Low blood sugar/diabetes/High blood sugar

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Low blood sugar/diabetes/High blood sugar
By Mommyathome on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 04:12 pm:

I'm thinking I could have a sugar issue. I was just at the doctor yesterday for something completely different, and I didn't even think to ask about this. I was too focused on the reason for me being there at that time.

Anyway, I feel different depending on what I eat. That isn't normal is it? Or maybe it is? Ahh! If I get up in the morning and eat something sweet (including sweetened cereal) I feel like crap. But, if I get up and eat something healthy, about 3 hours later I get a sick feeling that I can't kick unless I have something sweet.

Today for instance....I got up and ate wheat thins (I'm not a breakfast eater...I know, not healthy...just telling you :)). By lunch I felt really icky. I ate a tuna fish sandwich and baked lays. I waited, and I still felt awful. Then, I drank a soda (Dr. Pepper...not diet) and before it was half way gone I felt great!

I guess I'm trying to figure out if this could be a blood sugar problem, or if I just need a caffeine fix sometimes or what. Anyone familiar with diabetes? My mom had it, but I never really got into it all that much. Probably should have.

By Trina~moderator on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 04:48 pm:

I had Gestational Diabetes during my first pregnancy, and because my Dad is a diabetic, I'm high risk for developing it again.

Anyway, if I eat something high in carbs for breakfast (like waffles and syrup) I feel crappy because my sugar is too high. If I have something healthy (yogurt, wheat toast and a milk) I feel fine but will need to snack a few hours later to bring my sugar back up. Right now I feel icky because I haven't eaten since noon. I typically have to eat or snack every 2 or 3 hrs. or I don't feel well. I have to monitor my carb intake on both ends - too high/too low. Basically everything but meat has carbs. They tell diabetics to avoid sweets because they are very high in carbs but they really need to watch their total carb intake and be wary of other high carb foods such as pasta, soda, breads, fruit, etc.. I feel better if I have protein in every meal or snack - meat, dairy.

Bottom line, especially since your mom was a diabetic, it's a good idea to go to your doctor to get tested. I need to go, too!

By Mommyathome on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 05:20 pm:

Thanks for the response Trina. What a pain! I've been feeling like this for months, and have just started realizing that the way I feel coordinates with what I'm eating. (yeah, guess I'm a little slow LOL) I have a follow-up appt. with my doctor after the first of February, so I'll bring it up then. Unless it tends to bug me a lot between now and then.

BTW, I was adopted, so there isn't a blood relation with my parents. I guess that makes it worse rather than better...at least if there was a blood relation I would know more what to watch for! But, I agree, I do need to get tested.

By Lauram on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 05:43 pm:

I have PCOS and insulin resistance (basically I'm prediabetic). I have ot make sure I eat lots of protein and watch my carbs. Try that and see how you feel..... I am montitored every six months by blood tests too.

By Robin on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 05:49 pm:

I eat fish for breakfast. Sometimes, I eat grilled fish (leftovers from night before) sometimes canned fish (sardines, oysters, etc). I feel great! I can usually last until about 3 pm until I need to eat anything else.

I also feel awful if I have something sweet for breakfast, even coffee makes me sick to my stomach. For me, protein is the way to go...I also eat steak for breakfast when it is on sale! I keep my fruits (even orange juice) until later on in the day.

By Texannie on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 06:43 pm:

I have dysglycemia (another fancy name for insulin imbalance). I really watch my starchy carbs and only eat whole grain ones when I do. (whole grain breads, brown rice, whole wheat pasta). I try to make sure I eat something every 3 hours. I need to have protein or a highly complex carb for breakfast. If I start to get shaky, instead of reaching for sugar (which will make you feel better, but will also make you crash 3 hours later) I will have some raw almonds and a piece of cheese or natural peanut butter with an apple.

By Mommyathome on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 06:47 pm:

Robin, orange juice makes me feel gross too if I have it in the morning.
This is interesting.
I'll have to start writing down what I eat and how I feel afterwards. That way, when I go into the doctor next month I'll be very prepared :)

By Texannie on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 07:44 pm:

It can be a vicious cycle. You don't feel well, so you have sugar, then you feel great cause your blood sugar has now been elevated BUT 3 hours later the sugar leaves you and you crash feeling tired, maybe dizzy and lightheaded so you eat MORE sugar and the cycle continues. Then to make matters even worse, if you try to give up the sugar and carbs, you will feel HORRIBLE almost fluish as you body detoxifies and you think "why am I doing this again???"

By Mommyathome on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 09:30 pm:

LOL Annie...sounds great ;) Ughhh....I just want to be 7 years old again. That seemed to be a pretty good age :)

By Texannie on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 10:03 pm:

There you go! LOL I forgot to mention, if you do detox, it's well worth it!

By Marg on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 10:21 am:

Robin,

In Sept and Oct I felt the same way! Did a lot of blood tests because I was like Trina when I was pregnant. The dr told me mom blood sugar was fluctuating and I should eat 4-5 smaller meals. Had the exact same systems as you.

