No School today

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: No School today
By Jackie on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 07:32 am:

They closed school today as it snowed yesterday. I think our area only got between 2-4 inches, but thats enough to close to the schools. The reason they do it here in Va Beach is that they dont have enough snow and ice removal systems. The plows and such work on the main roads. And, that leaves the side roads in the neighborhoods bad, and school bus cant and wont come down the roads like that.
My son is a walker, and we can see the school from the house. SO for us, bad weather would never be a problem.
Living in the CHicago area for 29 yrs before moving here, this is so strange to me that schools are closed for such a little bit of snow.

By Trisa on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 08:23 am:

No school here. And its looks like freezing
rain will be coming tonight and tomorrow.
I don't mind. My son has to do a project for school about smoking so we can work on that
today. I do worry about my hubby since he has a 40 drive to work. Its to get bad late tonight and he won't be home until after midnight.

I live in North Carolina, and our schools are closed today too. We got about four inches, I think, but on top of that is sleet and freezing rain. Our schools are always closed when we get this much snow, but it is usually a teacher's workday. Today the teachers are off too which gives me a day off from babysitting my two grandchildren whose mother is a school teacher. That gives me the opportunity to be on the computer a little more, but I really need to do some serious house cleaning. LOL!

We have a 2 hour delay here. I think we probably got about 2-3 inches last night. Once the sun comes up it melts what's on the roads, but until then they're usually pretty slick. They use sand here instead of salt. Better for the cars, but not as effective, imo.

By Kernkate on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 08:45 am:

We lucked out on this snow this time. We didn't get any at all. Its snowing 16 miles south of me, but we didn't see one flake. Tomorrow into Wednesday they are calling for 4-8 inches here with ice. So I am sure our kids will have a snow day this week. I would much rather the snow then the ice.

By Dananivyboo1 on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 09:16 am:

No school or work for my dh. I guess we got abou 4 inches and its supposed to start back up again around noon. The roads are so bad and havent even been really cleaned since last snow storm. We are supposed to get snow all through Wednesday (on and off)

By Brandy on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 09:44 am:

2 hour delay in Indiana well where we are lol...

By Mrse on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 10:20 am:

All I see is green grass!! no snow here at all, it all melted away, but the forcast did say something about snow later in the week, but I am sure it will get all washed away with rain, soon after that.

By Paulas on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 11:19 am:

We still have school although I had to take the day off since my car won't start. It is -47C. I can't tell you what that is in F as my thermometer doesn't go that low. The buses aren't running today but the schools are still open.

I live on a mountain in CA. Once every couple of years we will get a few inches of snow. That is enough to close down the mountain for up to a few days until it all melts! The last time that happened was two years ago. The mountain was closed for three days. And we were very happy to have had our generator as our power was out for the same period of time. Come to think of it, we were thankful for dh's chain saw as we had to clear our road of the trees before we could drive out!

By Joan on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 01:24 pm:

I'm in Indiana too and our schools were closed. My ds needs the extra time studing for a spelling test anyway.

Closed here in Ohio too! Come to think of it, we were closed Friday because of the extreme cold too. Didn't even realize we had a 4 day weekend! Forcast isn't looking great either. I would bet we will have at least one other snow day this week!!

By Dawnk777 on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 02:53 pm:

2-4 inches??? Not here! Windy and snowing. All went to school. First graders and kindergarteners stayed in for recess. 2nd thru 5th graders went outside.

In Wisconsin, we have so much snow removal equipment, conditions have to be just right to end up with a snow day. They are pretty efficient with cleaning up after a snowstorm.

By Bobbie on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 10:32 pm:

We got 3 inches of snow Friday night and another 6 inches last night. So we have a total of 9 inches of snow. The schools were closed. They are calling for freezing rain and snow through the night and tomorrow too. They closed over 200 schools in Central and Southern Ohio today and many of them are already on delay for tomorrow because we have a lot of fog because temps are up and snow on the ground. How long until Spring??? I am thinking we might get atleast one more snow day out of this week too with the way the forecast is looking.

By Tonya on Monday, January 26, 2004 - 10:41 pm:

We had school today but I think it will close tomorrow. Our city never closed unless it is really bad and it has been years since the scholl was closed.

By Marg on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 06:32 am:

We are closed again today and I'll bet they'll be closed again tomorrow.

I don't mind, but dh is subcontracted out to the school district and the company he works for doesn't pay when there is no school. I know this sounds simplistic, but last year they had so many days off they started staying a 1/2 later, and he was not paid overtime for this:(

By Brandy on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 08:43 am:

My boys are out of school today Mara are yours going today?

By Kernkate on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 09:41 am:

Closed here today and probably tomorrow. We got 3 inches of snow last night and tonight is suppose to get nasty with ice and 8-12inches of snow:(
Break out the shovels!!!

By Gammiejoan on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 12:46 pm:

Schools here are closed again today. In fact road conditions are worse this morning because of all the ice on top of the packed snow. The street in front of our house is like a skating rink.

By Bobbie on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 08:36 pm:

The high schools were in session today but the elementary schools closed right before the busses were to pick up. They canceled all of the evening programs (sports etc) tonight. We are under a warning and it is freezing outside so I am sure it will be one big mess come morning. So hopefully they will be closing school. That would be nice but not holding my breath. We are to get more snow tonight according to the news reports.

By Mommyof4 on Tuesday, January 27, 2004 - 08:37 pm:

We have 12 inches here in Nebraska and were closed yesterday and today. I'm sure schools will be back in session tomorrow (oh how I hope so anyway!!!!)

By Colette on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 06:04 am:

We were supposed to get hit last night and not one flake fell. Whoo hoo!

By Trina~moderator on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 06:21 am:

Colette, we got it down here in CT. LOL! Still snowing... No School today. DH has yet to decide if he wants to attempt the commute into Hartford or not. I'm trying to persuade him to stay home. :)

By Colette on Wednesday, January 28, 2004 - 06:30 am:

you can keep it! I'd rather be going to school now in the cold than in June. Good luck on persuading dh! My dh wanted to get up early to beat the commute and when I told him it wasn't snowing, he rolled over and went back to sleep. He's still sleeping! Not fair.
