Disgusting cat question

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: Disgusting cat question
By Colette on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

Do over the counter worm medicines work well? I think I am going to vomit, my youngest cat just flounced by with her tail in the air with a little white worm on her butt. Help! Dh is picking up deworming medicine on his way home.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 05:54 pm:

The only time our cats ever had those we got a pill for them from the vet and it worked wonders. And I know JUST how you feel.......it made me want to vomit too.

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 05:56 pm:

Good question. Other than routine deworming of kittens at the vet I've never had to deal with worms. Come to think of it, I think my Mom's cats repeatedly got them until she took them to the vet for treatment. Do your cats go outside? They tend to get them from eating wild critters (mice, birds,...).

By Happynerdmom on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 05:57 pm:

Uh-Oh... don't let Kate read this post! There goes the possibility of her getting a cat! LOL

By Colette on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 06:08 pm:

Yes, they go out and clear my yard of rodents on a reg. basis. I get to play guess the body part by my back door. I'll take them to the vet but I want to use something right now - like lysol. I never want to see that again.

How do you give a cat a pill?

By Trina~moderator on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 06:14 pm:

MUCH easier said than done!
Pilling a Cat

A funny... text description
How to Pill a Cat
Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on each side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat gently in left arm and repeat process.
Retrieve cat from bedroom, pick up and throw soggy pill away.
Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for count of ten.
Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse in from garden.
Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into cat's mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.
Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill out of foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep up shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set on one side for gluing later.
Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with a pencil and blow into drinking straw.
Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.
Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door just enough so that head is showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with plastic band.
Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Throw tee-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.
Ring fire department to retrieve cat from tree across road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.
Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by a large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.
Get spouse to drive you to emergency room. Sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearms and removes pill from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home and order new dining table.
Arrange for SPCA to collect cat and ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

lol Trina. I am banning them to the basement until I can get to the vet.

By Sue3 on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 06:38 pm:

lol Trina! Yes, happynerdmom I thought the same as you.
When I had to worm our cats I bought an over the counter cat wormer from walmart.
They were in capsules so I could take them apart and inside was the medicine in a powder form ,
so I mixed it with about a 1/4 cup of canned cat food (that way I knew that they would eat it all)
It worked !
Good luck.

By Kate on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 06:44 pm:

Yikes. Guppies it is!

Good luck with your kitty. :)

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 06:46 pm:

Our vet told us they got them from biting fleas, that the fleas carried the worms........make any sense??

By Boxzgrl on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 07:19 pm:

Depends on the worm. If it is a tapeworm (from fleas) then most likely the vet is the only solution. The biggest problem is identifying the worm. Different meds kill certain types of worms, there is no "kill all in one" method.

If your kitty is a regular at the vet you may even be able to just bring a "sample" in for the vet to see which worm your kitty has.

Good Luck!!

FYI- It seems as if the tapeworm is the most common type of worm. Even if you dont necessarily see any fleas, it only takes one tiny flea for your kitty to swallow. Then begins the process....

By Cat on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 08:21 pm:

Ranks right up there with the "cling-ons" huh!?! rofl :)

yeah, well, dh brought home mussels and I wasn't to hungry for them.

By Luvn29 on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 09:28 pm:

I've dewormed dogs and cats with the liquid worming med from Wal-mart. It really worked. Never had to get anything from the vet.

Good luck!!! It really is disgusting, but that's not nearly as disgusting as finding out a puppy has worms...I'll spare all details! hehe! :)

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, March 9, 2004 - 10:38 pm:

Colette, I emailed you in response to yours. My son says definitely the vet. The over the counter stuff may work and may be safe for most cats, but you'd feel terrible if something went wrong.

This is another reason I am a firm believer that cats should not go outside.

By Feona on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 06:56 am:

I got a street cat that I adopted. He stayed in the bathroom untill the worms were out. Alot of worms.

By Colette on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 07:54 am:

Thanks everyone. It's definately not a tapeworm. It has to be a roundworm from eating rodents (and frogs, and bugs, and whatever dares to venture into my yard - except birds). I know they dont have fleas and I do the frontline treatments for fleas and ticks on a reg. basis. They are both mad at me for making them stay in the basement.

By Janet on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 09:38 am:

Trina...too funny! LOL Colette, get thee to a vet! Make sure it's done right! (blech)

By Kaye on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 - 09:50 am:

My daughter had pinworms....very similar experience. UGH!
