I Scared DH Tonight.....

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: I Scared DH Tonight.....
By Hol on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 10:47 pm:

DH went for his walk about 5:00PM, and I went into the bathroom to take my shower. DS's were playing Playstation.

I have varicose veins in my legs, worse on my left leg, than on my right. They are from the knee to the ankle. My Mom has them, too, as does my Dad's sister (my aunt). I guess they are from childbirth, but being a "full-figured" woman doesn't help, either.

I was shaving my left leg on the toilet cover, before showering, and all of a sudden blood started POURING out of the front of my left ankle.
I was standing on a towel, and it looked like a slaughter! I grabbed a washcloth, and applied pressure. When I would take it off,(I was STANDING on the leg by then), it started SPURTING like a hole in a hose! I "hobbled" to my bed, leaving a trail of blood, and put my leg UP on my pillow. MY DS, (NOT the one who is a Boy Scout, LOL), ran and got his belt, and tightened it around the washcloth that was filling with blood. Everytime I loosened it, it started gushing again.

The bathroom looked like a murder had happened in there. A blood soaked towel, blood all over the side of the toilet bowl and floor. I heard DH come in, and I yelled to him that I needed help. I remembered a dear friend, who is ALSO a PLUS-SIZED lady (and has given birth to eight DK's), that occassionally has the same problem. HER DH uses sanitary pads to apply pressure, and stop the bleeding. I told DH that I had some in the back of the linen closet. (Haven't needed them for a few years).

He is so CALM in situations where someone is bleeding all over the place (his military training), but will "flip out" if the kids forget to take out the garbage! LOL!

He put the pad on the "spurt", and taped my leg all up with surgical tape. It finally stopped.
Of course, I mopped the floor, and put all the towels in to soak in OxyClean.

I wasn't scared, but I have NEVER had THAT happen before! DH says that I am an accident waiting to happen. LOL!

Anybody else ever have anything like this? I am going to TRY to shower in a little while, and hope that it has clotted by now.

My gosh woman. And I have cut myself and had a hard time getting the bleeding to stop. But if this was real bad you might want to go to the Dr and have him check your blood. Might need more iron or something. Would hate for you to hurt yourself worse and not be able to get it to stop bleeding. LOL about DS by the way...

Wow, that is really scary! I agree with Bobbie, you should go to the Dr.'s. I have never heard of anything like that before.

DH said that it's because I nicked the vein, which was just below the skin. (the vein protrudes). Then, standing on it, the gravity kept the blood in the lower part of the leg, causing it to spurt.

I WILL tell my doc, tho. I have an appointment next week, anyway.

Wow, how scary! Guess you better be careful when you shave in the future!

By Shellyg on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 11:55 pm:

I forgot to add, to get the blood off of floors or walls use hydrogen peroxide. I use to work in a vet's office and it worked WONDERS when there is a mess of blood.
I'm glad that it was not serious@

Hol, my dh has varicose veins, is this somthing to worry about? His one leg is covered in them, all lumpy and bumpy, I am going to get him an appointment with the doctor this week about it. Can they do anything about it?
It sure must have been scary for you, when you cut yourself, hope your shower turned out better, and put that razor away! lol.

If it were me, I'd certainly call the doctor's office and tell them. Maybe a blood test is needed, to check your clotting factor. It is certainly worth a phone call.

By Trina~moderator on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 07:02 am:

Yikes! Hope that doesn't happen again!

By Feona on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 07:27 am:

I would use that nair stuff from now on! Glad to hear you are better.

Go to the doctor!

By Hol on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 07:58 am:

Mrse- I don't guess that it's anything MAJOR to worry about. My Mom's had them for as long as I can remember, as has my aunt, although my aunt DID have a BAD case of vasculitis many years ago. Don't know it there's a connection.

Yes, my one leg is very lumpy and bumpy, too. It usually happens in fair skinned people. My DD's mother-in-law has them bad, and has had her veins STRIPPED. I GUESS that there is a way that they go into your groin and PULL them up, eliminating the lumps. All they are are weak spots in the vein, like a soft spot in a radiator hose.

My son-in-law doesn't have varicose veins, but he gets hemmorhoids, and thrombus', because he inherited the weak vein tendency from his Mom.

I remember my Mom wearing tight support hose, but I couldn't stand that.

I guess the only real danger, besides maybe bumping your leg, and starting a bleed, is blood clots, because the blood can pool up in the distorted vessel. It happens more to people who work on their feet, which was my case for many years.

I have a ladie's electric shaver that my DH bought me about 38 years ago! I never used it much, because it didn't shave really close, but I resurrected it this morning, and used it. It will HAVE to do.

Thanks, all, for your concern.