Since nothing medically helped,a person I know had told me to work my way up to 1000 mg of vitamin C and a vitamin everyday. This was due to all my sinus problems. However, this also apparently helped my blood sugar level out. My sinus are so much better, I have not had a cold, and my, well, I told you about my blood sugar. So it must really be helping.

Do you take regular vitamins?

By Mommyathome on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 10:31 am:

Yeah, I take a multivitamin daily. But, I haven't been faithful about it until the new year. (One of my resolutions is to make sure I take it every day!) So, I've been taking one daily for a few weeks now.

By Marg on Saturday, January 17, 2004 - 11:59 am:

If you haven't you might want to call the dr. That's what I did because, I was getting worse, feeling like throwing up, light headed, migraines and eventually not wanting to eat.

They did the blood work, several different tests and said it was fluctuating, gave some food advice and told me if it kept up more tests would have to be done in case of diabetes. I switched my food schedule and like I said started the vitamins and feel much better.

I hope you feel better, it's not a fun thing to go through. At first I was gonna ask if you were pregnant. I knew I wasn't, but I had some of the symptoms.

By Mrsclark on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 09:05 am:

Sorry this is sooo long, but really into this particular post with my new healthy self! I have had your symptoms (original poster and some others here) most of my life and never really understood it. (I'm 46) However, my bp went up in the last few years, and I have had an irregular heartbeat for years, but the last 3 it has gotten insane where it would skip one every 2 beats! I could not walk upstairs without being dizzy, etc., out of breath, I could not sing at church because I would get dizzy, etc. It just got out of control. I was moody and would eat and then a couple hours later feel so edgy or yucky or just didn't know what it was, just bad! Even in high school (I was away in academy, so didn't have my mom making my food) I ate junk food and man -- what a change in my moods! Recently the doctor checked my heart, took TONS of pictures, blah, blah, blah, put me on bp meds, tried me on Paxill (sp) and I took ONE pill and nearly died I was so sick and weird, so I didn't take any more and I threw the rest away and still wondered what was wrong. WELLLLL....to my surprise! I have wanted to lose 10-15 pounds for a long time and couldn't, I eat too much! :) So I finally broke down and started looking at Atkins and I am a vege so wondered how I could do it. Well, I won't go into all the vege food I found (vege meat) that is zero carbs, but...I have been on it only a week (tomorrow) and you know what? My heart is actually not skipping any more! My blood pressure has gone down quite a bit and I feel fine walking up my stairs now! I cannot beleive it, I really can't. This is one week of 20g carbs or less a day. If you eat meat it is easier I suppose, but I am doing fine! I have found many yummy things (including tortillas) that are very low carb and also I tried to eat yesterday here a taco, usually I can down 8 or so, really! I love them. I finished one and even though I really, really wanted it, I could not eat any more. It takes the appetite away, it takes cravings away. Not because it is Atkins -- just cut the carbs out, your body will make them from the protein and fat. It's wonderful and I feel great for the first time in I don't know how long. I do not feel moody as I did, or stressed or yucky...I could soooo relate with the above posts! Good luck! Email me if you want more info I found on lo carb foods (mrsdlclark1@ameritech.net). I was just like you -- loved a waffle and can't eat them for breakfast because too much sugar! My son made choc chip cookies -- I used to eat them -- they didn't even really appeal to me yesterday!

By John on Sunday, January 18, 2004 - 10:39 am:

My family has a long history of diabetes.

My dad developed insulin dependent diabetes in his 60's and took insulin injections every morning. We discovered it the hard way when he got sick one day and didn't get better. When he went to the hospital his glucose was over 400.

My mom developed diabetes around age 60 and takes medication with every meal.

My sister started developing sympthoms after her first child was born and she gained a lot of weight.

I started having hypoglycemic sympthoms(headache, dizzyness whenr not eating for a while) a few years ago.

Since I began controlling my carbohydrate intake six months ago these sympthoms have disappeared completely.

You may want to go to your doctor for a blood glucose tolerance test.

It takes about 6 hours. They give you a glass of sugar water and then test your blood glucose repeatedly over the next 6 hours.

With this test they can detect the beginnings of classic diabetes (the body not making enough insulin) and syndrome-x or insulin resistance where the body no longer responds to its own insulin.

Diabetes is an extremly serious disease that can lead to coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, blindness and early death.

Please see a doctor as soon as you can :)

Dear mommy at Home,
I feel the same way. Also after reading the other posts , I am thinking that I should get some blood work done.It can`t hurt.
I was put on high blood pressure meds almost a year ago and I have always seemed to have sugar (carb) issues.
I am currently on the south beach diet program
hoping that will help.
Though it seems if I don`t get enough cabs I am sooooooo tired that I can`t stand it.
I am going to do what you are doing and start writing things down then make an appointment
with my Dr.
