What's your least favorite household chore?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion: Archive January 2004: What's your least favorite household chore?
By Mommyathome on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 11:59 am:

Hands down.....laundry! It is never done. Even if I do every load, there is always a few mismatched socks sitting on the dryer, or a handwash only sweater in the hamper...then there's the clothes that we are actually wearing. By the end of the day, there will be 5 complete outfits in the laundry again.
If I could hire a maid for one chore, it would be the laundry!

By Trina~moderator on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:03 pm:

Actually, I don't mind doing laundry at all. Maybe I'm weird! LOL! My most dreaded chores are cleaning our 3 bathrooms and washing the kitchen floor. Yuck!

By Mommyathome on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:06 pm:

It's not the actual act of doing laundry that I hate, it's just that I don't get that *gratifying* feeling of it being done. After I clean the kitchen or the bathroom, they look so shiny and sparkley and it just feels good. But, the laundry just doesn't do that for me LOL

By Kittycat_26 on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:07 pm:

I'm with Trina.......it has got to be bathrooms. I even went so far as to make a deal with my DH. If he does the bathrooms and the kitchen floor then he doesn't have to help with any of the other cleaning.

By Missy3 on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:09 pm:

What I hate it straightening, my DH is really good at it though. I guess I never was taught to put things away. I love to clean though, when I know I can do it *right*!! I LOVE to do my floors, I have a steam mop and a Hoover Floor Mate. I do hire out weekly $60.00. IT is so worth it to me right nw with a baby!

By Tonya on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:14 pm:

Bathroom and floors without a doubt. I don't mind anything else but I have bathrooms.

Laundry I ahve no issues with but folding it is a different story. We live out of baskets most of the time until I get a bug up my butt and I will sit for 60-90 minutes and fold everything and put it all away. I am with Robin I just don't get the satisfaction from it thought cause by day end there are 3 sets of cloths ready again.

By Momoffour on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:18 pm:

I hate all of it LOL. my worst is dishes and laundry

By Eve on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:21 pm:

Bathrooms and floors here too. :) I don't mind laundry (Although, sometimes it really piles up and then I hate it.) and I love to vacuume and straighten up. I also hate unloading the dishwasher lately.

Trina, I am actually dreading when all of our bathrooms are finished. Having just one for a while to clean was much better. Yours are bigger too! So, I do feel for you there. ;)

If we jump on the baby wagon again, I'll hire someone to come and do the major cleaning.

By Tunnia on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:26 pm:

My most hated chore is scrubbing the tub in the master bathroom. Because of it's size I have to actually climb in to scrub it and it has this horrible grid-patterned textured floor that just collects grime. My dh is a mechanic so the tub gets nasty quickly and takes a lot of elbow grease to get clean. I work up such a sweat cleaning that darn tub that I have to shower after I'm done. My Mom saved me though because for Christmas she gave me a Scumbuster. I still had to climb in when I cleaned the tub last week, but it only took half the time and effort to get the job done. Hurray for Mom!!!:)

By Pamt on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:27 pm:

I actually enjoy cleaning bathrooms because they get so obviously dirty (esp. with 3 guys in the house) so I feel very good when they are cleaned again. As for laundry, I have 2 days set aside for laundry---Friday for clothes and Monday for linens. I do it all in one day from washing, folding, and putting away and then it's DONE; at least 'til next week. The chores I hate most are ironing and unloading the dishwasher. I don't know why it is such a pain to unload the dishwasher--I timed it and it only takes 3 minutes--but I just hate to do it!

By Trina~moderator on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:40 pm:

I get satisfaction from clean laundry. It's also nice having a lot of clothes to choose from. It doesn't take much effort to do. :) My floors and bathrooms don't stay clean for long so I get frustrated because they involve a lot of work and elbow grease.

Tunnia, I hear ya on the big tub! We have a jacuzzi tub in our master bathroom, and although I LOVE it, it is a PITB to clean. I've had my Scumbuster for a couple years now and couldn't do without it! It's super for cleaning shower walls, too. I got one for Eve for Christmas. LOL!

By Christylee on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:44 pm:

My least favorite chore would be vaccumming and then unloading the dishwasher. I have always hated vaccumming for some reason. As for the dishwasher, I don't know why I don't like it but I hate it!

Christy - who thought she'd just jump right in

By Colette on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 12:55 pm:

IRONING!!!

By Mommyathome on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 01:19 pm:

I love to vacuum! Nothing beats the look of a freshly vacuumed carpet :)

At our old house, I *hated* cleaning the bathrooms. They were quite small and fairly old as well. It was just an icky job for me. Since moving to this new house, the bathrooms are so white and so nice that I love to clean them and see that sparkle.

