How do you clean your iron?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: How do you clean your iron?

My iron has some gunk on the iron part of it. I went to iron some khaki pants this morning, and I thought there is no way I can put that iron on my pants LOL.
It's just kind of a brown/burnt looking smudge. It won't scrape off...it's almost like just a brown stain.
I was thinking maybe alcohol and a cotton ball? But I haven't tried it yet.

What's an iron? I throw my stuff back into the dryer right before I wear it if need be. I never buy anythign that has to be dry clean only or I would be in trouble.

Let me know what you find out!!! I have the same yuccky stuff on my iron and it won't come off on anything except the clothes I am ironing LOL!!! I even tried an SOS pad but no luck. I've been turning stuff inside out to iron cause I kept getting the junk on our clothes.

Get a brown paper bag and pour salt all over it. Plug in the iron and let it get hot..then just keep running the iron over the bag with salt on it. It works for me, hope it works for you!

Aww..thanks for the birthday wish! I can't believe he's that old already!! If we were closer, he and Kolby could be friends LOL

I'm going to try the salt thing. I tried the alcohol and id didn't work AT ALL.
I never thought of turning the clothes inside out. Duh! That's a good idea. I'll let you know if something works :)

Hello,

I get some bottled water and some salt mix it together then fill my iron about 1/2 full, turn it on steam and iron an old rag or towel then all that gunk comes out.
That gunk is hard mineral deposits from your water I was told.
Also I always have an old towel or rag with me when I iron
and I iron on that before I iron the garment just to be sure
So I don`t ruin something.
Also I have to add,
I started buying (linen water)it`s called.
It comes in different scents
and I have found since I have started using that
The build up does not happen to my iron.

Thanks :) I still haven't tried any of these things. I will be ironing on Monday though, so I will try them then.

Sue, we just started using linen water just a few months back. I love it!!

I just looked at the information regarding cleaning of a stained iron. I'm about ready to throw this one in the garbage and buying another. Nothing is working. But I have another question. The stain that was on the iron is now also on my husband's new shirt. Any suggestions as to how to get the stain off of the shirt?
Thanks
