Cold and Chilly in Wisconsin today

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Cold and Chilly in Wisconsin today
By Dawnk777 on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 02:28 pm:

We woke up to this:

Temperature -6 °F / -21 °C
Windchill -29 °F / -34 °C

Except for some private schools and daycares in Milwaukee and Head Start in Sheboygan, no one cancelled school. Obviously an indoor recess this morning. My thermometer at home got down to -8.9 this morning and has risen all the way to -2.2! Oh boy!

I'm not sure what the cutoff for cancelling school is. I know once they did cancel school for the cold, but I think it was a LOT colder than this. I asked the secretary at the school where I work, but she didn't know either.

So, a beautiful sunny day, but the sun sure isn't doing much for us today. Tomorrow, we get up into the teens and get a little snow.

Brrrrrrrrr. We are currently at 5 with a windchill of -15. Ds had school today. They just let them go in early so they don't have to wait outside. Ds doesn't have recess since he is just 1/2 day K, but I am sure there will be inside recess for us too.

We had that last week. You can keep it!

By Marg on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 02:47 pm:

We warmed up to 35 today. I was surprised yesterday it didn't get above 15 and last night it was at 10, when I took the kids to school it was 33, It's truly a balmy day here is PA:)

By Cat on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 02:48 pm:

It's 32* right now. Supposed to get in the 40's today. I don't know if we'll make it or not. Tomorrow and Saturday are supposed to be in the 50's, then snow for Sunday and Monday. Gotta love Colorado weather! :)

By Debbie on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 02:51 pm:

Gosh, being a Texas girl, I never thought I would be praying for it to get into the 30's. We will be in the 30's by this weekend and I am so excited. I must be nuts!!

By Cat on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 02:53 pm:

Lol, Debbie! Heck, when we lived in Maine, kids were in shorts when it hit 40* and people grilled out all year long! You just have to shovel a spot for the grill and you were good to go. :) rofl

Rofl Cat, I told dh that our blood will thicken up soon. We always laugh at our neighbor who is out walking his dog in just his sweatshirt. I told dh, that will be you soon. He was like "yea, right"

I wear a spring jacket down into the 40's. Barely a winter jacket in the 30's. Definitely a winter jacket zipped up in the 20's and down.

Today is just nasty. Even to run from the car into the house is almost too cold without a hat. I'm looking forward to warmer temps over the weekend also.

By Sue3 on Thursday, January 22, 2004 - 04:52 pm:

Yes Dawn , It is that cold here also in Michigan.
Almost all schools were closed today but they were all by the lake shore , about 60 miles from where we are.
Saturday we go to ludington for DD`s swim meet
and I am alittle nervous because ludington is right by lake michigan.
Hoping the weather will be O.K.
we will just have to leave a little earlier.
It`s about a hour and 1/2 drive.
well stay warm dawn !
From your neighbor across the lake

Is it colder by the lake? I know that western Michigan gets a lot more lake effect snow than we do, since the winds are usually out of the west. In the summer, it's cooler by the lake. Sometimes a good thing, sometimes not so good. I live about 1-1/2 miles from the shore of Lake Michigan. On the main drag into town from the freeway, you can see Lake Michigan as you drive east. I would have to walk a block out to the main drag to see Lake Michigan myself, but only in the winter. Can't see it when leaves are on the trees.

With the wind chill, it's been between -35 and -40 for the past couple of weeks. Our schools don't close, but have indoor recess. The buses were cancelled 2x for extreme cold last week, and once for a blizzard. Because my kids go to a walking school, they are more than welcome to go.
I have been wearing my winter coat for these 2 weeks, but just a polar fleece jacket for the rest of the winter. I have wearing a bit coat!
Yes, we barbecue all year. It's right outside our sliding glass door, so I can just open the door and flip the steaks. :o)

By Dawnk777 on Friday, January 23, 2004 - 10:14 am:

Oh okay. The wind chill wasn't quite that cold yesterday. Today, we have gotten up into the single digits and it's less windy, so seems much warmer than yesterday, even though it's still pretty cold. I didn't wear a jacket outside to tie the dog up, but I did have a sweatshirt on.

We have grilled out in the winter, too, just not this year. We need a new grill. The other one is just getting worn out AND we need the new type of propane tank.
