I need some guidance

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: I need some guidance

As most of you know I started this new job at the commissary. I really enjoy the cake decorating, however I don't do as much cake decorating as I do cleaning up everyone elses mess. They have been scheduling me to close which puts me leaving the house 1hr after ds gets home from school. I am not getting home until atleast 9:30 everynight. So I only get to see ds an hour a day. It is really showing in his behavior. Today we caught him drawing on the seat of my car with lip liner and he tried to blame it on dd. He is starting to not do as well with his school work. Dd has been acting up as well. Anytime I tell her anything she screams no and runs off to her room crying. Dh has been away at a school for 7 weeks and just returned home today. He will go to the field starting next week for 5 weeks and who knows what will happen after that. The money is nice and again I really enoy the cake decorating but is it worth it. I have already told the manager that I can not keep working this late and she says that they are trying to hire someone else so that I am not closing all the time. Well it has been 2 weeks, they have applications and they aren't really doing anything with them. I haven't even been working long enought for us to get used to the money so if its gone we wouldn't even notice. If I quit, what do I say when I go in there?

I've seen the pictures of your cakes, and they are good!

I know a couple of women in our area that sell cakes from their homes for birthdays, etc.. These cakes are just as much as stores cakes, but look a lot better and taste a lot better.

Have you ever thought of this? I know it might not be as much money right away, etc.

Good luck:)

I agree with Marg, or go to them and explain that this schedule is not working at all, if they tell you they are looking ask them to put someone else on that shift until they find that new person. If they don't then give your notice, especially if you aren't in dire need of the money, your kids need to be first. The decorating cakes at home is a great idea, i know a few people who do things like that. Its good money once you get going. If your base has a weekly newpaper you can advertise in it andi ts pretty cheap.

I agree with others. Put your family needs first (sounds like you are already leaning in that direction). Doing the cakes from home is a fantastic idea. If you could advertise in a local paper, I would think you could get some great responses. I know there are certain things you must do when working with food and laws for that, but maybe you could go to there house and prepare the cake the day before they need it? That way you are only doing a service and not selling the food? I would think tons of moms would jump at the chance to have a pretty cake for birthday parties and such.

After talking with my husband and deciding that we can really live without the money, I am going in to let them know that it just not working out at home with me working this late. That I will close today and tomorrow since it is already on the schedule but efective immediatly I am giving my two week notice and I will not be able to work evenings to finish up my two weeks. My kids DO come first. I just got a phone call while I was writing this from a concerned friend. She said that she tried to talk to ds this moring and he was very withdrawn and moody. dh will be home around lunch time so we are going to take ds Burger King and eat with him before I go to work. I'll let you know how today goes at work....Thank You all for your help. Oh ya and dh said I can still get the airbrush gun if I quit, and that will help make beautiful cakes if I do sell them out of my house.

GOOD FOR YOU! It sounds like a better door is opening rather than a door closing! :)

By Bea on Friday, February 27, 2004 - 05:23 pm:

Do you have a Baskin Robbins or Carvel store near you? They hire cake decorators also, and may offer better wages and hours.

By Insaneusmcwife on Friday, February 27, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

We don't have any of those stores near us and its not really the money. Its more of a hobby that started to consume my life when I started this job. I gave notice and and they were very understanding and said that they would get some one in ASAP and if this person starts before my 2 weeks is up I won't have to finish the 2 weeks. They also said that After school gets out or when ever down the road I would like that I can always come back if they have an opening and I will be priority over the other applicants since I have already worked there.