Colette...I hate ironing too!!

By Kay on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 01:47 pm:

Hands down....BATHROOMS...YUK!

By Missy3 on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 02:51 pm:

Ironing, what do you have to iron??? Anything I have to iron gets sent to the dry cleaners.

I also love laundry because I got the new front loader washer and dryer last Christmas and everything comes out so nice, it makes me want to fold the clothes immediately.

IMO if I do a load of laundry right when I get up before kiddies go to school and dry it when I get back from the bus stop and fold it when I get out of the shower. Then I do a load before lunch throw in dryer during lunch and fold after the kids are down for a nap. The clothes are all done all the time, well most of the time!

Has anyone purchased those new toilet scrubbers that are disposable? I always thought it was pretty gross to have a toilet brush out all the time collecting dust and emmiting god knows what kind of mold in the air.

By Trisa on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 02:58 pm:

Laundry and dishes for me. Hate doing laundry but love the smell of those fresh sheets!!

By Mommyof4 on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 03:36 pm:

I can honestly say that I do not enjoy housecleaning of any type.

By Kaye on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 04:00 pm:

Well I have to agree with mommyof4...I don't like any of it. However to me hands down...dealing with the paperwork. I just don't have a system going and paper piles win out here! If I could do all my bills electronically with no paperwork and not get any junk mail AND convince the schools to quit sending home 700 pages of crap I would be set!

By Bellajoe on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 04:07 pm:

definitely cleaning the bathrooms...specifically the showers and tubs! Blech!

By Dananivyboo1 on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 04:16 pm:

For those of you not liking on cleaning the bathrooms, I would be glad to do them for you. I do not mind cleaning bathroom at all. I clean our bathroom at least every other day or more. I guess I just like to keep it sanitary and when we were younger we used to always have unexpected company so the bathroom was always clean. My least favorite would have to be laundry only cause we do not have washer/dryer in our house. And its either lugging all the way downstairs or to my mothers house.

By Mrsclark on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 04:22 pm:

I don't really mind bathrooms, they are nice when clean. Also laundry, once I get to it, is okay. I HATE my closet and drawers! At work my space was always clean, but at home...never. My husband's is always in order. His drawers are because I put his stuff away and he told me how when we married! :) My closet is just gross! Clothes two feet thick on the floor I think! Clean, of course, but still. My desk - yuck! Too much paperwork and post-its and stuff. I get it in order and swear it will stay that way and then one night the messy fairy comes in and messes it up! I will catch him one night, I promise! :)

By Karen~moderator on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 05:24 pm:

Does cooking count? ROFL

Seriously, it's bathtubs, particularly the shower walls, and mopping floors.

I am obsessed with laundry - even though I work full time, not a day goes by that I don't do laundry. I think that comes from my mom not getting our clothes washed when I was a child, and I started doing my own around age 9, and that was when EVERYthing had to be ironed. I love to have all the clothes clean, washed, and put neatly away EVERY day.

It hurts physically to do the bathtubs and mop the floors, plus I find mopping floors SUCH a pain in the butt, no pun intended.

By Cat on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 06:00 pm:

I don't mind doing laundry. Folding it, on the other hand... :)

I don't know that I have a least favorite chore. I like/dislike them all about the same. Well, I guess maybe cleaning out the litter box. :)

By Marcia on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 07:34 pm:

Dusting. YUK!!!
I'd say ironing, but I don't do that. LOL
I also hate unloading the dishwasher. No idea why.
I don't mind laundry, but I certainly NEVER get it done!!!
I pretty much cleaning all together. I have way better things to be doing!!

By My2girlygirls on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 07:47 pm:

Hands down. Unloading the dishwasher. My DH does it! I think it's an instant gratification thing. When you vacuum you can see it, when you dust you can see it. Who the H*** can see that you emptied the dishwasher? Nobody. Nobody opens the cabinets and says "Wow, you did a great job with those dishes" Stupid, I know, but hey, I'm entitled to my quirks. Right?

By Sue3 on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 07:53 pm:

I don`t like any of it !
Ironing isn`t so bad though, and they have wonderful scented linen water that you fill
your steam iron with , it makes your clothes smell so good!

