GMAC: Risk of Identity Theft

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: GMAC: Risk of Identity Theft

I am just letting those of you that have a car financed with GMAC or have insurance with GMAC know that you need to make sure you will not be affected by a recent theft of personal information. I received a letter in the mail today from GMAC saying that two of their computers were stolen from a regional office that had personal information on me and many, many others including birth dates and social security numbers. I have been instructed to place a security alert on my credit file with the major credit companies. You may want to check with GMAC to see if you are also at risk of potential identity theft and take the necessary precautions.

I have no idea, all I know is that they sent me a letter saying personal information of mine and others was on one of the two computers that were stolen. I would call just to check. It's scary!

My nephew is dealing with this now. He is 18. He went in to get his drivers license. They live in a big city and up until this year he has had no need for a drivers license as everything is with in walking distance or a small bus fare away. He went in to get his license and someone had assumed his identity to get a license in another state and he has a warrant for his arrest and a punch of unpaid tickets. The boy has never left the state of Ohio for get going to that other state. He had to get documentation from the school he attended stating he was here on the dates he was supposed to have been arrested. He had to get papers from his employer stating he was at work on two of the occasions. He also had to go to a doctor and have a physical done so that he could submit his statistics. And he had to send a picture of himself to try to get the stuff off of his records so that he can get a license. And no one is working with him to clear it up. They have a bunch of hoops he has to hurry up and jump through so that he can wait for the next command. Pretty upsetting for him. Hope you all can get things taken care of before something happens.
