Baby's Heartbeat as Predictor of a Boy or Girl

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: Baby's Heartbeat as Predictor of a Boy or Girl
By Amecmom on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 05:32 pm:

I had pre-natal visit today and the midwife did a doppler to check the baby's heartbeat. It was in the faster range (150's). She said, "That's a girl heartbeat". It is true that when I was expecting my son, his hearbeat was lower. I'm curious how accurate a prediction of the baby's sex the heartrate is. Have any of you had the experience where the heartrate was slow and it was really a girl and not a boy? I'd love to find out.

Hi, my ds heartbeat never got above 136 and everyone kept saying ooh it's a boy, and sure enough it was!!

By Tyaustinsma on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 06:11 pm:

My ds's both were around the 150's and they are all boy, I really believe that is just not accurate, my sister's baby was low 130 and they kept saying boy, yet she had a girl!

By Amecmom on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 06:16 pm:

I just did a lot or research on the net and found that it's supposedly not accurate, but it's fun to see how close it is anyway ...

By Pamt on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 06:33 pm:

My OB-GYN said that some research with midwives said it is not foolproof, but surprisingly accurate. I think it relates more to the heartbeat near the end of the pregnancy though. I have 2 boys...both heartbeats in the 140s.

My ds heartbeat was 150 most often and my doctor was thinking my last would be a girl. Now I have my three son's. It's just a wise folktale.

I don't remember the number that my dd was (it was over 9 years ago now!!) but I do recall them telling me it was in the high range and people telling me that meant a girl!! It was right in my case!!

They were wrong with both of my kids............

By Coopaveryben on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 09:49 pm:

My DS's were always in the high 150's.

By Bobbie on Wednesday, March 24, 2004 - 10:24 pm:

Yeah it is not always the case. Just like as adults we have a base line for it but the ranges actually vary. Kind of like the body temp. is supposed to be 98.6. this is not true with everyone. Some people run lower and some run higher. My ds body temp runs 95.4 when he is not sick as an example. They are just assumptions or as I said a base line..

I think my kids both had heartrates in the 140's to 150's and were both girls. It's hard to remember from 12 and 14 years ago, though. What killed me more were all the people who predicted my first DAUGHTER was a boy just because of how my body was shaped while I was pregnant. They were all WRONG!

Of course, I was wrong, too. First dd was a very active fetus. She moved around ALL the time! I thought she was going to be a boy, too! My girlfriend who was pregnant the same time I was had a very quiet fetus. She ended up with a boy! LOL!

My sons and my daughter both had heartrates in the mid 140's. So it was right with my boys but not my girl.

By Babysitbarb on Thursday, March 25, 2004 - 09:30 am:

Both of my DD's were 140-150. People also say they can tell what your having by the way you carry them when your pregnant and that's not true. I carried the first one very high and the second one very low. They all thought she was a boy even up until I delivered her. Boy, were we all shocked.

My daughter's was always in the 150's. It could be a GIRL:):):)

I was supposed to be a boy, according to my heartbeat--but nope! My parents got baby Andrea instead of "Jason". LOL, I guess they just got their son Jason 22 years later, because I married a Jason!

Thanks guys, it was fun to see how many hear rates were on the button, and how many were off the mark. I think predicting the baby's sex is half the fun of being pregnant. According to the Chinese gender prediction chart and the baby's heart rate, it should be a girl. We'll find out next month (I think) when I have another ultrasound.

I have three girls and a boy. Every doctor we had kept telling me my girls would be a boy. I don't know, I think that is what they "think" parents want to hear. For some reason, I don't know...
When we had our ds's ultrasound and they said he was a boy, I had them circle the penis on the ultrasound picture and they wrote penis right next to it! LOL. Truly I didin't believe he would be a boy until he was finally born!!
John Stossel, from one of the news shows, proved that it was a myth that when you carry a baby differently ie: all in front or all around, it means you are carrying a certain gender.
It is most fun when you are pregnant to wonder what gender you are carrying.
Did most moms here pick out both a girl name and a boy name? I know we did.