By Mrse on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 07:53 pm:

I don't mind the chores, any of them, it is just the amount of chores. I find my self, doing everything, and only get help if I whine. I get off work at 2, and many days, I am on my feet cleaning untill I go to bed. Which is why I was venting on another thread. I have decided, that all three of my dd's are going to pick a day, and that is the day they do their laundry, that way they will not be so quick to throw just anything into the laundry. eg: dd is cleaning up her room, perfectly clean jeans thrown in the basket, I said theses are not dirty, she said yah I know, I just don't want them anymore!ahhhhhhhhhh kids

By Fraggle on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 07:56 pm:

Dusting is my least favorite, too. It never ever gets done around here. I don't really mind doing any of the other jobs, it is just that once I pick up the girls' stuff in one room they have made a mess in the next-so I'm never done. I actually cleaned a woman's house when I was at grad-school in RI. They had this amazing house right on the ocean. I think we would hire someone to come clean in a second, but the idea of someone in my house that I don't really know kind of creeps me out (Weird, I know:)).

By Joy~bundles on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 08:54 pm:

I HATE scrubbing the floors!!! Blah!!!

By Babysitbarb on Monday, January 5, 2004 - 09:59 pm:

I hate cleaning! it doesn't matter what Im cleaning I just hate it. Maybe it's because Im such a neat freak. Laundry really doesn't bother me at all either. I do laundry on Mondays, wednesdays and fridays. My SIL just freaks when I make a comment of what day I do laundry and that I only do whites on mondays and fridays. The family teases me about being so organized.

By Bea on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 01:20 am:

I hate vacuuming. We have mostly hardwood floors with Oriental carpets. They all have fringe which needs to be cleaned, but it gets sucked into the vacuum and shuts it down....or the rugs slide around as I try to clean them.

By Hol on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 03:15 am:

Vaccuuming!

I also have trouble keeping the FOLDING caught up. And, paper piles! I put my junk mail aside and never get to it, then it's a mountain!

By Blueridgemom on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 08:42 am:

I hate cooking! LOL planning meals and cooking sucks. I would live on sandwiches and cereal if it was up to me. But obviously that is no good. I don't mind dishes and laundry too much unless it gets too piled up for some reason. I usually do 2 loads of laundry a day.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 09:00 am:

Christy, we must be soulmates! LOL I hate cooking with a passion. The fact that I'm an awful cook doesn't help. I honestly consider that a *chore*!

By Angellew on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 09:31 am:

I HATE ironing (which is probably why I am soooo careful about doing laundry and taking things out of the dryer immediately, so I don't really have to too much!), and I hate washing floors! I don't know what it is?

By Carolk on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 11:21 am:

I HATE cleaning the bathrooms. YUCK!! I have no problem cleaning anything else. Most of the time I'll get my husband to clean the bathroom for me.

By Blueridgemom on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 01:10 pm:

Karen, it is true that I hate the daily cooking chore...but I will say that if I had time and only had to cook one or two meals a week, I would love it and would make some fantastic gourmet meals! But the thing I hate is that I don't have the time to spend on doing it "right" so I have to do quickie meals, which I am not good at. I keep on getting stuck in ruts of the same 6 or 7 meals over and over again. However, if I was alone and had some time, I would love to sip a glass of wine while making a really yummy feast.

By Insaneusmcwife on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 02:39 pm:

laundry and dishes don't bother me. I just don't like putting them away. Windows and toilets on the other hand only get done when I absolutly have to. Those are chores I give to my dh. I only do them if he isn't home and it really needs to be done. As for ironing, if the wrinkles won't come out in the dryer and dh isn't home to iron it, it dosn't get worn, lol!

By Kate on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 03:17 pm:

Cooking is the WORST. I am CLUELESS. I really hate it.

Now, will I get kicked off the board if I admit my husband does 90% of the laundry???

By Missymelissy on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 03:22 pm:

I have to say cleaning the toilets, inside and out. I am very lucky DH does most (the majority) of the house cleaning, he's a neat freak - very picky on how the house is clean.

I don't mind the laundry - since we've moved into our house, I LOVE doing laundry!! (Never thought I'd ever say that), I don't like putting it away though.

By Babysitbarb on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 - 10:10 pm:

I have to agree with most of you that I hate cooking anymore also. If it was left up to my husband to cook it would be scrambled eggs every night. YUK!

By Pamt on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 - 12:15 am:

Missy, you said, "Ironing, what do you have to iron??? Anything I have to iron gets sent to the dry cleaners."

Well, Dh wears chino-type pants to work every day with a cotton button-down type of shirt, plus a dress shirt and suit on Sundays, and maybe an extra pair of cotton pants/shirt depending on our weekend activities. Both of my boys both wear khakis and a button-down (cotton) to church and then whatever I wear duing the week to church and various activities. The 2.5 days a week I work I wear scrubs, so that's low-maintenance. Anyway, we are looking at between 15-20 items that need ironing a week. Frankly, I don't have the money to spend for all of that to be dry-cleaned not to mention the time it would take running back and forth to the cleaners...so that's why I HAVE to iron and HATE it.
