Low Amniotic Fluid at 23 weeks

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: Low Amniotic Fluid at 23 weeks
By Marsha on Monday, February 9, 2004 - 06:54 pm:

Today I had an u/s and the dr said that my amnio fluid was lower than normal and not what he had thought it would have shown.....
Are any of you familiar with this?
Needless to say I have looked online all day and just made my mind go a thousand ways.
He said that I needed to stay off my feet and get lots of rest and they will do another check on the 17th.
If you have any info, please let me know!

No i have never heard of that happening, did he give you any indication of why their is a low amount of fluid? just do what he says and stay off your feet.Think positive thoughs, let us know what he says on the 17th

I agree with MRSE - stay off your feet and follow all the doctor's advice.

Did the doctor tell you to drink a lot of water everyday too?
With my 3rd pregnancy, the amniotic fluid was on the low/normal side when I was at that stage of pregnancy. I was given strict orders to drink a gallon of water a day, not lift anything over 10 pounds and stay off my feet as much as possible. I wasn't even allowed to carry the laundry basket up and down the stairs. I remember waiting for an anxious week to go back and have it re-checked. I also remember reading about low fluid and fearing the worst. In my case, by the time I went back, I had brought my fluid level back up to within average levels. I had to maintain the water intake and no lifting for the duration of the pregnancy, but that was just a precaution. I did have to go back every 2 weeks for fluid checks until he was born, but I never had a problem again and my son was born healthy. I know how agnonizing it is waiting to get re-checked, but do follow the doctor's orders and increase your water consumption. It won't do you any good to search on what it *could* mean - I've been there and remember all the thoughts that went through my head - because it may not be anything more than what I went through. (((hugs)))
Let us know when you go back.

My sister had this with both of her kids and had to do what Sunny in the last post wrote, she too was able to increase her amniotic levels and both her children are fine. SO drink lots of water and stay of those feet!

Hang in there...

I had low levels with my second son, but I was also past my due date when the levels decreased, so my doctor induced. My baby was fine. Just drink lots of water and put your feet up...hang in there.

My coworker had that with her DS. She had to stop working the last couple months of her pregnancy. Mom and baby were both fine though!

I had the same condition you described. The medical term is "oligohydramnios". I went crazy reading about all the what-ifs, too, but all turned out well. I think that I had it from a combination of having a pretty bad sinus cold at the time of u/s and not drinking as much water as I should have been. When I went back for rechecks, levels looked good. Some women have the opposite problem and have too MUCH amniotic fluid. In my 38th week, I tested postive for Group B strep, which it turns out is really common, but of course went nutty reading up on that as well! Now, my baby is 9 m/o and healthy as can be and labor and delivery went fine. So, take care of yourself, rest and drink lots of water! Good luck!

My SIL had that as well. Ditto what everyone else above said. Drinking lots of water seems to be the key ... and close monitoring. Her ds is now 3 months old and couldn't be healthier. I know it's nearly impossible not to worry but when you find yourself drifting into negativity, remind yourself that "stress" in itself is harmful to the baby. Think happy thoughts and drink lots of water.
