Short, Medium or Long?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: Short, Medium or Long?
By Marg on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 08:35 am:

What is your hair length?

I once had really short hair, and I loved it, too bad no one else did! Right before that is was down to the middle of my back.

It is below the shoulder, and a pain right now.

I have very thin, fine hair

I like it shoulder length or a little shorter.

Dh likes me in long hair, I don't know if I can go back to that.

What's yours?

BTW, dd, age 11, has just below the shoulder hair and I am looking for new hairstyles to do on her hair. Any suggestions or websites? I do not want to cut her hair, just want ideas for it.

Thanks

Right now my hair is probably about 3 inches past my shoulders. Its longer when wet. I have a perm so the curls make it look shorter then it is. My hair is thick and wavy, so my perms always take well and last for almost 2 yrs at times.
I dont like short hair on myself. Although I havent had short hair since being a child. I wont get short hair ever.
Being overweight most of my life, I think short hair would make me look worse.

By Colette on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:06 am:

My hair is long. I used to get spirals but now it is straight and I am desperately trying to grow out these d@mn bangs. I am at the "they are driving me crazy and I want to cut them" stage.

www.klutz.com has a couple of hair books for kids.

By Bka on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:10 am:

I have had long hair all my life. It is thin, but I have alot of it if that makes sense?! I recently had it cut a bit, now it is to my bra strap, I will be growing it as long as possible. I want DD to have long hair so I have made a deal with myself that I will not cut it aside from normal trimming untill my DD hair is as long as mine...Sounds dorky I know but hey we all have quorkiness to us right????

One thing I wanted to know is what people do special to there hair? and when?

I ALWAYS have thin blonde steeks put in my hair in the spring and summer and go back to natueral color (light brown/red highlights) in fall and winter. Does anyone else out there do stuff like that just for the seasons?

By Yjja123 on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:18 am:

We both had extremely long hair but my daughter and I both had 12" cut off for "locks of love" (they make wigs for children) about 6 months ago. It is now shoulder length. Both my daughter and I have thick curly hair.
Funny thing--I had wavy hair until I was pregnant with my son and all of a sudden it got very curly on me and has stayed that way. My hair is black so I do not color/highlight it. My daughters hair is red. It gets brassy looking during the winter so we have a few highlights put in to reduce the copper penny look.
My husband hates short hair. What is it with guys and long hair anyway?

By Marg on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:33 am:

BKA, you sound exactly like me!

I always use the term bra strap to describe the length of my hair!

I promised my oldest dd I wouldn't cut my hair because she wants long hair like mine. Although I just trimmed her hair. She has thick, wavy beautiful hair, unlike mine, she takes after her dad.

I lighten my hair in the spring and summer and let it get darker in the fall and summer.

I would like to do braids or something on dd hair.

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:46 am:

Short and permed. About shirt collar length in back. I don't do long hair. My mom kept me in pixies as a kid and I never got to have braids. Now, I don't want long hair like that.

My sister 3 years younger -- had hair down to her butt! LOL! That's what I get for being the oldest! There are only 15 months between my next sister and me! So, that probably explains short hair!

Me 3/60, C. 6/61, and M. 5/63 -- I suppose 3 kids in 4 years didn't leave much time for braids, huh? By the time the youngest would have been three, we probably weren't quite as much work anymore.

By Fraggle on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 10:02 am:

I have long hair. It is very thick and naturally wavy-sometimes curly if I take the time to dry it right. I need to get it cut right now-over 6 months since I've been to the hairdresser! I'll probably get it cut to just below my shoulders with long layers to help the natural curl.

I cut my hair really short in high school-I will never do that again-I am so embarrassed looking back at the pictures. I guess I was going for the Mary Lou Retton look (you know the olympic gymnast) but it went very wrong.

Colette-stick with growing your bangs out. I decided to finally stick with it and I let mine grow out about a year ago and I love it. The first couple of months are the hardest!

