To drink or not to drink...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: To drink or not to drink...

I almost feel silly to ask the question but my dh (who is a very smart man) insists that coffee does NOT dehydrate (the caffeine in coffee I should say)as once was thought. I disagree.....what do you ladies and gentlemen think. Of course he is a coffeeholic and will defend "coffee" till the end!LOL I to now am drinking more than ever (since baby was born) What is your opionion? Thanks

By Jackie on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 - 12:29 pm:

Its not the coffee itself its the caffeine in the coffee that is dehydrating.

Yes, I know it's the caffeine in the coffee....It's just seems to be the beverage of choice around here lately....

I live on Coke and coffee, and believe me it will dehydrate. I'll start getting a funny taste in my mouth and muscle spasms if I don't drink enough water along with my liquid caffine diet. :) But like your DH, I'm addicted, and am starting to wean off it. I get some killer headaches if I stop cold turkey. (I'm sitting with coffee in front of my as I type this... oops!!)

By Momaroze on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 - 01:53 pm:

LOL. Yeah, I better cut down before it is too late. Maybe decaffinated coffee will be a good choice in between the other.:) Bye.

Actually, I have a coffee substitue called INKA. I used to use 1/2tsp Inka plus 1/2 tsp reg. coffee. I think I will go back to doing that.

Hubby and I managed to start drinking caffeine-free Diet Coke. Although, we still drink the caffeinated Diet Coke if we are in a restaurant, we hardly ever buy the caffeinated stuff for here at home. If a restaurant has a caffeine-free option, I usually pick that instead. It is nice not to get caffeine headaches anymore! Even though there is less caffeine in soda, I apparently drank enough that I would get a headache if I didn't get my fix!

When you make your coffee, use half reg and have decaf.

I use the light coffee. No need to mix it its already half the caffeine and taste the same as regular!

I found a good online source for coffee and caffeine. Coffee is really good for you. Has alot of antioxidant power! Your 45% less likely to suffer from gall stones drinking just 2-3 cups/day, drink 4 cups and drop your risk of colon cancer, and so on. Also the American college of Nutrition confirms caffeine dosen't dehydrate healthy people? Good news for people that love coffee! I'm going back to read more.

What is the web site? Also leaches calcium out of your bones.

Might still be dehydrating.

I love coffee though...
