Do your family have a "safe place"?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Do your family have a "safe place"?

After looking at Amy's pix, I started thinking about my kids. Would they know what to do if there was a fire? an earthquake? Ds knows to call 911 if someone is hurt, etc. I know in school they teach the kids to get under a doorway or a desk during a quake and they teach the kids to calmly walk to designated areas. But what about at home? Do your children know what to do at home? I know we will be talking about this when ds gets home from school. When he was 2, I did home daycare on Pendleton. We had a Disaster Plan and he learned it quite well. It was a weekend, dh got up early and decided to scrub a skillet I was soaking over night. He put soapy water in the skillet and turned on the stove to let it hopefully loosen the caked on stuff. Well he sat down to watch tv and fell asleep. The water boiled out and the pan started to burn. The smoke detector went off. This awoke me and I ran down stairs to find my dh trying to dismantle the smoke detector. Seeing that all was ok I headed back upstairs to take a shower. Before I made it to the top of the stairs the door bell rang. My neighbor had my ds. He had let himself outside and went to the "safe place" and was waiting there crying because we didnt come out of the house.

AWWWW! How scary for him!! What a smart little boy, he knew exactly what to do! You taught him very well!

Our meeting spot is my in-laws house. THey live right next door. Of course it doesn't help much that i didn't tell my kids that. I think my dd knows, because we talked about it while they learned about fire saftey at school. But my ds doesn't know. I guess i should tell him that...