By Babysitbarb on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 11:22 am:

My hair is just touching my shoulders. I have had long hair most of my life but my hair is so thick and naturally waving and I hate it. I have to keep it layered in long layers and have it thinned to be able to stand it. My senior year I had it chopped short and I'll never do that again. I went in August and asked the girl to cut it just at my shouders and to thin it out. Like I said it's just at my shoulders so it shows you she cut it much shorter then I wanted. I was letting it grow all one lenght and finally back in decmber on my birthday I had it relayed in long layers and thinned out. My hair is just to thick to have it one lenght. Oh by the way my husband likes short hair isn't that weird because most men like long.

By Kolbysmom on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 11:53 am:

My hair is a about to the middle of my back and is very thick. I also have blond highlights all year round. My bangs have been grown out since my junior year in high school.

By Melanie on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

Right now my hair is about halfway down my back. When I cut it I usually have it about shoulder length or a little shorter. But then I go through phases where I just let it grow. It grows pretty fast so I like to do that from time to time. I'll probably let it go a few more months and then cut it before summer.

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 03:35 pm:

Mine's always been long. I cut it last spring, shoulder length. I've tried off and on to let my bangs grow out, and I'm at the *trying to* stage again. Sometimes I think of letting my hair grow longer again, but then I think that some people would think that women *my* age might look ridiculous with long hair.....

By Cat on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 04:07 pm:

Mine's medium length. Bka, I know what you mean about thin hair but lots of it, because that's what I have! lol It was all one length but a few weeks ago I had some long layers cut into it. The shortest layers are at my chin and the longest are about 7-8 inches longer than that. I've always had bangs and thought about growing them out, but I dont' know how I'd look without them. That and they'd drive me crazy in the process! I have colored my hair in the past (went red!) but it's natural now and has been for about 6 years. I only colored it for about a year. It's brown with natural light brown/red highlights in it. Oh, it's also straight as a board! I had several perms growing up and a couple as an adult. I was a blond until I was about 5yo. Wouldn't know it now! :)

By Dananivyboo1 on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 05:48 pm:

I have short hair and it was shorter than it is now, but I loved it short especially during the summer months. I had to deal with less tangles, washing, solutions, etc. I think it is better for those women/men on the go. Although I miss my LONG hair. I feel more feminine I guess, or it could be that my dad has always told me women should have long hair. He was mad when I cut my hair and he always makes comments, but I like I say to him all the time., do you want to do my hair every morning???

By Tonya on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 06:40 pm:

Right now as someone said I have bra strap length hair. I usually in the spring get it cut just above my shoulders and within 6-8 weeks it is long again. I know that after he baby is born I am going to get it cut again. My problem is that if it is above my shoulders then I feel like my face looks fatter so I hate to cut it too short. And I live in a pony tail 24/7 esxcept in my sleep so if it is not long enough for that then I will have some major issues.

By Mommyathome on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:33 pm:

Mine is a couple inches above my shoulders. I don't think I will ever grow it below my shoulders again. This is as long as it's been for several years.
I've had the shorter "flip" look for quite awhile, and now it's more of a shaggy bob look.
I also use to do light blonde highlights, (I have medium blonde hair) but recently started dying my hair a light chocolate brown color. I think it looks classier on me, I like it a lot.

By Bobbie on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 09:37 pm:

My hair was about three inches above my waist last Novmeber (2002). I hadn't had a hair cut in almost 14 years at that time. I went in and got it cut. It was at my chin all one length. It is now Just below my shoulders all one length. I don't think I will be cutting it again. I am glad my bangs are the same length as the rest of my hair. But like Tonya I lived with my hair up and now I am just able to put a hair tie in and keep the hair all in it. Like I said I don't think I will be getting it cut again.

Karen, I think that long hair would suit you even in your "OLD" age. Forget what other people think. I saw a woman the other day. Had to be in her 70's she had the prettiest long silver hair. Looked like a mane.... My question is, who in the world decided that if you were old and female you had to have a helmet head (short hair cut)????

