What would you do?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: What would you do?

OUr neightbour's father passed away and I'd like to do something for them, I was going to make a mac and cheese casserole dish, but it sounds like they have enough food given to them. I have offered that if they need someone to watch the kids to send them over, or if there was anything else to let us know. Any suggestions on what else I can do for them?

If they go to church maybe you would like to get them a mass card. I know when my son passed away I had so much food so people were doing that. They did the best they can but what can you do.

Was there anything their father was especially fond of or involved in? Like a local library or zoo or park or something? Or maybe a member of the Lions or another orginization? If so you could always make a donation in his name. They might appreciate that. Just a thought.

Snack baskets! When my parents died we had SOOO much food. So many casseroles we didn't know what to do with them. Then, a lady brought a snack basket. It was a nice basket, with a nice piece of fabric in it. Filled with crackers and easy cheese and pudding cups and so on. It was the best thing. We had lots of meals, but no real munchies. It was great for the kids in the family that had congregated at my house. And, sometimes in such a bad time you don't really feel like having a full meal...just a snack to help you through.

When my mom died, I had so many people say "what can I do?" or "just call me if you think of something" Well, I didn't know what I needed! I was in shock (this happened very unexpectedly). I had never been through this so I didn't know what needed to be done. Offer to pick up out of town company at the airport, go to the grocery store for them, the cleaners. In about 2 months when everyone else has gone on with their lives and the family is still coping, then bring over the casserole.

I love the snack basket idea! A lady brought over a simple budnt cake for us, we devoured it. Also breakfast muffins would have been nice, especially the mini ones, I know my dad could hardly eat, but might have had one of those.

I do a basket made up of a pound of coffee, tea bags, sugar, sweet and lo, 1/2 and 1/2, some dry non dairy creamer. And if it doesn't get used it will always keep.
