Sonja, my 21 year old foster daughter, had hip surgey on Monday. Yesterday she was in quite a bit of pain, and on morphine. She seemed to be tolerating her tube feedings ok, so they removed her IV. She wasn't urinating, so they put in a catheter. When I talked to her mom last night, she said she was in and out of sleep, which was to be expected. Her colour was not good.
Her mom called this morning. She quit breathing around midnight. They think she had a seizure and aspirated. They think it could be from the morphine. I told mom they shouldn't be giving her such thin fluids, and especially when she's only at a 45* angle. She told them, but they are doing it anyway. She always refluxes with water, and it could just be 10cc. They're giving her 60cc before and after every feed. Her feeds are only resource, which is also thin.
Her hemoglobin was very low, so they're transfusing her right now. She's also on oxygen. Just waiting for a doc to order some antibiotics. This is very hard to hear....

I posted some of this under a post Karen wrote to me, but figured people might not read something under someone else's name. Please keep Sonja in your prayers.

I just spoke with her dad, and things are looking up. She's got some colour back, and is playing with some of her toys. She's still on oxygen, and is on antibiotics. He hasn't started her on the food I sent, because he wants to talk to the nutritionist. I reminded him that she was trained to work with the general public, and that we know S best. It took me years to get her to this point, with her feedings and health, and I don't want her screwed up in a week. He laughed and said he'd give her my message. I told him she could call me. I doubt she will. I'll just have to whip the young lady back in to shape next week!!!!
So, for now things are looking much better. Thanks for all of your concern and your prayers.

Well, today's news isn't as good as yesterday. She had another code blue last night. She's back on 100% oxygen, and is being suctioned all the time. She coughed and quit breathing. I didn't even ask him about her feedings.
Mom and dad are both there. I can't get there tomorrow, but might be able to on Sun. I can almost certainly do Monday.
Man, this really SUCKS!

Tonite's update is she's only going to have IV fluids and meds for a few days - no feedings. She's going to be so weak and hungry. :o(