By Hol on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 10:03 pm:

Mine was just below my shoulders until a month ago. I was about 50 percent grey, and I didn't want to colour it. I also have bone-straight hair, fine, but lots of it. Both of my birth DK's got MY hair, not DH's wavy hair.

My hair was also all one length. Well, in early December, I decided to colour it. I felt like I looked like an old hag, with long, grey hair. And, yes, I had heard, too, that older women shouldn't have long hair.

I used Redken Shades EQ to colour it, because I didn't want a "regrowth" line, if I decided to stop colouring. Well, I LOVED the colour, so I decided to cut it up to my jaw, in a bob. I wore it for a day or so, like that, then I cut it in a "stack" in the back, with it short over my ears, and "sideburns". Everyone, except DH, loved it! Even my DS's.

Well, now I miss being able to wear all those pretty hair accessories, so I'll probably let it grow again. However, now DH claims to like it short! It IS a lot easier short.

By Shellyg on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 11:07 pm:

Medium long? Slightly below my bra strap, long layers, kinda of flippy (does that make sense). I have semi thick, semi wavey hair. I either work with the curl, or straighten it. As long as it does not take longer than five minutes. Oh, and last time I had my hair cut, the guy gave me "Goldie Hawn, laugh in days, shaggy bangs" his words. I really like them. I also use this product "hair pudding" Keeps the fly aways under control.

By Mommyathome on Sunday, January 11, 2004 - 11:54 pm:

Karen...first of all, you look *NO WHERE NEAR* your age!!
There is a lady that just bought a home in our area. She is about 50...maybe a bit older. Her hair is about 3 inches below her shoulders. She is seriously the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Her hair is a beautiful silvery color. (natural, not bottled) She is just beautiful. She would not be nearly as striking if her hair were short. Her and her DH just bought an older house around the corner from us. They are both doctors and are retiring soon, so they are fixing it up for retirement. The only come on weekends. But, that's beside the point :)
No one should tell anyone what they should or shouldn't look like. And, there isn't a "standard" when it comes to hair! Especially now days!

By Eve on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 08:27 am:

Mine is short to medium. It's above my shoulders. (It depends on what medium is to you. :)) I like my hair on the short side. I like to change hairstyles, or feel like it's changing. I hate to wear it the same day after day. I have had my hair long, and I end up just wearing it up in a clip. Which drives me nuts. I could seriously post a gallery of all the styles I have had over the years. LOL!

By Mommyathome on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 11:15 am:

Eve, I did the same thing when my hair was long. I just pulled it into a ponytail, twisted it and flipped it up and clipped it into place. I purposely keep my hair too short for a ponytail. Otherwise, that's all I would ever have LOL. I guess it's been about 4 years since my hair has been below my shoulders.

By Eve on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 01:45 pm:

Robin, you are speaking my language! LOL! That's exactly how I was! No ponytails the past few years here either! :)

By Marg on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 01:49 pm:

Ok, I am the same way Eve and Robin! I used to tell my mom that women should be like the barbie heads that you can pull the hair in and out to make it as long or short as you want!

I really like Joy Behar's hairstyle. But I can not find any good pictures of her to take to my beautician. Anyone know of any good pics of her anywhere. She is the outspoken lady of the view!

I would like the hair a little shorter or cut out around the ears, love to wear ear rings.

By Bellajoe on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 02:06 pm:

Mine was around shoulder length and all one length up till last July. It had been that way for years so i held my breath, went to the salon and had her chop it! It is now short ( so short i can't put it in a pony tail) and layered. Probably as short as Joy Behar's hair that Marg talked about above. I like it, it finally has some style to it! It's very easy to do and takes very little time to fuss with it in the morning. I think my dh wants me to grow it long again...but too bad! he doesn't have to take care of it LOL!

By Bellajoe on Monday, January 12, 2004 - 02:10 pm:

Marg,

Just go to google and type in "Joy Behar or The View" and there are lots of pics of Joy. She has had several different haristyles to choose from LOL!
