in the past did it yeild a lot of vegetables? I like to freeze and put them up so that I have them all year and I wasn't sure if I would be able to get enough from pots.

Cucumbers probably wouldn't work either??? has anybody tried them?

Oh my gosh Fiona what a great website. Just key in "square foot gardening" and it will bring you right there! He makes it super easy to order anything unlike alot of the other website I've encountered. I get so fed up I just don't bother. He gives you alot of option to chose for payment etc...I hate putting my credit card# over the internet? Alot of people do it but I guess it gets easier once you've done it a few times. I would like to order some heritage seeds too but cannot find a good canadian/American website that I can order from easily? Awesome website thanks.

I never thought of ordering anything from there. I just thought it was so cool that he would put all of his information on the website so that you didn't have to order his book if you didn't want. I hate it when I feel like people are trying to sell me something when I go somewhere for information. That website is cool because you can basically use stuff from around the house-you don't really have to buy or order special stuff. What did you order from him?

I think he sounds like such a cool person eh? And for the first time I wasn't daunted by the thought of gardening-although I guess I will pass this year since I will have a newborn around the middle of June!

Nice time of year to have a baby Fiona. Do you know B or Girl? I never did order anything but I thought exactly what you did. No pressure to buy anything. You know that is when I would usually buy from that person/co. I hate pressure. Anyways I didn't spend much time at that site but will later. I am looking for a Canadian site that sells yard collectible or whatever to spruce up my yard???Lots of really neat stuff on the American sites (Marg told me about) but I cannot find any Canadian websites that sell reasonable stuff. Maybe e'bay I guess? It's difficult to shop with an infant, at least mine. All my kids are big time criers!!!! They all hated shopping with me too!LOL

Don't know if it is a boy or girl....dh wants it to be a surprise. He told me yesterday that if it is a girl he wants the middle name to be 'Lullabye"....I almost killed myself laughing!! If it is a girl, the first name will be Phaedra(named after my sister)....Ds is named after my favourite cousin(Eliah)....I guess we are not good at thinking up our own names(especially dh LOL).....
