How do you remove engine oil from the driveway?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: How do you remove engine oil from the driveway?
By Insaneusmcwife on Sunday, February 8, 2004 - 12:51 pm:

My truck had a slow oil leak that I wasn't aware of because we usually park it on the street. My dad was looking at something under the truck and said the oil pan was loose so he tightened it and left it to sit in the driveway. The next morning the driveway was covered in oil. Dh came home for the weekend and spent all day yesterday fixing the oil pan. Now I need to know how to get the oil up out of the driveway. Dh put kitty litter to soak up the oil but now we have a huge ugly stain. Is there any way to get that stain up?

I don't know if this would work, but the website www.howtocleananything.com has a section on exterior cleaning, driveways. Maybe their suggestion would work for you. I didn't want to paste it here, because I'm not sure about the copyright laws.

Cover the mark with cat litter. Spread a thin coat of it, and change it several times until all the oil is gone. Then scrub with any strong de-greasing solvent. It should lighten a lot, and the weather will finally make it disappear.

A power washer will work. Sometimes you can rent them at local hardware stores or maybe a neighbor has one.

I did a google search and came up with quite a few suggestions. Murphy's Cleaner was one of them. Coke was one of the suggestions as well. I just searched "driveway oil clean".

Coke!?!...Its really scary to think that something we regularly drink eats away grease. My mil was telling me that she used to pour a can of coke into the wash when fil worked in the oil field. She said it works great. We got up all the excess oil and I scrubbed the drive way with oxyclean (thats all we had). It looks a little better but I'm still not happy with it. I don't know where we will find a power washer around here but I'll look into it. I'm going down the hill tomorrow so I'll have to pick up some degreasing solvant and try that. Thank You all for you suggestions :)

We've used a power scrubber and it didn't take it all off. We first had to use a solvent.

i just read in a magazine the other day that also said to pour a can of coke on the oil stain the night before and it should take off 99.9% of it by morning.

Coke vs Water

Amazing what "The Real Thing" can do! :)
