Water Emergency - no dishes, showers, or laundry

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Water Emergency - no dishes, showers, or laundry
By Dawnk777 on Thursday, January 29, 2004 - 11:38 pm:

The intake pipes on Lake Michigan (to bring water into the water treatment plant) are still clogged. They have been iced over since last night. They are going to try some stuff tomorrow and seem to think it will work. I guess I will believe it when I see it.

Earlier today, they said no dishwashers or washing machines, but you could bathe and drink. Now, they are saying no showers, too. Well, too late for Sarah and me. We had already taken showers about an hour before that. I'll be good until Saturday. I don't shower everyday in the winter anyway because I would turn into a prune. It dries out my skin too much.

We still have clean clothes for tomorrow. I'm not sure if we will for Saturday, so I hope they get this fixed tomorrow. We still have water, fortunately, so we can still use the bathroom.

Temps won't help much tonight. -5 now and going down to -10. Windchills -25 or so! Brrr. It was quite chilly the last time I was out with the dog.

Oh man, that sucks!!! It's been that cold here, too, but luckily we haven't had that kind of emergency. I hope they get it fixed tomorrow!

By Colette on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 05:44 am:

Brrr...hope that gets fixed quick.

By Marg on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:04 am:

I'll send some (((warm))) thoughts and air your way!

By Trina~moderator on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:39 am:

Yikes! Hope the water problem is fixed SOON!

By Feona on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:57 am:

Wow! That does sound like an emergency. How cold is it there?

By Feona on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 06:57 am:

just saw - -25 brrr...

By Colette on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 07:22 am:

I think I'd be looking at hotels if I had no water....

By Marg on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 07:52 am:

Colette made a good point Dawn, what do businesses do to cut back on this usage? Just curious.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, January 30, 2004 - 08:08 am:

The Kohler Company didn't run their pottery jobs at all yesterday. They need lots of water to cool the machines. Plenco (Plastics Engineering Co. mfrs of resins for plastic stuff) didn't run some shifts yesterday. Muth Mirror also didn't run their shifts yesterday.

A diver is going down to connect a temporary pipe, in abuout 25 minutes (7:30am) and they expect the water emergency to be lifted about 9am.

We actually still HAD water. SHeboygan usually uses about 16 million gallons a day. They had water in a resevoir, but only about 5 million gallons, so not really enough for normal usage. I was always able to flush my toilet and my daughter and I did take showers last night.

Even with a special suit, that Lake Michigan water has got to be COLD! BRRR! I'm glad it's not me going down 40 feet into that water!

A hotel wouldn't have helped if we had run out of water. We would have had to travel to a different city!

Dh's best friend from the Navy died in January 2000. He was out of the Navy and trained to be a commerical diver. He died doing some commercial work up on the Allegheny River or somewhereabouts up there.

I would never do it either, but he really enjoyed it. I told dh what a horrific way to die. He was left behind two children.

I would think diving like that could be risky. It must have worked this morning, though, since they did lift the water emergency now.

My washing machine is humming away now! Later tonight, when we are in for the night, I will wash my dirty jacket.

Glad to hear everything is in working order again! Sometimes we take things for granted, and this helps us remember to be appreciated for the quiet things in life (water, power, natural gas etc.)
Enjoy your washing machine and showers!!

Thanks! I will appreciate a clean jacket tomorrow!

Well, teens tomorrow and 20's on Sunday. I can't wait! Everytime I was outside today, it was just so darned cold. It was kind of windy, which just makes it worse! I'm so ready for warmer weather.

I checked the weather predictions for the next week and it looks like we will be shoveling snow again, but it won't be near as cold.
