Vacation in New England

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: Vacation in New England
By Fraggle on Friday, February 6, 2004 - 09:23 am:

We had plans for a week vacation this summer, but they fell through so now I am back to square one with planning our summer vacation. Any ideas? Places you would recommend?

What kind of vacation did you have in mind? The beach, on a lake, in the mountains, in a touristy area?

We are planning to rent a cottage on a lake in either CT or NH. The one we rented and LOVED last summer is booked. There is one in NH we like, but the owner is out of the country until March 3rd. It was SO much fun renting a cottage on a lake with the kids. It was so laid back and relaxing. :)

Our first choice would be a cabin on a lake-but most good places are already reserved by now
:(. We had planned on going up to a cabin at Moosehead Lake where we stayed last year but they are not renting in August this year because of a family reunion. So we could try another rental up there, but the girls would rather go to New Hampshire so they can go to Santa's Village or Story Land. The last couple of times we have gone to NH we have stayed at the Red Jacket Inn in North Conway-its okay and convenient to the outlets, but I couldn't stay there a whole week. Pretty much I'm open to suggestions at this point.

Slightly up the road from North Conway is Inverness (I think), NH... it's a little closer to Santa's Village and Story Land. The last time we were there, we stayed at The New England Inn! It was awesome! The original building is very old, and we've never stayed there, but they have single log cabins (not good with kids) and two bedrooms loft types (maybe with kitchens?) and across the street, a whole separate building, which is their non-smoking and newest facility! It really is very nice and quiet! They have two restaurants and walking and hiking trails! We loved it!

There are quite a few rentals in NH.

Angela, The New England Inn sounds pretty good. I just checked their website. It looks like the suite rooms would work great for us because we just find it too crowded in a regular hotel room. Can you tell me anything else about it? Is it clean/modern as in updated. I'm pretty picky :). How about the restaurant on site. Any other restaurants in the area you would recommend? Thanks!

Thanks Trina for the link-I checked out a few but I will have to go back and look again.

There are TONS of restaurants up there. One of our favorites is a little brewpub - close to storyland, beautiful gardens, good kids menu, if your headed north on rte 16 it's on your left, before storyland but after North Conway center. I will try and think of the name of it. There is also another place that looks good but is horrible - lipstick on my glass, etc. I will try and remember the names of both for you.

that's the website for the brew pub. I can't remember the name of the bad restaurant. Dh is headed up to that area tonight to go snowboarding so I'll ask him to check the name for me.

I have eaten at tons of places in North Conway but not that pub. We almost stopped there last time we were there-but just as we were pulling it-a huge gang of gross dirty guys starting piling into the place-so DH pulled out and we went back to the hotel for room service. I guess next time we will have to try it :). Thanks Colette.

I've only seen families in there. I think we've been there 3 or 4 times now. Go to their website and check out the dining area. It's surrounded by beautiful gardens in the summer. The bar is in a different room - it's an old house so you dine in various rooms.

Colette,Did you remember the name of the restaurant that you did not like in NH? After searching the computer it looks like we are just going to spend a couple of nights mid-week in N. Conway-We are thinking about the Comfort Inn since it is new and right in the middle of things-plus their rates are very reasonable. I saw a lot of really nice places that we would love to stay but at $400 a night it would totally blow our Disney budget(hopefully going in Dec.) Thanks for everyones input!

I don't remember the name and I just checked the mount washington dining guide and it's not listed. I'd know the name if I saw it. If your heading north on rt 16 it's on your right, it has an outside, upstairs, deck. I think it's grey. I'll keep looking to see if I can find the name. The Flatbread Co. is really good too, for unique pizza's.

By Colette on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 09:52 am:

I think it was "Guldies".

By Fraggle on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 10:02 am:

Colette, I was looking at our outlet map from N. Conway and I almost asked if it was Guldies! I haven't eaten there so we will stay away from it when we go this summer-Thanks. Where is the Flatbread Co?

By Colette on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 10:56 am:

I don't know exactly. It's new up there, but we have one down here. http://www.jointhefarm.org/newsletter/02-spring/flatbread.htm

I just checked I guess it's where the Eastern Slope Inn is. A little past all the outlets and stuff.

What month are you going? alot of places up there are not air conditioned because they are so near the mountains. You are probably ok w/the Comfort Inn but I would double check if you like a/c.

What part of Maine are you in? There is a Flatbread in Portland too.

By Fraggle on Tuesday, February 10, 2004 - 11:25 am:

I know where the Eastern Slope Inn is so I will have to check out the Flatbread Co., too. We are going in August-and yes air conditioning is an issue. I checked Comfort Inn and they do have a/c. Last year we didn't stay overnight when we went to Story Land-it is about an 1 hour and 15 min. from our house, but the year before we stayed at the Eagle Mountain House in Jackson-no A/C. We thought it would be okay, but DH had a really hard time sleeping (we were on the 3rd floor I think)-so we wouldn't do it again.

We are just south of Portland, but we never really go out to eat anymore. I haven't really been to the Old Port since I had my youngest since it is hard to shop and stuff with a carriage. My sister ate at Flatbread in Portland a few times and loves it.

A good rest./pub to go to in N. Conway is Horsefeathers, it is across the street from Eastern Mountain Sport (Slope). I go to N. Conway just about everyother weekend, we love it there.

By Fraggle on Thursday, February 12, 2004 - 09:39 am:

I like Horsefeathers, but we are not patient enough to stick out the wait in the summertime. They don't have call ahead seating now by any chance?
