If anyone tried to email me - I had server problems with RCN - sort of funny, in the end.

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: If anyone tried to email me - I had server problems with RCN - sort of funny, in the end.
By Ginny~moderator on Friday, January 16, 2004 - 06:24 am:

In the end it turned out to be fairly funny, but for two days I was off line at home.

Seems that back in 02, when I renewed my contract with RCN.com and did it by credit card, I did not "opt out" of automatic billing to my credit card for future renewals - after all, who reads those contracts to the bitter end. So, when my purse was lost about a year ago and I canceled my credit cards, when RCN tried to bill for renewal last May the billing was refused. In the interim, RCN had changed database systems, and for reasons known only to RCN and their new database sysetm never billed me.

So I went merrily on, surfing the internet and emailing with abandon, from last May until 2 days ago, when all of a sudden I had no internet at home. After two days of trying to log on, I finally called their support line last night and, after about a half hour wait, got Bill, this very nice young man who explored my account after I suggested that payment might be the problem and found, lo and behold, that I was right.

And, in the process, for reasons unknown to Bill or me, when RCN re-billed me last November for the 2nd 6-month period, a few days after that they gave me a credit. So when I paid by credit card (no automatic billing, thank you), I paid $146 for service from May 2003 through May 2004, instead of $226.

What really ticks me off is that in that whole time - from the end of May 2003 until last night, no one at RCN told me my account wasn't paid. No email, no snailmail, no phone call. They just let me go merrily along until BOOM, no internet.

Bill was very nice, and obviously I am back on the internet. Once Bill explained what the account history showed and we figured out what had happened (and the $80 credit from nowhere), I started giggling, and disconcerted that poor man by breaking out in fits of giggles as he credited my payment and then did the things he had to do to get my account immediately reinstated so I could go back on line.

So, if I have missed any email messages, please re-send the message.

I'm glad you got everything straightened out!

If you switch to Comcast, they'll definitely let you know when your bill isn't paid.

In order to switch to Comcast I'd have to have cable, and so far I haven't seen any listings on cable worth what cable costs in my area.

My remark was a jab at Comcast. I've been a customer for many years and they let me know right away when I haven't paid them on time. I don't have it automatically billed to my credit card, so that may be why. :)

I know, Sunny. Unhappily, although I have a sense of humor I don't show it very well, and I really don't like to use "LOL" all the time. Comcast is, to my mind, the pits, and I hope I never have to deal with them.
