What do you "go with the cheap brand" on?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive February 2004: What do you "go with the cheap brand" on?
By Mommyathome on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 03:53 pm:

Just curious to see what people buy the generic brand of. Also, is there something that absolutely won't buy generic?

We buy generic envelopes and paper....usually the store brand. Also, I don't mind buying the store brand of tomato sauce. I will also buy store brand "cream of" soups.

I won't buy store brand/generic on feminine products, butter, and hot dogs.

I buy generic paper plates and napkins. I buy generic fruit type/gummie type snacks for the kids. I will buy generic tin foil, .
I guess thats all I can think of right now. LOL

By Colette on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 04:27 pm:

I won't by generic food products or feminine products or laundry detergent.

I buy our store brand of trash bags because they are made from recycled plastics. I've also bought tp and paper towels made from recycled paper but I won't do that again.

I've tried generic paper towels and that was just a complete waste of money.I don't buy any kind of generic meat and poultry - DS and DH have very specific preferences on those. Also DH doesn't like generic OJ.
I do use a lot of generic stuff like detergents, dishwasher liquid, paper plates , batteries, hand soap , bleach , potting soil, toilet cleaners .Just a few that I can think of right now.

I bought generic mayo the other time I bought it and didn't realize it until I was done with the jar:) The label looked almost exact and I couldn't tell the difference, when I went back I saved over a $1 a jar!

By Truestori on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 04:47 pm:

I use coupons so I rarely ever find generic anything cheaper!

Some of the generic soda pops are decent, though. :)

By Sue3 on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 04:52 pm:

I buy everything store brand except paper towel and laundry soap , fabric softener , body soap,
and Hair care stuff.
I shop at Meijers .
I love it.

By Mrse on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 04:58 pm:

Yes, I do buy generic, or no name, but the looks you get when you walk by someone while grocery shopping with a pile of bright yellow lables from the no-name I could do with out.

By Amy~moderator on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 05:55 pm:

I am with Stori, I use coupons every time I go to the grocery, and you can get brand name cheaper than generic with coupons.

I do not buy generic paper towels. I usually use them to clean up spills or to drain meat on. So, I want sturdy paper towels. I personally buy Viva paper towels (a Kleenex brand) and I will buy no other type.

I don't buy generic on feminine products or hygiene products.

Some things I do buy generic are many types of medicine/pain relievers, "cream of" cans, some canned vegetables, garbage bags, paper.

Fun post Robin! :)

I shop at the commissary so there really isn't a generic or store brand there. My parents bought as much as they could store brand (Meijer) and most of the time you couldn't tell the difference. When I have shopped off base and bought some store brand stuff, dh has a fit. Food was something his family never skimped or tried to save money on. His mom always bought the best of whatever. Spoiled him rotten! lol I remember trying no-name mac and cheese once and he wouldn't eat it. I do have to admit, however, that whatever store it was from (can't remember), it was nasty. WAY too much salt! Dh only eats Kraft.

By Marg on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:17 pm:

Amy you sound like me with paper towel, I love Viva and won't buy anything else, it is so soft!

By Dawnk777 on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:32 pm:

Brand name feminine products, toilet paper, paper towel.

Generic or store brand chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, butter -- in my cookies I really can't tell the difference.

My dh tried to get away with off-brand mac and cheese. NASTY! It was also waaaay too salty. Only Kraft for us. We actually haven't had Kraft Mac and Cheese for a long time.

Gotta be Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi. Off-brand colas are just nasty!

Store-brand OJ, Old Orchard for the other flavors

By Trisa on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 07:08 pm:

Store brand paper plates and cream soups
Marg I also LOVE viva paper towels!!

By Vicki on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 07:20 pm:

Wow, I didn't realize this until tonight, but I really don't buy generic anything. I have tried some things in the past and I feel you really do get what you pay for! I can tell the difference.

By Luvn29 on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 07:50 pm:

The one thing that I WILL NEVER buy generic again that comes to mind right away is sliced cheese!

And I like my Miracle Whip, but then again, I haven't ever tried the store brand of this.

I have to have my namebrand feminine products. I can DEFINITELY tell a difference!

When money is really tight, we will buy a case of Sam's Cola from Wal-mart, and we all really like it. But Sam's is the only generic brand of soda we will ever buy...

Hmmm... always get generic meds when it comes to Tylenol and my prescription meds. Except in my script meds that they don't have generic. Can't afford the name brands there!!!

We always get storebrand whole milk and a lot of times O.J. but I like Mayfield O.J. better...

Some store brand cereals are okay, but others you can really tell the difference.

Mostly, I buy cheaper name brands...

But when it comes to canned veggies I LOVE my green giant! hehe!

By Tonya on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 08:38 pm:

We buy more generic than we do name brand but there are a few things I have to have that are not generic like, laundry soap, hot dogs, bologna, pop, miracle whip-mayo, kraft cheese, ranch dressing and green giant corn!!

By Luvn29 on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 08:50 pm:

Tonya! We are so much alike it's scary! hehe!

NASCAR (except the drivers--hehe!)

Miracle Whip

Kraft Cheese

Green Giant Corn

(ValleyDale) hot dogs and bologna

:) :) :) :) :)

I always hated cheapie diapers. Sometimes dh would try to spend less on diapers. I never thought they were as absorbent as the brand names. Of the main three, I couldn't really see a difference between them, but definitely good on the next tier down in price.

My other thing is buying Glad sandwich bags, not the ziplock type, but the type with the flap you fold over. The cheap ones don't come out of the box one at a time and the cheap ones aren't as big!

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 09:20 am:

I WON'T buy generic on:
Mayo, cheese, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry and dish washing products, P-nut butter (choosey Mom's choose Jif!), shampoo, etc. OJ or COFFEE!

It's rare for us to eat hotdogs, but *if* we do, we buy only Hebrew National or Nathan's if we can find them, otherwise we buy Bryan beefy jumbos.

By Fraggle on Saturday, January 31, 2004 - 05:52 pm:

Pasta and 100% juices are the only things I can think of that I buy generic. I have tried a few generic cereals and wasn't very impressed. I never buy generic dairy products (sour cream has to be Breakstones or nothing).

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, February 1, 2004 - 12:02 am:

Store-brand sour cream doesn't bother me. Store brand shredded cheddar cheese doesn't bother me, either. It even comes in a ziplock bag, too.

By Babysitbarb on Sunday, February 1, 2004 - 01:04 pm:

I would say it's about even on the generic stuff I buy. When it comes to beauty products, laundry products, meat, dairy products or drinks then Im more paticular. I will try the generic and if I don't like it then I go back to the name brand. I try to use as many coupons and cut outs that I can.

By Babysitbarb on Sunday, February 1, 2004 - 01:06 pm:

I tried buying generic mayo and my family could teel the difference and so could I.
