Anyone wear a Bite Splint ?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: Anyone wear a Bite Splint ?
By Sue3 on Friday, March 12, 2004 - 09:29 pm:

I went to my Dentist this week and got one.I have to wear it every night because I grind my teeth and it is making them chip and wear down.
I tried it last night for the first time and it was hard to get used to.I really don`t like it.
Just wondering if any other members wear them ?
and how long it take`s to get used to it.
TIA ,Sue

I have them and have worn them in the past. Are yours hard or soft? I grind my teeth also at night, so my dentist tells me, but I never noticed any relief with the splints. I also have TMJ, do you?

Be careful if the dentist or orthodontist wants to set up the plan of you wearing the splints and periodically going back to the see them for the splints to be shaven down in the area where you grind. This has cost me mega bucks! With no relief.
When I was in my middle 20's I participated in a study for Tufts University, in Boston, MA for my TMJ.
If you have TMJ, I will ellaborate...
if not, then try to wear the appliance but practice breathing through your nose. That will help with the gagging reflex. :)

Hi Annie , Thanks for responding to my post.First of all what is a TMJ ?
Mine are hard.I have to soften it first in warm water for it to fit properly on my teeth.
I only have one that fits on my upper teeth.
Yes, yesterday I was in ther for 45 min.and they kept grinding it down and said I may have to
come back in 2 weeks or so to get it ajusted again.
It feels weird and it is going to take some getting used to.
I hope that they don`t charge me each time I go in ! Sheesh ! the bite split itself cost a small fortune.
My teeth are horrible.I have invested alot of $$$ in them

TMJ is an acrynom for templar mandibular joint. The term TMJ refers to a popping or cracking in the jaw joint. (the term has since been renamed per acrynom as TMD, templar mandibular dysfucntion.) I may be spelling it wrong, but it is late for me. :)
Your splint is different than mine. I never had to wet it before using it.
Dentistry and Orthodontistry has changed so much in the past 7 years. Question your dr, ask questions, do research.
Hope this helps.

No I don`t have TMJ.Your right Dentistry and Orthodonistry has changed ...alot !
So does it take awhile to get used to the splits ?
It definatly has changed my night time routine.
If it saves my teeth it`s worth it.
He said with the rate I was going and if I didn`t get a splint I would have had to get crown`s on all my bottom teeth because they were getting chipped so bad.
Well ,thanks for the info Annie \clipart {happy}.
I have to go to bed.
