Does anyone have a penpal in another country?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive March 2004: Does anyone have a penpal in another country?
By Marg on Tuesday, March 2, 2004 - 02:00 pm:

Dh would like to have a penpal from Ireland (he wants to go there someday). I was thinking the same thing about getting a penpal.

Any thoughts.

I've had a couple of e-mail penpals from other countries. I found them on a penpal message board. One was from England and one from Australia. I don't remember the site. We e-mailed back and forth for awhile and then it just kind of fizzled out. We didn't really have much in common and I don't mean to be rude, but they didn't seem very bright. They didn't know much about their countries so that part of it was kind of boring for me.
I think it sounds like a fun idea. Especially if your DH wants to got here someday.

Funny you mention that. I too am considering getting a penpal. I have thought of it often....only problem is how do you know who you are really connecting up with? I don't know anything about email penpals. I should look into it.

I've had a pen pal from Australia for 31 years! We've never actually met, never talked on the phone, but our letters have been pretty regular until the dreaded e-mail came into our lives. Believe it or not, I hardly ever hear from her anymore, and when I do, it's nothing like the letters used to be. Too convenient, maybe... go figure. But our lives are also a lot busier than they were. Anyway...yes! Get a pen pal! :)

So how do you go about getting a pen pal? Janet, how did you "meet" your pen pal?

We were wondering the same thing and it is also scary at times to just contact anyone. We really know nothing about it, but came across a Christian penpal website. Has anyone ever dealt with these?

We also get "Focus on the Family" and saw that their is a magazine for young girls with penpals (I believe just from the United States) this is set up through their organization.

Does anyone's children have penpals? We thought this would be nice for our oldest daughter age 11.

I have a penpal in Australia, and we've been writing for several years. We used to chat a lot on the computer, but with the time difference, it's very difficult. Now we write snail mail a couple of times a year. Our daughters write, as well. I met her through the snail mail list at Mommytimes, and that board no longer exists. I'm sure other boards have them, too.
My kids all have pen pals, but they aren't very consistent. We met them all through a homeschooling list. I'm not great at reminding them to do it, and they don't often think of it on their own.

Oh gosh...let me think! LOL I used to be in Camp Fire Girls and I think it was through that organization. I think I paid a dollar for being matched up with her. I had two others (one from Scotland and one from Switzerland), but they didn't "stick" like this one did. My dd is in 4-H, and she's gotten some addresses and written letters, but not received any replies. :( I've seen pen pal lists in New Moon magazine (for girls) and I think maybe American Girl, but I'm not sure. I don't have any ideas for grown-up girls! LOL

I have met a great friend from India through an online site. All I was asking for was a pen pal since I was single but involved (we've been married for two years---not my pen pal). He's married and we've been friends for about three years.

He is still learning english so sometimes he doesn't seem so bright with his broken sentences and I forget to spell out contraction words. He doesn't understand DOESN'T, but can when I spell it DOES NOT. It takes him a long time to read/understand my emails when I forget.

Having a pen pal from another country is great! You can learn the things that they have in their country and they are excited to know what the United States is like.

Also he is one of the two online friends that I can tell anything to and he will let me know where I went wrong and I appreciate him for it.

I hope your dh finds a pen pal from Italy so he will know what to expect when he does goes there.
